The scariest part of the 52 years of stalking isn’t even the stalking. It’s that Armand knows every bad thing Daniel has ever done and he doesn’t care.
Daniel knows he’s an asshole. He’s potentially the most self-aware character. He knows he hurt his ex-wives and his daughters. He understands that they hate him and he frequently validates their decision to do so. He gets it. He’s not hiding from his mistakes. He knows what he’s done. People leave him because anyone sane would. There’s no malice there. He knows who he is.
But here is this beautiful, ancient creature who has lived through some of the most incredible periods of human innovation in modern history, who lived in Renaissance Venice and witnessed Paris return to its former glory after World War 2 , who has been exposed to some of the most important works of art in history, who has had so much time to absorb humanity and all its most impressive creations, and this creature tells him he’s in love with him, some random kid he met half a century ago by chance.
And not just that he’s in love with him. That he was actively in love with him while he was doing all the terrible things. None of it ever mattered. Armand has seen every shade of Daniel’s soul, more than anyone else ever has, and he is in love with him because of it. It is one thing to have your mistakes exposed, it’s another entirely for someone to see them and decide to stay.
Armand has so freely given to Daniel what he has been trying to find for himself for half a millennia. The only thing he has ever wanted: to be truly known and accepted for everything you are, including the unseemly, ugly parts. How utterly and completely terrifying.
I think this is the most dangerous and beautiful aspect of their relationship. As an addict, so much of your life is wrestling with the disease and the way it impacts those around you. Imagine all of the shame and guilt left in the wake of the things you did a rock bottom. Armand is someone born centuries ago who exists completely outside of the spectrum of contemporary human morality. Imagine someone being a spectre to the worst things you’ve ever done and still loving you. It’s salvation but it can also be damnation. Because humans have limits, no matter how much they love you. So what happens when the devil loves you for all the damned things you’ve done?
When a human says “I love you unconditionally,” there’s this sense of wistfulness because…no, there are always conditions. You just haven’t found those limits yet. Pray that you never do.
When a vampire says “I love you unconditionally,” fuck. They’ve seen and done it all. Whatever you’ve done, it can’t possibly be worse. The worst in you is a feature, not a bug. It’s just true.
And he turned him… He saw everything, the good, the bad, the horrible, the very ugly and he said: you should have eternity, I think you should live forever
So, you know how certain Christian missionaries are trained to act in a very obnoxious way, so that most people they preach to will reject them outright, so they feel like the world hates them for being Christian and they can only be friends with fellow Christians? You know that thing?
I think as activists, we sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves whether we’re acting like those missionaries. I think this type of behavior is a little more ingrained into our society than some of us realize, and some of us have internalized it without realizing what it’s actually meant to do.
OP I know that this is probably a different direction than you were going, but genuinely this advice would do so so much to help people not fall into secular political cults.
A lot of high control groups use this tactic to isolate their members. It’s absolutely not just evangelizing Christians. New age wellness cults often encourage their members to make outlandish and offensive accusations regarding the mental and physical health of other people or their children, because they know that the backlash their members receive will reinforce the idea that the “mainstream” simply has no room for people who like crystals and essential oils. White supremacist cults will seed the vocabulary of new recruits with Nazi dog whistles that fly over those recruits heads, specifically so that they will get clocked as possible neo-Nazis and shunned by anyone who might offer them another perspective and help them to get out before it’s too late. And a lot of left-leaning political cults strongly encourage members to share their views in the most inflammatory ways possible, and then say “you see? everyone outside of this small circle is evil and cannot be relied on” when, inevitably, that produces bad results.
Sometimes I think that activists fall into these patterns completely accidentally, either because they were raised in culturally Christian evangelical environments and never unpacked it, or else because they just aren’t any good at approaching things in a non-inflammatory way and no one’s shown them how.
…But sometimes, these structures emerge in activist circles because those circles are legitimately becoming high control groups.
I think some things to watch out for especially in this regard are:
Are you being directed to behave in an extremely hostile and alienating way? (even if it’s by someone who you trust!)
Does the group you are in immediately shut down any conversation about the effectiveness of an antagonistic strategy? In particular, do they shut that conversation down using in-group stock phrases?
Is experiencing harsh rejection seen as something of a rite of passage?
Do you receive more validation from the group you are in after you have been rejected by someone outside the group than at any other time?
Have you ever been concerned that the antagonistic strategy you are using hurt someone you cared about, only to be quickly advised by members of the group that that person was toxic and that you should actually completely cut them out of your life?
These to me are all pretty significant red flags about the group in question, whatever the specific thing that brings people together there is. If you start noticing them in a group that you are a part of, be that an in-person activist circle or a Discord server or anything in between, take a step back and seriously consider the possibility that the good thing that you joined is turning into something different, and possibly dangerous.
In the words of Jonestown survivor Deborah Layton, “Nobody joins a cult. You join a self-help group, a religious movement, a political organization. They change so gradually, by the time you realize you’re entrapped – and almost everybody does – you can’t figure a safe way back out.”
even if you feel confident you are not and have never been in a cult, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the signs, just in case one begins to sneak up on you in the future.

