.nl domain information

.nl is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Netherlands, managed by SIDN (Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland). Launched in 1986, it was one of the first country-code extensions in the world and remains one of the most successful, with over 6 million registered domains. Reverting the common myths, you don't need to be a Dutch citizen to register a .nl domain—any business or individual within the EU (or worldwide with proper administrative contacts) can secure their presence in this high-performing digital market.

Register .nl domain without restrictions

.nl domains are available without restrictions regarding their names, also for foreign entities.

Why should I buy .nl domain?

With over 750,000 new registrations every year, .nl is the most widely used domain extension in the Netherlands — and particularly popular among businesses. Here's why it's worth considering for yours.

Most trusted domain for the Dutch

When Dutch internet users see a .nl domain, the associations are immediate: local, trusted, reliable. Research by the Dutch registry shows that words like "close", "trusted", "reliable", and "secure" are consistently linked to the .nl extension — chosen by 65–74% of respondents. A .com, by contrast, reads as international and commercial. For a business targeting Dutch customers, that difference matters.

Dutch shoppers choose .nl — and the numbers back it up

Dutch online shoppers have a clear preference: given a choice between two similar webshops with different domain extensions, 82% will pick the .nl option — and that preference gets stronger as the purchase value increases. For a business selling in the Netherlands, that's a direct commercial argument for registering a .nl domain. More trust in the extension translates into more completed purchases.

Transfering a .nl domain

Transferring this domain takes up to 5 days and includes one year of renewal in the transfer fee. The transfer is completed unless it is rejected by your current registrar. Once the transfer is done, your domain expiration date is reset from the transfer date — the same way it works for a brand new registration.

What happens if a .nl domain expires

The restore fee applies from 8 days before the expiration date. If your domain expires without being renewed, you have 14 days to reactivate it. After that window closes, the domain can no longer be recovered.
