While many people associate PTSD with military service or first responders, PTSD can impact people from all walks of life. Symptoms don't always look the way people expect and can include trouble sleeping, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding certain places or situations, or feeling disconnected from others. The good news is that PTSD is treatable, and recovery is possible. NAMI Ambassador Brad Gage shares some important insights about PTSD and why it's important to recognize that PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. This PTSD Awareness Month, take a moment to learn more about the signs of PTSD, available treatments, and ways to find support. For 23 years, Dr. Ken Duckworth has helped shape NAMI's approach to mental health through science, advocacy, and compassionate care. https://bit.ly/4oPMCic As NAMI's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ken has been a trusted voice for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions, helping push conversations around mental health toward greater humanity, dignity, and hope. Throughout his career, he has believed deeply in the importance of bringing together science and lived experience—an approach that has become a hallmark of NAMI's work. From championing innovative approaches to schizophrenia research and helping launch groundbreaking, discovery-advancing partnerships to authoring You Are Not Alone: The NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health, Dr. Ken's contributions have strengthened both NAMI and the broader mental health community. Many people know Dr. Ken as the host of NAMI Ask the Expert, where he connected directly with thousands of individuals seeking trusted information and support. Others know him from NAMICon, where he could often be found at the "Ask Dr. Ken" table, staying until every person in line had the opportunity to be heard. No matter the setting, his commitment to person-to-person connection has remained constant. While Dr. Ken is retiring from his role as Chief Medical Officer on June 30, he will remain a valued part of the NAMI community through his volunteer service with the NAMI HelpLine and the NAMI Scientific Advisory Council. We are deeply grateful for Dr. Ken's visionary leadership and 23 years of extraordinary contributions to NAMI. His professional legacy is one of resolute hope, and his impact on this organization and the broader mental health community will continue to be felt for generations to come. As we celebrate Dr. Ken's remarkable career, we are also pleased to welcome Dr. Christine M. Crawford, MD, MPH, as NAMI's Chief Medical Officer beginning July 1. Having worked alongside Dr. Ken for years, Dr. Crawford will continue advancing NAMI's commitment to science, education, advocacy, and lived experience as we enter this next chapter. Please join us in thanking Dr. Ken and congratulating him on a well-deserved retirement. Read more about Dr. Ken's retirement: https://bit.ly/4oPMCic

Community-based care helps people with mental illness live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares. NAMI is concerned that a recent U.S. Department of Justice opinion could threaten the availability of community-based care and undermine decades of progress rooted in Olmstead v. L.C., a landmark Supreme Court decision that has informed nearly 30 years of public policy and legal precedent around the right of individuals with disabilities to be integrated into their community. As Hannah Wesolowski, NAMI's Chief Advocacy Officer, stated: "All people — including people with mental illness — deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This opinion threatens the progress we have made to ensure that people with mental illness are treated like people with any other health condition, with the same rights and same level of care." NAMI will continue to fight to ensure that the rights of people with mental illness are protected and that we don't return to a time when institutionalization was all but inevitable. June is Men's Health Month, and we're taking a moment to honor all the fathers and father figures in our lives. ☕💙 No matter where you are on your fatherhood journey, your mental health matters. This #FathersDay, remember that strength isn't about carrying everything alone. It's okay to show emotion, ask for support, and take care of yourself, too.
