POP: Protect Our Penguins

A website designed to educate about penguins, the threats they face, as well as how you can help.

Inspiration

Penguins are among those species being affected by climate change. Education is a vital aspect of stopping this. We wanted to create a site that would allow users to learn about penguins as well as donate towards organizations aimed at helping them.

What it does

Educate users about penguins to foster a greater appreciation for the species as well as a better understanding of factors threatening their survival. Users can read facts about penguins and the threats to them, take a quiz about this information, and donate to different causes.

How we built it

The site was built with HTML and CSS, and used JS to create the quiz. We started with building the overall structure for the site, then added content, and then added finishing touches like animation, styling, and the quiz.

Challenges we ran into

Layout of the information in a legible and accessible format was challenging at times. We wanted to create a minigame as well but could not figure out how to connect the Java to the HTML.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Since the main goal of the site is to draw people in and garner interest in the issue, we feel that we successfully created an appealing website both functionally and stylistically. The quiz is also an important feature since it allows users to interact with the site/get more involved.

What we learned

Gained a better understanding of HTML, CSS, and especially JS.

What's next for Threats to Penguins

The next steps would be implementing the minigame and the interaction after pressing the "Donate" button (learning about organizations and choosing one to donate to). We would also like to add more images and further develop the threats page.
