Backlash 2026 è stata la ventunesima edizione dell'omonimo premium live event prodotto dalla WWE.

Annunciato il 31 gennaio 2026,[1] l'evento si è svolto il 9 maggio 2026 alla Benchmark International Arena di Tampa in Florida ed è stato trasmesso su ESPN negli Stati Uniti,[2] su Netflix in tutti i paesi in cui è disponibile il servizio e sul WWE Network nei restanti paesi.

Storyline

In seguito all'espulsione di Seth Rollins dalla Vision e al conseguente infortunio subito,[3] a Royal Rumble, nel corso del match omonimo, un individuo mascherato attaccò Bron Breakker, causandone l'eliminazione.[4] Successivamente, diversi individui mascherati presero di mira i membri della Vision, attaccandoli ripetutamente.[5][6] Durante questo periodo, gli attacchi terminarono a causa di infortuni subiti da Breakker e da Bronson Reed. Il 28 febbraio a Elimination Chamber il rientrante Rollins si rivelò l'aggressore mascherato dopo aver interferito nel match attaccando l'altro membro della Vision Logan Paul.[7] Nella prima notte di WrestleMania 42, Rollins perse il suo match contro Gunther dopo che Breakker tornò e colpì Rollins con una spear.[8] Dopo settimane di attacchi reciproci, il 27 aprile a Raw, Rollins sfidò Breakker per Backlash e nel corso della puntata il match fu ufficializzato.[9]

Nella seconda notte di WrestleMania 42, Trick Williams, accompagnato dal rapper Lil Yachty, sconfisse Sami Zayn conquistando il WWE United States Championship.[10] Nella puntata successiva di SmackDown, durante la celebrazione di Williams e Yachty, si unì a loro una mascotte omino di pan di zenzero, che Williams aveva già usato la settimana precedente per deridere Zayn, ma questa volta dentro al costume c'era proprio Zayn, che colpì il suo avversario con Helluva Kick.[11] La settimana successiva, Zayn distrusse il costume della mascotte e dopo la rissa tra i due, il general manager Nick Aldis ufficializzò il match per Backlash.[12]

Nell'episodio di SmackDown del 6 marzo, Danhausen, dietro consiglio del general manager Nick Aldis, chiese a The Miz di diventare il suo maestro, ma quest'ultimo rifiutò e di contro Danhausen lo "maledì". Nelle settimane successive, Miz e il suo alleato Kit Wilson continuarono a subire le maledizioni di Danhausen che si trasformavano in una serie di incidenti e varie sfortune che gli fecero perdere anche dei match. Tuttavia i due, si rifiutarono di credere che la "maledizione" fosse vera.[13] Dopo un altro scontro avveuto durante la seconda notte di WrestleMania 42, il 25 aprile a SmackDown, The Miz perse anche contro Danhausen dopo un altro malfunzionamento dei fuochi d'artificio,[14] e nell'episodio del 1° maggio, Miz disse di credere nella "maledizione" e accettò di fare da mentore a Danhausen. In seguito, Wilson apparve e implorò Miz di non unirsi a lui, ma sebbene inizialmente sembrasse allearsi con Danhausen, lo attaccò. Nel corso della puntata, Danhausen chiese a Nick Aldis un match di coppia contro Miz e Wilson a Backlash, il general manager glielo concesse a patto che Danhausen trovasse un partner.[15]

In seguito al tradimento di Asuka e Kairi Sane ai danni di Iyo Sky (gelose della sua amicizia con Rhea Ripley),[16] le quattro lottarono spesso sia in match singoli che di coppia, spesso terminati con le vittorie di Ripley e Sky.[17][18] Dopo le numerose sconfitte, Asuka incolpava la sua partner Kairi Sane e per redimersi agli occhi della sua senpai, il 23 marzo a Raw le ordinò di interferire nel match di Sky, ma la kohai non fece nulla. Dopo settimane di attacchi da parte delle due giapponesi e poi della sola Asuka (Kairi Sane fu licenziata il 24 aprile),[19][20][21] le due si sfidarono in un match per Backlash, che fu ufficializzato il 27 aprile.[22]

Nella seonda serata di WrestleMania 42, Roman Reigns vinse il World Heavyweight Championship.[23] Durante i festeggiamenti di Reigns e degli Usos la notte seguente a Raw, furono interrotti da Jacob Fatu, che disse al campione che voleva tutto quello che aveva lui, incluso il titolo e di conseguenza lo sfidò per Backlash. Reigns dichiarò di non pensare che Fatu fosse pronto per un match per il titolo e disse che gli avrebbe dato una settimana prima di prendere la sua decisione.[24] Passati i sette giorni, Reigns ribadì non fosse pronto per un match titolato e che dargliene uno sarebbe stato nepotismo. Dopo di che Fatu attaccò il campione e quest'ultimo accettò la sfida.[25]
