This week on The Backdrop at @SecondWindGroup, we take a look at #Supergirl. What the movie’s “True Grit” meets “Mad Max” framing tells us about the state of the universe, the state of the genre, the state of the industry and more. WATCH: youtu.be/dwIZoym8rWw?si…

It's insane (and great) that Best Supporting Actor could legitimately come down to this.

I believe it was Ethan Hawke who said that Washington effectively told him, “You don’t want to be the person who is validated by receiving an award, you want to be the guy who validates the award by receiving it.”

Denzel Washington says he doesn’t do movies for Oscars & doesn’t care about them. “Man gives the award. God gives the reward… On my last day, Oscars aren’t going to do me a bit of good” (Source: @JakesTakes)

The important thing to remember is that Warners put “Barbie” on the same weekend as “Oppenheimer” in the hopes that it would crush Nolan’s film at the box office, to “punish” Nolan for daring to leave them. Warners built “Barbie” as a spite house, like a jilted lover.

Imagine if a bunch of kids in a classroom ceased existing. Imagine it happened several times a week. Imagine it happened like this for decades. And nobody did anything to stop it, but left those communities to deal with the fallout. Thank goodness this is an alternate reality!

I love how horror movies have to take place in an alternate universe where media doesn't exist. Like if 17 children magically vanished from a small town that wouldn't have the *town* in an uproar, Fox News would be doing 24/7 coverage, the streets would be choked with podcasters.

Honestly, thrilled to see a showrunner standing up for a cast member targetted by harassment.

There is be a thesis to be written on the autocannibalism of pop culture. The evolution of pop culture from “new things based on old things” (“Star Wars”) to “new takes on old things” (Tim Burton’s “Batman”) to “new versions of old things that look just like the old things.”

The best DC stuff - the truly iconic stuff, from “Watchmen” to “Dark Knight Returns” to “All-Star Superman” - handily clears the best Marvel stuff because it realises that continuity is far less important than actually telling a good, proper story.

It will always be so funny that one of the things that tanked the MCU was the decision to retcon a billion-dollar movie to make “comics accurate” Bush-era Islamophobic propaganda.

Ignoring the individual quality of those shows, the fact that HBO has largely been repurposed into an IP factory (“The Penguin”, “Dune: Prophecy”, “House of the Dragon”, “True Detective: Night Country”) while Apple has to build its own shows is a huge part of this.

The direct market killed mainstream American superhero comics, both economically and culturally. When they stopped being things that kids could - and would want - to pick up with their pocket money at the corner store, they were doomed.

It’s insane that this was the opening of a family-friendly Disney franchise film that grossed nearly a billion dollars. Good for Gore Verbinski.

Just on this, before “Psycho” it was fairly common for people to just “show up” to movies. You’d arrive halfway through a film, watch the second half and then stay for the first half of the next showing. “Psycho” really codified “be in your seat by start time.”
