Hello, any people in this forum! Maybe I'm just suffering a mild withdrawal from music of the sort that belongs here: our ever so efficient Homeland Security or whatever it's called has made it even sillier and more frustrating for musicians from the UK to tour the US, to the point that many great performers don't bother. Plus, I've been kicked off the community radio station where I had a weekly folk show SINCE 1987, because they needed more room for songwriters....am working up to making podcasts, but it is taking some time. Financial concerns have kept me from travelling to Britain for festivals, these past two summers, so what with one thing and another I am feeling a bit left out.

Who's on this site? What are your favourite singers/dancers/musicians up to? What songs are you working on, if you sing/play? What's the state of trad music where you are? What do you think people should be listening to, that we may not have encountered yet?

I am in St Louis MO: it's a good blues town, there's a healthy bluegrass community, we have a small but thriving folk school that caters mainly to old-time instrumentalists, fiddlers and such-- but I have been teaching a ballads class there for going on two years. I am artistic director for a folk club which has existed in some form or other since 1975: ( www.thefocalpoint.org for those of you who are interested.) We have contra dancing, cajun dance, a gay square dance club, and two morris teams, one Cotswold and one Border.

Among my all-time best-loved musicians are Mike Seeger, Peter Bellamy, Almeda Riddle, the various permutations of the Waterson/Carthy family; Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, John Renbourn, Andy Irvine, Martin Simpson, Paddy Keenan, Dave Van Ronk, Louisa Killen, and the Boys of the Lough.

And then of course there's Les Barker. And the Kippers.

In recent years I have also come to love Tim Van Eyken, The Devil's Interval, Damien Barber and his crew, Sam Lee, and Fiddlers' Bid.

In general I am not so much a fan of romantic female voices with echo effects; a closer, edgier sound suits me better, but I am willing to listen to anyone decent.

Looking for a particular type of folk

I'm looking for something like this
(Plan 7, "The Funeral Of Théodred" feat. Miranda Otto) - it's a kind of reconstructed Anglo-Saxon singing, but it sound a lot like Icelandic or similar vocals.

Any suggestions?

There's all sorts of stuff going on - ceilidhs, morris tour, dance, music and song workshops...even orange-jousting! It's the longest continuously-running folk festival in the country and it's absolutely fantastic!!!

Saturday Morning Workshops to begin at Cecil Sharp House on 19 April
EFDSS ANNOUNCES SATURDAY MORNING MUSIC WORKSHOPS

The English Folk Dance and Song Society is proud to announce a series of Saturday workshops at Cecil Sharp House. The workshops are set to begin on 19 April 2008. Sessions are geared toward beginners, although students of all levels of experience are welcome. Classes will occur on the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 10.30-12.30 at Cecil Sharp House in Camden Town. The series will feature widely renowned teachers, lecturers, and workshop leaders. Instruction will be offered in banjo, piano accordion, and voice . Each day will include both classes and lectures, with classes in the morning and lectures following. Please see the EFDSS web page for more information.

Classes will run for two terms. The first term will begin on 19 April and end on 19 July, and the second will begin 6 September and run through 12 December. Instructors include Ed Hicks (banjo), Paul Hutchinson (Accordion), Sam Lee (voice), and Tim van Eyken (voice). Lecturers include Malcolm Taylor, Vic Gammon , Doc Rowe, Shirley Collins, John Howson, and Reg Hall.

Places in the workshops are limited, so advance booking is recommended. Some instruments may be available for students who do not have their own; please call Cecil Sharp House on 0208 485 2206 to enquire about instruments or to book a place.

Looking for song sessions
Hello! I'll be visiting Scotland and Ireland this May, and I'd like to base my trip around the available sessions. I know where I can find instrumental sessions; however, I'd like to find as many song sessions along the way as I can.

Can anyone recommend one (or more!) to me? I'll be in both N and R Ireland as well as Scotland. Will also be in London for a few days late April.

Traditionally-focused music, song, and dance competitions? [xposted]
As part of my work for EFDSS, I've been asked to put together a list of traditionally-focused music, song, and dance competitions in the UK, with an eye to those with a national scope (although we'd like to look at healthy regional competitions as well).

