Care for some Guys with your Ghosts and Goblins?

I'll be the jovial emcee at the Outlines Halloween Reading on October 28th in New York City at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.

So why not come by, sip some wine, listen to some terrific stories by

Tom Cardamone / Pumpkin Teeth

Jameson Currier / The Haunted Heart and Other Tales

and Sean Meriwether / The Silent Hustler

All book sales at Housing Works go to help people suffering from HIV, so it's a terrific cause.

Chance, who runs the cool podcast, Fanboys of the Universe, wanted to cover something appropriate for a gay old time this Halloween, and I was the lucky fellow he interviewed last night.

I listened to it this morning and thought, wow, I sound so... well, Jewish!. Ironically, I made sure to receive his phone call via a land-line (in the hope my voice would be clearer). I took the call at my parent's apartment in the Jewish senior citizen complex. So, should I blame the environment or just fess up to my mannerisms have come to resemble my father more and more.

Anyway, he asked some fun questions. I don't think I rambled too much. It was a flattering experience.

Here's the interview.

Hey there, I was wondering if somebody could help me.

I love The L Word and I can't get enough with the series (especially now that we have to wait for the fifth season; though it's coming soon!) and I'd like to read some books about that. Not just about lesbians, but about a group of lesbian friends, something that goes along the lines of The L Word.

If you know of any book, help would definitely be appreciated! :)
Thank you!

Subject:New Novel
Posted by:jbattis.
Time:6:30 pm.
Hi all,

ImageI'm new to the livejournal scene, but I'm hoping to meet some cool writers/readers and also stir up interest in my new novel.  I recently signed a 2-book deal with Ace/Roc for an urban fantasy/crime procedural series with a forensic twist.  The first book is called NIGHT CHILD, and the protagonist is a witch, working in Vancouver, who uses a mixture of current forensic technology and old-fashioned magic to solve crimes within the supernatural community.  Her official title is OSI, or Occult Special Investigator.

Now, I'm probably walking a fine line here between introducing myself and selling my work, but I'm more interested in getting feedback about the series than anything else.  I'd really love to start developing a good readership early on so that I have people to help me bounce around ideas before the books go to print.  Currently, NIGHT CHILD is slated to be out in the Spring of 2008, and the second novel, HEXTACY, will follow in 2009.

I've just started a new website and livejournal to provide more info about my work, and I'd love any and all feedback.  You can link to the website HERE, and the livejournal HERE.

I'd love to chat about the series as it develops, answer any questions--both about the books and about writing in general--and meet new readers and writers.  I've already connected with the folks at Fangs, Fur, and Fey and Urban Fantasy Fans communities, and they've been awesome.

Email me at:  jbattis@sfu.ca

Thanks!

Jes

Subject:Vintage's first review
Posted by:mroctober.
Time:4:43 pm.
Crossposted to my own LJ.

Received my first review of the novel. I'm trimming the spoilers...

"The suicidal gay teen who narrates this queer ghost story - he's never named - is the kind of kid who fancies black clothes and black eyeliner, entertains himself by going to the funerals of strangers, and meets his only real friend, Trace, a straight girl with a fondness for fags, at a Tim Burton movie. He's a lonely boy, and he's desperate to fall in love. Then he does: walking home one night, he's cruised by a handsome apparition - a high school student who died five decades in the past - and suddenly the lover of his dreams has come to life. But ghost boy, it turns out, is ...

Berman's bracing first novel straddles several easy-reading genres - coming-out, romance, fantasy, and young adult - with an abundance of stylish storytelling."

What will Winter Solstice bring in
2012?

...an instant of Karma? ...an ethereal spiral dance of the collective soul? ... cosmic judgment leveled against civilization's expanse? ...destruction of the world as we know it? ...a chance for a new start? ...the rise and the revenge of the Goddess? or simply another day in the life of paranoia?
These are the false prophesies that your pastor warned you about!

Crazy Bear said there'd be days like this. As usual, no one believed him. Now, all I want to know is: where IS that lifeboat, and how DO I ditch this ship of fools, without any of these bliss ninnies noticing that I'm already gone?

Captain, my ass. We are equal in this sea of madness.

That iceberg is looking awfully big.

New Age Metaphysical Books

"What the...?"

*A cranky band of prankster peace warriors who absolutely cannot resist messing with each other's minds, no matter the cost.

*Cocky alchemy-dabbling quantum surfers, navigating the Ethersphere with hand-held computers, switching timelines to find a better party vibe and swap tips about the best temporary toilets for use as interdimensional portals.

*A burnt-out visionary hippie millionaire on a mission from Gaia to build a better "communitopia" by underwriting a convoy carrying telepathic priestesses.

*A wheelchair-bound mindpilot propelling a crystal-powered Seed Bank toward the post-Apocalyptic Garden, with psychic precision...and a predilection for high-velocity extreme driving.

*Hermaphrodite time-jumper fleeing a fate worse than death.

*Anarchist ghettoes where anything goes-except escape.

*Ancient Principals vying like sweatsoaked carpetbaggers for our loyalty as the Final Vote is tallied.

Subject:Gay Poets Society
Posted by:sweet_minuet.
Time:8:34 pm.
I just wanted to let everyone in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community know about a fabulous new project that I hope everyone will take part in.

A friend of mine, Autumn Rose, wants to start a book of poetry made up of poems done by the people in the G.L.B.T community...about gay issues, life issues, girlfriend/boyfriend issues... life in general about being gay.

