This review outlines the contribution of tissue-resident macrophages in the basal homeostatic state and the inflammatory response. Macrophage representation is significant and similar (~5-15%) across nearly every tissue and remarkably well conserved across vertebrate species. The temporal stability and aggressive re-establishment of macrophage-parenchyma relationships suggest that active mechanisms exist to maintain this interaction within specific parameters.