We're interested in sponsoring some prizes for these awards, but we can't do that if we don't know what they are!

Is there a listing anywhere (various google searches haven't come up with one, so I'm not hopeful) of competitions? Even a listing of competitions for specific instruments would be great.

If you know of a list, or of a competition I might not have heard of (or even one you're sure I msut have heard of!) please leave it in a comment?

Folk for babies
I've been wondering about whether I could create a "Folk For Babies" collection, like the Classic FM for Babies one, that I could use when playing with my newborn daughter - and thought I'd put it out for suggestions for what I could include. And save me from going round the twist with the usual crap that's out there for kids.
This could be either songs - strong story songs, or classics - or people's definitive versions thereof. For example, I'd quite like to have Daddy Fox in the collection, but am torn as to whether I take the Ben Dauncey version of it, or the Witches of Elswick's, or another one.

So far I'm thinking Daddy Fox, Richard Thompson's "My Daddy is a Mummy" (lovely song he wrote for his son's Egyptology project), and Kristin Hersh's "What'll we do with the baby?" from her Murder, Misery and then Goodnight album.

What can anyone else come up with? What folk songs have stuck with you since you were a kid?

BBC Looking For Traditional Dancers
Cecil Sharp House got a call from the BBC this afternoon, and they asked us to pass this information along. Please get in touch with us if you'd like us to pass along your information to the BBC.

To all traditional dancers:

The BBC have contacted EFDSS to try and find traditional dancers to take part in their new series "Dance EX. "

This is a TV competition from the same producers as "Strictly Come Dancing". The BBC feel that traditional dance is not being represented in the auditions they have held so far, and they would welcome any dancers from the Morris/Clog and country dance tradition. They mentioned that traditional dress/costume is a bonus and that groups or solo dancers can audition although they are looking for individuals.

The auditions take place this Saturday 19th of May and next Saturday the 26th of May at the BBC television centre from 9.00am.

ETA: BBC guy rang back and said they are only happening this Saturday. Usual BBC notice of anything; they want it yesterday.

If you are interested in taking part please contact us at Cecil Sharp House as soon as possible so that we can pass your information to them.

The BBC are so desperate to get traditional dancers that your auditions will take priority over others. So get your name down if this sounds like something for you!

Sidmouth camping and parking
I can't find anything about this on the Sidmouth website so I'm hoping you guys can help.
Some friends are pushing me to go to Sidmouth this year. I can't go for the whole thing as I am busy both weekends, but I thought I might pop down for 2 or 3 days during the week and just pay on the door for anything I want to see.
If I do this, is it possible for me to use the campsite? Is it possible to get in and out during the week, and will there be any space left? I don't mind paying for the week's camping but I won't arrive until Tuesday. And is there anywhere I can park my car?

Kahala, I really hope you don't mind me posting this information in your community. Looking over the community's interest list, so many of my favorite things are on it. I definitely plan to stick around.

A couple of the bands in these events (namely As All Die, Life Toward Twilight, and Thomas Nöla et son Orchestre) aren't folk at all, and believe me, if the event consisted of just those bands, I wouldn't post this here.

Hello. None of these bands are strictly traditional folk (and As All Die, Life Toward Twilight, Thomas Nöla et son Orchestre aren't folk music at all), but Changes and The Lindbergh Baby have elements of tradition running through them. (And I mean really old tradition, as in, ancient pagan/heathen themes.) I don't know if anyone in this community lives anywhere near the event, but the least I could do is share some music with you. I cannot recommend Changes enough. They formed in Chicago in the late '60's. Really timeless and beautiful. Worth checking out for anyone interested in the folk music of that era, and folk music in general. Just two men, one playing acoustic guitar, both singing harmonies. Very poetic lyrics. The Lindbergh Baby and The Ancient and the Transmundane have elements of psych folk, and The Lindbergh Baby even has a bit of country and blues to it. (As All Die and Life Toward Twilight are for anyone interested in experimental and noise music, while et son Orchestre is sort-of ragtime with really creative modern production.) If anything, you can hear these bands (except The Lindbergh Baby, sadly) play live on Prime Audio Soup on </i>WRIU on Friday, April 20th from 9 pm to midnight Eastern Standard Time!
