Thinking back to when my IT teacher sent a note home to my parents saying I should drop the subject due to an obvious lack of talent and interest Everyone can shine given the right environment with purpose and autonomy. I always choose to believe in the potential of people!

I still argue we need a Cloud Architecture Maturity Scale We need to stop using marketing words and agree on maturity levels 0 - on prem, custom server 1- on prem but PaaS 2 - containers/k8s 3 - containers (managed) 4 - serverless 5 - serviceful, event driven

Why do we call kubernetes cloud native? In what way is that native to the cloud? It seems more decoupled from the cloud since it uses only the most primitive abstractions. To me, the cloud is all about depending on other people for operations. Kubernetes is not that.

That’s right, big moment in my career today I was promoted to Senior Architect and moved so that I can work on developer experience across the whole of Liberty Mutual I’m super excited to get started and see what we can do in 2022 🎉

When we refactored an insurance rating process off the mainframe we just stood up the new service silently and compared the prices in real time until they matched 100% of the time. It requires planning but isn’t impossible. One year covers every renewal

As a non American in tech who has spent his whole career geographically in a different continent to his peers I can assure you that team performance is not directly correlated to how physically close they sit daily. Alignment and clear communication drives performance

It’s time to admit that Remote Work doesn’t work. WFH Friday is a 4 day work week. Full WFH is a 2 day work week. Every interaction has to be scheduled, which means a lot of information-sharing doesn’t happen. Remote is a great lifestyle, not a way to build a great company.

I advise everyone that titles are not your measure of success and to learn/enjoy your current role before considering the implications of moving up or laterally. If you keep your salary always move down :) It's not just a title in most cases, it's extra politics replacing coding

Surprised no one else has said this yet, so I'll bite. Yes, this is absolutely true, if titles are what you are optimizing for. Title inflation tends to get bundled along with a slapdash, shortcut-happy approach to engineering and mentorship.
