8:47 pm - Warm glass for a chilly day . . .

I’ve been firing up the kiln almost every day over the last few weeks. It all started with Star Tree. My kiln is small with only an 11” shelf, so can’t get too much in it at once, but I have managed to make a small pile of sparkly glass things.
I took pictures using a couple of different lens, filters, lensbaby & points of light. Nothing too serious, just having fun.

This is one of the most involved, but also the most fun I think I’ve ever had creating stained glass windows in all my 22 years of working in glass.
This glass project was a huge part of my life for about three and a half months earlier this year. Each of the three windows is 24”x18”. I used some unusual and hard to find art glass and many different techniques throughout. They ended up in their new home in Seattle, WA, (shipped by air across country from Florida) and hung as a triptych in a long transom over sliding glass doors. ( some pictures HERECollapse )

8:43 am - companion windows . . .

I've finished and photographed the two companion stained glass window commissions. These are custom pieces and my own original designs. Each window measures 30"x22" and is comprised of 5 different clear glass textures and bevels. They will be installed in backlit interior openings that are about 15 feet apart and about 12 feet up from the floor. ( hereCollapse )

I started working on this window a while ago. When I began, I took pictures of the process, because it is a little different than my usual work.
It all started with a commission that didn’t work out quite as I thought it would. The client had a large transom (5' long x 2’ high) over top of double doors inside their home. When I went there to check it all out, I noticed several eagle statues in different rooms of their home and suggested an eagle for the design. The transom was right over the doors of the one of the rooms with an eagle in it.
They had a really hard time trying to visualize it. I drew several designs for them to see, showed them the glass suggestions, but they finally said NO, it was just too wild looking. I thought it would be gorgeous and make such a statement, but I think they were just afraid of trying something different, and were leaning more towards a traditional window. Boring in my opinion. Then it was time for them to go north (to Canada) for the summer, so the whole project has been put on hold until they get back in November.
Anyway, since I already had the bevel cluster of the eagle, I decided to just go ahead and make a free-hanging window to sell. I drew the design for a 24” round window and I love how it turned out.

Behind the cut are some steps of the progression of this window. ( HERECollapse )

5:08 pm - Skyway Fish . . .

I finished a new window yesterday. Trying to add some interest and a new element to the stained glass, I etched the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (our link to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area) along with some gulls, into the sky background glass. I have etched before on a much smaller scale in windows, like a bird here or a dragonfly there, but never something this big. Of course, I wish I had a sandblasting chamber and equipment to go with it, but I had to settle on an Exacto knife, a piece of resist, and some etching cream. But I really like the way it turned out, showing the Skyway as a kind of ghostly, foggy presence in the background.
