Started reviewing PhD applications this year, and while I expected it, I am still blown away by the students' achievements before starting their PhDs. The 2015 version of me wouldn't have even made it past the first round.

It is just so sad that the #NeurIPS2024 main conference ended with such a racist remark by a faculty when talking about ethics. How ironic! I also want to commend the Chinese student who spoke up right on spot. She was respectful, decent, and courageous. Her response was

GPT-4 and Gemini are systems and products, not models. There must be lots of engineering tricks and hard-coded rules, and we would never know how many models are inside the systems before open-sourcing. Requesting comparison with them is unfair in scientific research.

Many people may not know that Meta FAIR (Facebook AI Research) and Google DeepMind were the most prestigious industry research labs before OpenAI dropped ChatGPT. OpenAI was also very good, but not as good as the other two.

The famous "Chihuahua or Muffin" problem in computer vision is considered solved by GPT-4V on social media. But really? The answer is NO. GPT-4V cannot reason well about the same images in the original "Chihuahua or Muffin" grid when they are in a different layout. I
