Husmannsplasser are cotter's farms in the pre-industrialist Norwegian farming system. The cotter (husmann) was allotted a small piece of land from the farmer in exchange for duties on the farm. The system was at its height early in the 19th century and was abandoned by 1900, but many husmannsplasser still exist.
