11:09 pm - Realizations
I find that the longer I go without cleaning study the less angry I am at thermodynamics when I do take on the task.

I took this from Imagebonobocrat

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded.

Bold the ones you've read,
underline the ones you read for school,
italicize the ones you started but didn't finish.
add * beside the ones you liked and would (or did) read again or recommend. Even if you read them for school in the first place.

And I'm adding strike through to books that are on my shelf that I haven't read.  In the spirit of where this list came from, this seems appropriate.

10:11 pm - Countries
70

A full 1/5 of countries that are nameable! Although, I had no idea that "The Turks and Caicos" are an official country. Are there any rules regarding this? I think that Key West declared its independence from the republic quite some time ago, and their name was not on the final list.

Things to ponder..

11:06 am - Things that are driving me bonkers... "Nuke-less Iran"...
Less articulate than it needs to be, but I can't engage in a discussion about it right now:

Iran hasn't been making nuclear weapons, just like they had been saying all along.

Unbelievable. What's to say that Iran couldn't start "another covert nuclear weapons program?" How about the fact that high level intelligence analysis rules it out until 2010 at the very, very earliest, AND THEY AREN'T SHOOTING FROM THE HIP WHEN MAKING FOREIGN POLICY STATEMENTS?????? (YELLING!!!!!!)

Further, I can has nuclear weapons expert explain to the public just how big the gap between "enriched uranium" and "nuclear weapons" is, pleeeeze?

4:29 pm - Microsoft..
I like to think that computers as a whole have made life easier. With basic computer skills, including a reasonable typing speed, programming ability, and knowledge of several different platforms, I think I'm in pretty decent shape when it comes to all things Modern ENIAC.

So why, oh why, does "Bullets and Numbering" in Microsoft Word continue to be such a completely confounding experience?

I type notes during meetings. Nicely numbered lists appear where I don't want them, but so as to avoid swearing in front of those significantly above my pay grade, I let it go. Later, when properly formatting, I can usually get documents looking just the way I want them, but then avoid editing entirely for fear of somehow upsetting the whole works yet again. If you're looking at a document of someone else, forget it entirely. I've re-written documents just to avoid this particular absurdity of technology. I wish there were an easier way.

This was way funnier in my head. I think the bullets sapped a lot of it.

7:13 am - Tennessean -
I'm often asked what I think of Tennessee.  My immediate response is always "It's hot."  This typically elicits a laugh or a chuckle, but little commiseration: "It's hot here too!  It was in the mid 80's today!"
I've always found talking about the zeroth order aspects of the weather to be a little banal, but this has entered an entirely new mindset.  It has been above 90 degrees here every day for the last 25 days, most of those days have been upper 90s.  And it's a wet heat, so that tacks on a few degrees, plus some extra goop that sticks to your skin.  It's hot!!

3:40 am - Descent into madness.
I hate moving. I hate thinking about it. I hate packing. I hate that I dread the action of moving so much.

The oddly romantic part about moving is the notion of going somewhere else, particularly now that the move is truly for something else, and not because I have to escape yet another crazy landlord.

I just wish that I didn't have to put all of my stuff into boxes to get there. Again. Because that part is terrible.

I might not be right in some of my more militant views... but this is definitely not how to convince me otherwise.

Seriously? You want to bypass the intellect to tell me about the universe? And that's your opener?

Probably because I was preoccupied with the possibility of moving, I neglected to note the passage of June 1, which marked one full year living in just one location.

8:52 pm - Music Meme...
With the hat tip to Imagesamfeasor

Everyone has musical crushes. Find ten music videos of ten of yours, and then post YouTube links. So we can drool with you, or ask you if you've hit your head. It lets you procrastinate, and lets us do the same by clicking on your links. Plus we might get cool new music.

1. Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life

<object width="425" height="350">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zwFS69nA-1w"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zwFS69nA-1w" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350" allowScriptAccess="never"></object>

My favorite music video *ever*.  Bar none.

2.  Bjork - All is Full of Love

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EjAoBKagWQA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EjAoBKagWQA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I happened upon it shortly after a re-read of 2001, and was obsessed with the idea of emoting computers.  Plus, Bjork is just amazing.

3.  OK Go - Here it Goes Again

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pv5zWaTEVkI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pv5zWaTEVkI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I think that everyone who's ever heard of YouTube has seen this, but this is cute and quirky, and definitely wins the prize for best music video featuring treadmills.

