Rare Borneo leopard identified as new species

A rare and reclusive leopard that hunts among the dense island forests of Borneo and Sumatra in south-east Asia has been identified as an entirely new species of great cat.

Genetic tests and pelt examinations have revealed that the animal, now called the Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi), is as distinct from other clouded leopards that roam mainland Asia as lions are from panthers.

One killed by wild elephants

A villager has been killed after some elephants ran amuck in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS) in Suoh last Wednesday.

"It is true the incident took place in the TNBBS forest in Suoh," the head of the TNBBS service, Lusman Pasaribu, said here on Monday.

He said his office had used a Global Positioning System (GPS) to check the site of the incident where six elephants had run amuck causing the death of villager Maryono.

Indonesian Night Staged in China

A 200-member Indonesian cultural mission have arrived in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province, where they are scheduled to stage traditional performances on Wednesday night.

The mission comprises singers, dancers and musicians from across Indonesia. They staged the two-hour performances, known as Indonesian Night, in Beijing on Monday.

Bandung or bust

Last weekend, I opted to break out of town and head to Bandung for a major eating and drinking session.

A number of years ago I used to live in what was once known as the "Paris of Java", but hadn't returned for simply ages, so when an Indonesian friend invited me to accompany him and his family in their Mobil Rakyat (car of the masses), I jumped at the chance.
