I went home for the weekend. I was lucky, the weekend I decided to go home, Iron & Wine was playing in my hometown. I went to go see him. It was an amazing show. Calexico opened and later joined Sam Beam on stage to play some songs from In the Reins. Sam Beam is one of those artists that sound nothing like the album when playing live. This can most of the time be a good thing. I love artists like that. It shows authenticity in the music they play as well as a spontaneity that keeps the listener on their toes. When he played "Teeth in the Grass," one of my favorites by him, he was joined by a full band behind him and played it so amazingly that anyone who's only heard the album version has not truley heard this song.
That spontaneity, however, can sometimes turn out a little less than great. When he played "Woman King," not only one of my favorites, but my #1 favorite by him, it didn't compare to the album version I was used to. I was disappointed by his performance of this one song as it didn't seem to do the song justice.
Overall, however, it was certainly an amazing show. I had never heard Calexico before that night, save for a few songs they did with Iron & Wine on In the Reins. They were great. For those who don't know, Calexico is a band from, if I remember correctly, Tucson, Arizona. You can really hear this in their music. I've never been to Arizona, myself, but my image of the state is well-soundtracked by what I heard by Calexico. They have a latin/western quality to their sound that totally rocked my face out. The trumpets sound amazing.
It was strange coming back to a small town venue. This wasn't in Dallas, but in Fort Worth. I was never used to going to shows in Fort Worth. I'd always drive the half hour to Deep Elm for the small town shows. Fort Worth, I had forgotten, was a much more boring town. Although I had fun at the concert, the crowd was insanely chill. Sam Beam actually made a comment on how "well-behaved" the crowd was. Not much moving around or shouting at all. Granted it was an Iron & Wine show, but one would expect a little more reaction from the audience.
I didn't know Calexico well enough to catch a setlist, but I got down Iron & Wine's. He didn't play a few songs that I had wanted to hear, but he might have actually played them as an encore. I didn't wait for an encore, because it was already one in the morning and I was still on New York time, not to mention that I had plans after the show that I wanted to get to. Also, they had played a pretty full set and I doubted there would actually be an encore. Here's the setlist:

*This was a song I didn't recognize. I caught some of the lyrics and I thought I could look it up later online, but I looked it up and neither Iron & Wine nor Calexico had any songs with these lyrics. The only song I could find by anyone with these lyrics was "All Tomorrow's Parties," which they could have done a cover of. By the time I found these lyrics, however, I had forgotten the song I heard that night and I'm not sure if this was it.
As a sidenote, I will be leaving this community. Not only am I the only one holding the community, since it's not very active, but as of tomorrow, I will no longer fall under the category of an "indie teen." I turn twenty, tomorrow (Happy Birthday to me). So if anyone actually read the few posts I made on this community, there will be no more to come. Enjoy yourselves and hunt down and listen to the best music out there. Because without good music... well... fuck that! There had better always be good music!
