Day 2 of btcplusplus Nairobi 🇰🇪 kept the momentum going with a mix of technical deep dives, design conversations, and discussions about the future of bitcoin adoption. The day explored how bitcoin can become more accessible and usable across different contexts, from Lightning⚡ as bitcoin's translation layer and cross-platform wallet development, to open bitcoin mining and building better on and off-ramp experiences. There were also conversations around product design, the role of African designers in shaping bitcoin's future, and how more women across the continent are contributing to and reimagining Bitcoin innovation. We're especially proud of our grantees who took the stage, including John Osezele, who shared insights on building cross-platform bitcoin wallets with Flutter and BDK-Dart, and Tobechi Chukwuleta, who spoke about extending BTCPay Server through plugins while maintaining the integrity of the core project. Meanwhile, hackers continued building throughout the day, refining their projects, collaborating with mentors, and turning ideas into working solutions ahead of the Hackathon Expo.

Still buzzing from btcplusplus Nairobi 🇰🇪, the first-ever conference in Africa, and the first open-source edition. Day one was packed with incredible sessions that explored what it really means to build, contribute to, and sustain open-source software. From practical advice on getting started in Bitcoin open source and becoming a better code reviewer, to discussions on making software more hackable and user-modifiable, there was something for everyone, regardless of where they are in their journey. We also dove into the technical side of Bitcoin and Lightning, exploring topics like improving Lightning infrastructure security, enhancing privacy in Taproot transactions, modern testing and fuzzing techniques in Bitcoin Core, and implementing features such as Replace-By-Fee in Lightning applications. AI was another major theme throughout the day, with speakers examining both the opportunities and trade-offs of using AI in open-source development. Conversations ranged from how AI can support contributors to the cognitive costs that come with relying too heavily on these tools, and what that means for the future of open source. There were also important discussions around building technology for African realities, closing the gap between contributor and founder, improving payment experiences across the continent, and exploring emerging technologies like Nostr and secure enclaves. Proud to see several Btrust grantees and team members take the stage, including Sulaiman Aminu Barkindo, Abiodun Awoyemi, Kelvin Isievwore, Abdullahi Yunus, Frankline Omondi, and 👩💻 Rita Anene, sharing their work and contributing to these important conversations. And that was just day one. Stay tuned for updates from the following days.

The team included Anne Adhiambo , Lucy Kamau, Data Strategy and Analytics, Shannon Kioko, and Salma Adam. 🛠️ Core-Gate won the Btrust Open Source Contribution Spam Award for its work improving pathways into Bitcoin Core contributions. The team included Aisha Omar and Mary Gathoni. 📱 LNPesa won Best Tool for Mobile Brokers/Agents Using Bitcoin, sponsored by Minmo, for bringing Bitcoin-powered cash exchange capabilities to feature phones. The team included Dorcas Kendi and kelly gakii . 🔒 SiriScore was recognized for its innovative approach to Bitcoin privacy tooling. Two weeks ago, we concluded Hack4Freedom Lagos—and I'm still riding the wave of what we achieved together. As the Director of the Global Hack4Freedom Hackathon, bringing this to Lagos was never just about running an event. It was the culmination of months of planning, careful selection, deep collaboration, and an unwavering commitment from an extraordinary team of mentors, and speakers who gave their time and expertise selflessly. My deepest gratitude goes to Brianna Honkawa d'Estries, founder of Hack4Freedom and EVENTO, for entrusting me with the vision and leadership of this incredible initiative. Your belief in me made this possible. To every speaker, mentor, and judge—you showed up, you shared, and you poured into these women. Thank you for being the village that raised this dream. To our sponsors Btrust, Breez, and Soapbox and all our community partners—thank you for believing in our vision and helping us make history. Your support transforms potential into impact. This experience reaffirmed a simple but profound truth: leadership is not about titles. It is about service, impact, and the ability to bring people together to achieve something far greater than ourselves. The future of freedom tech is diverse, determined, and here. 🧡 Read the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/erTxNx9d #hack4freedom

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Freedom Tech Summit, BTCPay Server Day, and BTC Prague in Czechia 🇨🇿. Looking back at the photos, I think it’s the most I’ve smiled at any conference, partly relief (cries in African passport) and partly the experience itself. As an African, going to such a conference isn't usually something you decide on a whim. You have to think about the visa process, document collection, waiting, and then hoping immigration doesn’t become a second interview despite already having a visa. Thankfully, the Czech visa process was smooth, and immigration was refreshingly easy. It was also the first time I didn’t get held up for long checks at a European border.😅 This made me even more grateful to the Btrust team for creating opportunities like these. The team really invests in growth, either through mentorship, connections, conference support, and learning opportunities. Being able to connect with the global ecosystem and learn from people doing incredible work is something I never take for granted. The team also supported me throughout the visa process, alongside Lea Petrasova and Martin Kuchař, and I really appreciate that. The Freedom Tech Summit and BTCPay Day were great opportunities to benchmark what is happening across the Bitcoin development ecosystem and understand what people are building, discussing, and prioritizing. I found myself looking at many things through the lens of events like #BtrustDeveloperDay and other initiatives that Btrust supports. One of my favorite parts was the design track at the Freedom Tech Summit, which placed a strong emphasis on the human experience in Bitcoin. Then came BTC Prague, which honestly blew my mind! The conference attracted thousands of attendees and featured 66 sponsors, which is remarkable in what many would describe as a bear market. Beyond the talks, I was fascinated by the attention to detail: the branding, the social media campaigns before, during and after the conference, the PR, booth activations, and the overall event experience. There was so much to learn just by observing how everything came together. Across all three events, the people stood out the most. I got to reconnect with friends, meet people I'd only known through online conversations, and build new relationships. Community has played such an important role in both my career and personal life, so moments like these remind me why I value it so much. It was a great week of learning, connecting, and getting inspired. Looking forward to carrying those lessons into the work we do at Btrust and hopefully making it back to Prague someday.🧡

  • Last week our team was in Prague for the Freedom Tech Summit, BTC Prague and BTCPay Server Day. Over the 5 days, we had the opportunity to connect, learn, and share ideas with builders across the Bitcoin ecosystem. The conversations felt intimate, thoughtful, and genuinely inspiring. A huge thank you to the organizers, volunteers, speakers, and everyone who made these events so memorable. Everything was incredibly well organized, creating the perfect environment for meaningful connection and learning. Special thanks to Martin Kuchař for his support in getting us to Prague and for putting together such a memorable experience. Until next time, Prague. 🇨🇿🧡
