The key differences between lean and Kaizen are very interesting to me. While Kaizen focuses on continuous improvement and the strategies that accompany that focus area – lean’s principles have to do with reducing waste, as well as cutting costs and reducing waste throughout the production process. Lean also addresses quality issues including defects, delays and overproduction. I think lean is a very important concept because like Kaizen, it focuses on constant improvement but is results driven. Since learning more about how these two concepts mirror each other, it becomes clear that the philosophy of Kaizen aids lean with the necessary principals to ultimately improve quality and reduce waste. After reading this article, I now better understand how one concept may be unsuccessful without the other. This article has identified the importance of using both concepts interchangeably.

Thank you for the great explanation. “Kaizen” is the Japanese word meaning “continuous improvement” and it is the underpinning of the Kanban board. Without the Kanban method’s we use and the combination of the software provided by Atlasian, Jira, git, git flow, and Jenkins or workflow with multiple subcontractors and projects merging into one large web application would not be possible. Without Kanban or Kaizen our workflows and processes would not be where they are today. Great post!

I enjoyed reading your post about comparing kaizen to lean. Especially how continuous improvement and learning are the basis for both of them. A focus on continuous improvement is an investment in existing staff, and with staffing shortages so prevalent these days, it is important to build that sort of resiliency.

This article really helps the reader understand the relationship between lean principles and the Kaizen philosophy. Lean, in its own right, is the whittling down of unnecessary steps in processes to further improve the production line. Bringing awareness of Kaizen into workspaces to employees makes them more aware of the potential obstructions in the production processes and, as stated in the article, empowers the employees to make these changes themselves.

One aspect that is often forgotten when implementing lean is the importance of involving and engaging employees in the process. Lean management is not just about implementing new tools and techniques, but also about changing the culture and mindset of the organization. In order to be successful, employees must be trained and empowered to identify and eliminate waste, and continuously improve processes. Without their participation and buy-in, it can be difficult to achieve lasting results. Another aspect that’s commonly forgotten is the importance of continuous improvement and not just implementing it as a one-time project. Lean is a journey and should be continuously improved as the organization and its environment changes.

I work in a machine shop and my role has been essentially how you would describe a water spider. It wasnt until today did I learn that they’re making it an official role in our manufacturing so I’ll be essentially be doing the same work but I’ll be getting a pay bump.

My biggest takeaway from this article is how when creating your companies KPIs, you must be aware of the different mindsets that exist in your company. Employees can be focusing on profits, customer service, quality, or simply just clocking in to get their work done (in my opinion, this can be one of the hardest mindsets to switch!). KPIs need to be accurate to the process they intend to highlight. All levels of the company should be involved in the development of KPIs for the best results. There is a lot of truth in the statement “if you can’t measure, you can’t manage.” Managers should actively by trying to determine the best KPIs for their departments and not forget that vital information comes from the Genba (actual place) alone.