Its kinda like a post secret kind of concept and will HOPEFULLY be in full production in about 6 months. She will hopefully sell it to further the insight to the gay community, and possibly even give it to a publisher for actual STORE purchase. (if anyone has any tips for gay-friendly publishing companies, she's also new at that..)

Of course full credit for the works will be given to the author, and if the author chooses, each poem written will of course be followed by the author's name or alias, age (if wished) and location/state/country of the author.

I think its a really great opportunity to get our views out there, and perhaps even just... find someone that can relate to any situation we're all going through.

Vulgarity/ swearing definitely at a minimum, but not completely banned. I myself have a poem that says "ass"...

Other than that- the world is your oyster!

Her e-mail for it is : GayPoetsSociety@yahoo.com.

TELL EVERYONE! Let's get this project rolling!! Thanks guys :-D

Love. Loss. Memory. Choice. Friendship. Identity. Gender. Sexuality.

In a new collection of literary shorts, eleven new and experienced writers serve up queer in eleven different ways. Their accounts explore the queer world nearly four decades after Stonewall through unique, deeply personal perspectives.

The writers' diverse viewpoints take readers on a journey that spans four generations. Their stories explore, among other themes, the way that attraction can change identity and that new love can uncover the memory of a love lost. The pieces cover moments in time across the range of human experience, including the need to separate, wanderlust, and an extramarital affair.

Intense, often meditative, and embroiled in the power of recollection, this anthology explores many slices of queer culture through themes that will universally resonate with readers.

Queer Shorts features work from: Gayle Lloyd, Jeff Mann, William Reichard, Nairne Holtz, Ethereal, Alan Witchey, S.G. Reichen, Monica Dulberg, F.I. Goldhaber, Jen Burke and Sally Bellerose.

Hero of Flight 93: A Man Who Fought Back on September 11-Mark Bingham By Jon Barrett

A biography about Mark Bingham who happens to be gay. I was hoping to get a "gay perspective" on something (Sept 11 and the ensuing threats of terrorism over the past five years) that I eventually realized only need one perspective: an American one. This book spent a vast majority delving into Binghams past leading up to the events of Sept 11. However, I wish the author had also delved into the feelings and reactions of his family and friends not only of Sept 11, but of the death of their loved one as well.

Attention Due to a lack of response in the past few weeks the Young Adult Book Drive 4 Rural Libraries will be closing on June 10th. I would like to thank everyone who helped out either by making donations, giving me advice on the website or on where to find books. If you would like to make a final donation it would be very much appreciated. We've managed to collect around 280 books and help five libraries. I am still in possession of some of the donations and will be making the final delivery after the book drive closes. Thank you so much for everything!

Subject:YA Book Drive
Posted by:bookdrivegirl.
Time:5:08 pm.
Hello, perhaps you've seen my posts at another community or maybe you've spotted my website. My name is Jen and I have started a book drive for teens. My library has a very small young adult collection and so do the other public libraries in the area. I have been asking for people to make donations of used young adult books or to purchase one from our wish list at Amazon. Seeing as how I am a lesbian I know how important and helpful it can be to find a GLBT character in a teen book. I remember the first time I read "Annie on My Mind" and "The Year They Burned the Books" which is still one of my favorites. I am asking for you to remember your favorite teen book and what it meant to you and then consider making a donation. You will find several GLBT books on the Amazon wish list if you do not have a used book to send. Every book makes a difference. We of course are not looking just for books with gay themes, any teen book will do, fiction or non-fiction. The libraries that the donations will go to are small rural libraries in the New York Southern Tier.

Please take a few minutes and look at the book drive's website.
Thanks,
Jen

TALES FROM THE DEN: Wild and Weird Stories for Bears

Lethe Press is looking to release in late 2006 an anthology of supernatural stories featuring bears. No, for those stuck at the zoo, we're not talking Genus Ursa but burly gay men. Stories should be well-developed and may be erotic, but the thrills involved need not be smutty. We want more than the usual lycanthropy; send us stories that explore all the diversity within bear culture.

Stories may range from 1,500 - 7,500 words. Please e-mail submissions as a Word attachment or in the body of an e-mail to lethepress@aol.com. Include your name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address, as well as a 100-word or less bio. Contributors will receive two copies of the anthology and payment upon publication. Please direct all questions to the e-mail address above. Deadline for all submissions is March 31st, 2006.

Subject:free book swap site
Posted by:readitswapit.
Time:3:32 pm.
Would any of you guys be interested in joining a site that allows you to swap books for free?

It's my boyfriend's site and I think he's doing a really worthwhile
thing because it costs him money but he doesn't charge anything. He
set it up in his spare time.

It's called ReadItSwapIt (http://www.readitswapit.co.uk) and it's got
over 500 users now and two thousand books available for swapping.

It really helps to spread literacy, stop waste and recycle books in the UK.

It's the only 100 per cent free site of its kind.

hope you don't mind me posting this, i just thought it might be
something you'd like to know about.

It's a great way to get rid of unwanted Xmas book gifts.

Or if you want to buy a book, you can get it there instead, for free - and it won't waste trees, cos you're recycling old books at the same time.

If you like the idea, please do join and put a link up on your LJ links page to help spread the word - the more people who join up, the more books everyone has to swap with.

Unfortunately it's only available in the UK, but if you live in the USA I seriously recommend Bookins (http://www.bookins.com) which, like ReadItSwapIt, is totally free.

If you'd like any more information please feel free to get in
touch.
