Drought + recent hot and dry weather + a winter with little snow has created conditions ripe for the large wildfires burning in CO/UT. Impacts have been devastating. Three firefighter deaths in CO, destroyed property, and unhealthy levels of smoke. drought.gov @NOAA
A U.S. Drought Monitor map for the Four Corners region, valid June 30, 2026, reveals widespread severe to extreme conditions in Colorado and Utah, highlighted by a concentrated area of D4 exceptional drought centered over north central Colorado.
A NOAA Hazard Mapping System map from July 2, 2026, details high-intensity wildfire points in southern Utah and Colorado emitting expansive smoke plumes across the Intermountain West. Heavy smoke concentrations, shown in brownish-orange, drift northeastward over Denver, Colorado, and into Wyoming and Nebraska, while a broader area of Light and Medium smoke blankets the surrounding region.
