Healthy Me - Your Healthcare Companion

Access to healthcare is an issue for millions of Americans, with obstacles such as cost, distance and COVID-19 barring many from regularly seeing their physicians. While this issue will require an overhaul of the healthcare system to remedy, there are people now who need care. Our app seeks to promote a healthier lifestyle for its users, providing preventative care in a regular and consistent fashion, especially for those who cannot afford to see their primary care physician often.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

In the US, billions of dollars are spent every year on preventable diseases, with emotional, physical and mental costs weighing on us all in a difficult to measure, but very real way. Lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy and exercising, can have profound impacts on one's health and quality of life, so we have set out to provide a set of tools for our users to succeed in caring for their health.

Framework

This app operates using a Node.JS backend, with Express as the backend server techology, and Vue as the frontend framework.

Challenges

Much of the challenges were in aggregating the data and presenting it in a interactive and pleasing manner. We want to provide easy to use information and avoid creating any barriers for users to exercise and stretch daily.

Accomplishments

We created an app that allows the user to click on a map of the human body to target whichever muscles they want to focus on. The app comes with a stretch timer, as well as a food tracker as well.

What We Learned

While many health apps on the market provide plenty of tracking tools, not as many of them actively suggest healthy living tips or suggest certain stretches or exercises. Samsung Health does remind the user to walk and stretch from time to time, but these apps are generally more for tracking statistics. Without already having the knowledge and information on how to plan a healthy lifestyle, these statistics are not as useful. Gamifying health has a lot of potential, but it is important to teach the users the rules of the game as well.

Future Work

We hope to incorporate more exercises, stretches and healthy living tips. We also want to expand the functionality of the tracker and stretch timer, which is currently only stores data in the session. What other health apps do well is collecting and aggregating that data; we hope to catch up in that respect, and combine those statistics with medical and health science to best improve the quality of life and health of our users. These statistics can be used in turn to suggest better, more personalized care; an example could be tracking food and nutrition, and coordinating diet and exercise together to prevent the onset of certain diseases that seem likely to affect the user, or recommending exercise regimens that take into consideration recent workouts to avoid overworking certain muscle groups.
