Speak - Laurie Halse Anderson [06 Feb 2008|08:09pm]

Hi all,

This is the first time I've posted here, not because I don't read, but mainly because I haven't read anything totally amazing lately. However, I just finished Speak and I am trying to get the word out to anyone who knows teenagers to get them to read this book. Well, anyone can read it, it's a great book, but it's geared toward teenagers. Anyway, here's what I posted in my LJ about it:

The Greatest Salesman in the World Part II – The end of the story [08 Nov 2006|10:29pm]

I found two chunks of one of my favorite books, 'The Greatest Salesman in the World  this is from the second part, if I’m correct it has only two, but I highly recommend both of them and wanted to share this sentences here.  The books are really short and easy to read, and if by any chance you are in some sort of client service business (not my case), they are even more of a treasure.  (As is also Memorandum of God, Og Mandino rocks.)  I have parts of those other two books I wish I could've shared but, they are in Spanish, so I'm being generous with the quoting here.

Hope you enjoy!

The Handmaid's Tale [10 Sep 2006|10:23pm]

Hi everyone!  I have been watching but today I joined because finally I have a review! Or something like it.

I just finished (ok, last Thursday) The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

I liked it a lot.  It has a daring style of narrative that is, only at some points, a little snoozing but in all, it’s perfect for the story.  The protagonist will describe with the detail of a diarist her actual life and in the middle of those narrations she will take you back in time to how her life was before.

A revolution has trapped her in a life where woman are only objects for reproduction, they are only valued for the children they can bare, if they can. Handmaids are given to Generals and their wives to give them children, they only have chance to try in 3 different houses.  If they fail to give babies, they are off to an uncertain destiny.

It was a great pocket book, I highly recommend it.

Today I started Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel by Susanna Clarke and so far it’s beautiful.

Wide Sargasso Sea [09 Sep 2006|09:59am]

Having read Jane Eyre, it felt only natural to follow it up with Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. It's a prequel to Jane Eyre that is listed as one Time's Best English Language Novels Since 1923. If you haven't read Jane Eyre, even the vaguest plot summary would be a spoiler, so don't peek under the link! If you've read Bronte's work but not Rhys', don't worry. There is nothing I could spoil for you.

Just wanted to introduce myself. Tea recommended that I swing on by after deluging my personal journal with 10 book reviews in one night. Currently reading Jane Eyre, which has to be the most alluded to book that I've never read. Will post about it when I'm done!
