I'm so glad you're a part of our little exchange that could. Thanks so much for that.
My fic likes are pretty broad. I don't think I've ever received an exchange fic that I haven't loved and gone back to time and time again. Your chances of making me happy are pretty much 100%. So, specifics...
So clearly, I love any and all combinations of the ladies of this show. I may perhaps have a special love for Aunt Gayle, with her cats and her mumbling and her sad apartment and her very special art and music. But literally any permutation or combination of these ladies and the hijinks they always get up to would thrill me.
So obviously, I'm all about Joan. (Not so much a Kitty fan, but if you wanna throw her in there somewhere I wouldn't be mad, per se.) I think her relationship with her mom is something that is so begging for fic exploration, but then there's Ms. Hudson, and I ship it. But I also friend-ship it, and both are good. I can't get enough Ms. Hudson so even if you want to focus elsewhere, if she's hanging around in the background, I wouldn't be mad at that, either! I also like Joan's friend Carrie, and if you wanted to play with that relationship, again, as friendship or something else, two thumbs up from me.
Okay, I love this show. A lot. I love the intergenerational relationship between Jane, her mother and grandmother, and the love and care they have for one another even when emotions are running high and they may not like one another in the moment. Stories about them, particularly set before the events of the show, or the things we haven't seen during the show, that would just melt my heart. But I'm also intrigued and entranced by the relationship between Petra and her mom Magda. What a pair they are! And I think that barely hidden layer of criminality could make for a fun story if you're so inclined. And then there are the terror twins, Victoria and Valeria. Any exploration of them, as they're so wonderfully unwritten so far, could be a great thing, on their own, or relating to their relationship with their not-really-a-big-sister Jane.
Obviously, as the namesake of the exchange, this show is special to me, and the characters are too. I like the combination of the coworkers. I like the combination of Leslie and Ann as BFFs especially as they're now geographically separated. I like explorations of the weird truce April and Ann eventually came to. I like the idea of looking at Leslie and her never-satisfied Mom. I like poking at Leslie and her weird relationships with Shawna and Joan as the leading ladies of Pawnee media. Something that brought Ann back to Pawnee in the future we glimpsed in the last season ending episode? I'd eat that up like a hot fudge sundae with nuts and whipped cream.
So it's a little bit of coworkers/friends, and a little bit of family. What happens with Vick & O'Hara in the Bay Area? What happens when Marlowe & Big Wendy come up for a girls weekend/revisiting of what Marlowe's bridal shower weekend would've been without the whole mob kidnapping? What about a day when Aunt Barbara comes up to visit with Karen and Iris? How about an exploration of Juliet and her future mother in law Madeleine? Or does Chief Vick call Madeleine to do assessments of the staff at her new job? Or hey, bring it all back to Santa Barbara, I'm okay with that. I'm okay with any of it.
This, for me, is all about women who have extremely important, extremely hard jobs, and how they interact with one another. (Plus the mother/daughter pair.) Skip the politics and focus on the personal, or go the entire opposite way. Day in the life explorations, or something outside of work hours -- those were some of my favorite moments, like when the women got drunk with Mrs. Bartlet during that banquet when Donna was Canadian, or the poker game when C.J. was trying to stand an egg on end, or the chili dinner in "Crackpots and These Women." Kate & Nancy would be a huge challenge, because we actually never saw them together, and their jobs were larded in secrets, but I think that means that there's room to just go to town, imaginatively. A lot of people who love TWW don't write it because they feel like they can't do it justice because they aren't Sorkin. To be honest, I don't like Sorkin. I like people who can write emotional complexity and meaningful interaction between women (hence this exchange) and Sorkin suuuuuuuuucks at that. So you know, if you're in that place, trust me when I say that I'm glad you're not Sorkin!
So that's it. Above all else, I hope you have fun writing this story. I hope you tell a story that you really want to tell, even if it would need a little fine-tuning to fit into my very general requests. I will do my best to give you really great feedback on whatever you write, and I will be grateful no matter what, because I really do think it's awesome when people write stories for me. General Yayness
I have lots of things that'd make me squeeful. I love funny. But I also love drama, and hurt/comfort and serious plot. I'm big on chosen/created family being family, domesticity, sexy sex and smutty smut, (where femslash is indicated, of course) but also totally pants-on happy friends together times and people doing what they do every day and being competent (or not, as appropriate) and cool and awesome.Squick
There are some things that don't sit well with me, generally, in fic. I'm not so much for super sad stuff. Major characters dying, being badly hurt (physically or emotionally), or being subjected to (non-canon) sexual violence would be bad. For any characters, -isms are my major bugbear, particularly mental illness/intellectual disability and the words to describe it (crazy, nuts, stupid, idiot, etc.) being used casually. That throws me right out of a story in a really bad way, even if it's canonically something a character would say.This Year's Requests
I don't have terribly specific prompts to offer, which I realize may be hard. I have relationships I prefer, and the reasons why I like them, but not scenarios, because truly anything you imagine would please me, and I don't want to tie your hands or stifle your creativity. Does that sound like a copout? I know some people want a lot of guidance, and others are happy with very little. If you need something more than I've given, please feel free to ask a friend to ask me. (I'll probably know who you are anyway, since I run this thing, but we can pretend.)Bob's Burgers