4. The Postal Service - Brand New Colony

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMAxi2uakpQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xMAxi2uakpQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I think Brand New Colony is the best love song I've ever heard.  This video doesn't really capture the spirit of the song, but I love its frenetic use of color and free spirit.

5. Girl - Beck

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/13iLkTrDlbI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/13iLkTrDlbI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I sometimes wonder what really intense drugs are like.  This probably could have been a little better, but I highly enjoy the surreal nature of the first closing incident.

6. Madonna - Express Yourself

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YMt53HYkfY8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YMt53HYkfY8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Hell. Yeah.

7. Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t7tTpow2fLo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t7tTpow2fLo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I think that life was better musically before I knew what the band members of Pink Floyd actually looked like, but this is one of my personal inspiration boosts whenever I'm feeling a bit low.  Just remembering the soaring across the beautiful landscape, and the notion of "Just maybe...."

8. So Long and Thanks For All the Fish

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bG6b3V2MNxQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bG6b3V2MNxQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

We miss you, Douglas.

9. Guster - Fa Fa (Never Be the Same Again)

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iksvvYE3yAQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iksvvYE3yAQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Not quite sure I get it, but a great song.  I think that it has this really neat aspect of "just how much randomness can be crammed into one video?"

10.  Ani DiFranco - Untouchable Face

<embed><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SjK8zPO1HkM"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SjK8zPO1HkM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

This video is brilliant.  The narrative, the imagery, just... perfect.

5:07 pm - Dinner for One!
I'm sure this isn't the most revolutionary idea to come along in quite some time, but here goes anyhow.

The world needs a line of grocery stores who's primary mission is to cater to single people. Young or old, I don't care, but definitely entertaining the "dinner for one" concept, and not in the cheap cop out of the frozen television dinner variety.

I'm talking manageable portions of fresh food for single people, thus avoiding the conundrum of "what do I do with these other four pieces of pork that I'm just not interested in eating right now". Where never again do you have to suffer the withering stares of the butcher shop clerk when you ask for a half pound of ground beef, and are asked, in an equally withering manner if "a little over", (read: twice what you asked for), will suffice (I said a half pound, not a whole pound, this is not rocket surgery.)

Piles of lettuce that can be eaten in a single salad. Yes, I do want just a quarter pound of cheese. Pasta dishes that feed 1, not six. Just two beers, thanks. In fact, a quart of milk will suit me for a few good days. Some cookbooks with easy and delicious meals that one person can make all for themselves.

I'm interested in two things here: 1. reducing my food cost, and 2. reducing the amount of food I waste. Many a sausage link or chicken breast has crawled to the back of my freezer to die a second death by freezer burn after beginning a promising existence as part of a fun and friendly "value pack", and I have lost plenty of salad product to the whimsies of time and fuzz. There has to be a reasonable enough sized single population, particularly in these parts, to make something like this viable.

6:24 pm - House and home 13 - Rumination on ceiling paint...
Again, I find myself covered in little specks of ceiling paint, the kind that makes the "popcorn" texture on the ceiling, albeit this time in my bedroom.

The wildly irritating thing about this is that even though I sanded and primed the entire bedroom ceiling _twice_, the last little bit of rolling managed to strip away the underlying paint. *grumble* I patched it for now, and hopefully will be able to cover it so it doesn't look ghastly, but still. The. Last. Stroke.

On to fixing nail pops tonight, and then sanding/priming tomorrow when I take about a half day at work. I suspect that things will be rather obnoxious this weekend, but my aim is to paint the walls on Saturday/Sunday, provided it isn't pouring rain or snowing.

9:10 pm - House and Home 12 - The importance of drilling into studs...
Over the last few days I'd taken to placing laminate flooring in my closet, and then proudly hanging brackets and a new closet bar.

Most of which just came crashing down on my hand.

Owch.

Stupid... me. Need to remount the bracket, ensuring that I nail it into a stud, and not rely on the molly screw to keep it mounted to the sheetrock.

Or stupid me, get rid of some of my damn clothes!

6:28 am - Why, Old Navy.... why?
Apparently, Old Navy has endeavored to single handedly change my fashion by discontinuing the line of perfect fit tee shirts. Alas. I had just retired one of my next to last to rags just the other day. Had I know it was going to be a moment of significance, I would have given the situation proper weight.

Also, the $8 jar of spaghetti sauce was not good. Not by a long shot. I would hazard to call it "oily and sweet". And it was tomato basil. A keen lesson learned, and a mistake I shan't be repeating.

This had better be mighty good spaghetti sauce.
