Giorgi Kuchuashvili, Convicted Over 2024 Spring Protests, Leaves Prison After Serving Sentence

Giorgi Kuchuashvili, convicted over involvement in the spring 2024 protests against the reintroduction of the foreign agents law, left prison on May 8 after serving a two-year sentence on charges of resisting a police officer.

Kuchuashvili, arrested in May, was initially sentenced to four years in prison after Judge Mikheil Jinjolia found him guilty of “assaulting a police officer.” While the defense admitted that he threw a water bottle toward riot police, resulting in a minor injury to a police officer, it rejected the legal classification. Appeals court Judge Davit Mamiseishvili later reclassified the offense as the lesser charge of “resistance, threat or violence” against a law enforcer, reducing the sentence to two years.

Giorgi Kuchuashvili is the third protester convicted over the Spring 2024 protests to leave prison after serving a sentence. Earlier, in November 2025, two other protesters, Omar Okribelashvili and Saba Meparishvili, were released after serving 18 months in prison on property damage charges related to the same protests.

Today, it was also reported that another protester jailed in the same context, Pridon Bubuteishvili, who is serving a five-year sentence on allegations of property damage and throwing a stone at a firefighter, has applied for a pardon and is awaiting a decision.

Five other protesters remain in jail in connection with the 2024 spring protests against the Foreign Agents Law. Davit Koldari, Giorgi Okmelashvili, and Irakli Megvinetukhutsesi were convicted on protest-related charges, while Ucha Abashidze and Mariam Iashvili, who were also arrested in the context of the spring 2024 protests, were convicted of illegally obtaining and storing private life secrets.

More than 100 individuals remain in prison in protest – or opposition-related criminal cases, convicted or pending trial, including dozens arrested in the initial weeks of the pro-EU demonstrations that broke out on November 28, 2024, and up to 60 jailed in the aftermath of the October 4, 2025, election-day unrest.