Ok, I actually want to talk about this for a moment.
Jonestown, one of the most infamous cults in history, with a mass suicide / mass murder that left more than 900 people dead of cyanide poisoning, hundreds of whom were children… was a leftist political cult. That fact is an unambiguous and completely undebatable matter of historical record.
This isn’t a footnote in the story of Jonestown, and it isn’t a weird anti-leftist gotcha either. Jonestown attracted people to their cause with anti-segregation and anti-poverty activist work, and they did actual, meaningful good for those causes. The People’s Temple was a leftist org, unambiguously. They created mutual aid networks for food aid, and rent assistance, and job placement services, and clothing donations, and winter heating. They leaned heavily on the Indianapolis Human Rights Commission in order to push desegregation, and led sit-ins and boycotts and protests. They participated in significant voter registration efforts. They led the fight against the eviction of tenants from San Francisco’s International Hotel.
People joined The People’s Temple because it was a good thing when they joined it. They didn’t start out as brainwashed cultists, and they didn’t gravitate towards the leadership of Jim Jones out of masochism, or inherent submissiveness, or a perverse love of creeping authoritarianism. They fell in line under Jim Jones because he’d built a community that was genuinely helping people, and was advancing a political cause that seemed worth fighting. They followed Jim Jones because he earned their trust.
Jim Jones then used the trust and the social capital that he had gained from all of the above in order to elevate himself to the status of a messianic figure, and abuse and profit off of his followers. Slowly but surely, he boiled the frog. It was all good – and then it was mostly good – and then, well there was some abuse, but it wasn’t that bad, and it wasn’t really his fault – and then there was a lot of abuse, but the outside world would destroy them if given the chance, so wasn’t it the lesser of the two evils? And then, eventually, it got so bad that hundreds of people poisoned themselves and their children at his command, and murdered everyone in the compound who refused and resisted.
Your cause of choice is not immune from abusers taking advantage of it!
It doesn’t matter if you’re right. It doesn’t matter if your cause is just. It does not matter if your good thing really is a good thing, because there is always the possibility that it will one day be co-opted by a monster. And if the fact that it started good is enough for you to ignore that gradual, subtle change, you could end up in a truly horrible situation.
One of my best friends in undergrad got sucked into a cult. Years later, we talked about it, and he told me something that I’ll never forget which is, it’s only when you look all the way back at things that they seem crazy. You start off with things that are totally normal and innocuous: “we’re stronger together”; “oppression is bad”; “you can accomplish more if you believe in yourself”; “empathy is important and we should all try to bring more of it into our lives”; etc. Then, you move to something that’s just a little step away from that. And then again. And then again. And then again. But it never feels like a big jump, because it’s not! A -> Z is crazy, but A -> B wasn’t, and B -> C wasn’t, and C -> D wasn’t, and…
This friend was smart, and rational, and independent, and normal, and by the time he and his wife left, they’d gone from just thinking that we should all practice more emotional mindfulness, to being terrified that leaving the cult and the cult leader would literally kill them, via the cult leader having magical powers.
If your only analysis is “Where I started was good, and no single step since then has been crazy” that is utterly insufficient to keep you safe.
“This can’t possibly be a cult, because when I joined it was a leftist political org and there’s never been a single instance where it suddenly changed” is literally the exact logic that kept people in Jonestown until it was too late.
One thing I really like about Beverly Engel’s book It Wasn’t Your Fault, which is about PTSD-induced toxic shame, is that quite a bit of it deals with people who haven’t broken The Cycle of Abuse ™ and have gone on to hurt others. That’s a really underserved and vulnerable patient population, and statistically, it’s also MASSIVE. I don’t think I’ve read a single other self-help type book on PTSD and self-loathing that confronts the possibility that you’re exactly as bad as you think you are.
I felt better that it so much as mentioned that children can react to abuse with ungovernable rage. Everybody likes the image of PTSD patients as internalizing everything and becoming doormats, which does happen, and often, but it’s not the only narrative. Personally I’ve always hated my abusers and have always wanted everyone who so much as breathed wrong in my direction from ages 0 to 18 to burn eternally in hell. I *never* thought any of it was my fault and ever since I was a toddler I was willing to make it everybody else’s problem, and it’s really relieving to read a clinical perspective that acknowledges that abuse victims can act that way too.
It’s wild to me that its such a neglected subset of abuse victims. Its really common. When I still lived with my parents and was still subjected to my father every fucking day I would lash out terribly at my mother, to the point when i went to visit them for years afterwards she was afraid I would lash out again. We’ve worked it out, I’m a much better person when I’m not regularly subjected to mental and emotional abuse, but like, its just so common.
I think it must be, at least partially, because, people hate the imperfect victim. Its easy for so many people to sympathize with someone who never lashed out. Less so for people to sympathize with people who are angry and lash out. Even though its a perfectly sensible reaction to being hurt over and over. I’m sure most people would like to think they would simply never.
I don’t think this is the whole reason, but, I think it plays into it.
Similarly, there’s a narrative of, you cannot experience grief over having fucked up. That if you are hurting because you caused harm, because you were the cause of harm, that you’re not allowed to grieve, because you “earned your sorrow. You deserve to bottle it up and to hurt for the bad things you have done,”
Which is punitive logic. It’s copthink. Which is bad.

In fact, you can actually give yourself trauma over fucking up too badly and doing, witnessing, or failing to prevent something evil that goes against your morals; for instance, if you steal your mother’s life savings due to drug addiction, kill a civilian during a military operation (please do not join the military), or became abusive because you didn’t have the tools and skills yet to handle BPD. In the field of psychology this is called “moral injury” or “perpetrator trauma.”

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’ve technically gotten other trailers for <em>Avengers: Doomsday,</em> but the upcoming <a href="https://reactormag.com/avengers-doomsday-trailer-cast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">film’s latest preview</a> is our only proper look at the biggest MCU release of the year. It’s actually somewhat surprising that Marvel released the trailer ahead of their SDCC 2026 panel, though you’ve got to imagine that they’ve got even bigger things planned for that show. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nevertheless, the recent <em>Doomsday</em> trailer has predictably been dissected by eagle-eyed analysts who couldn’t help but notice there are quite a few things the preview doesn’t show us. Namely, it’s strangely missing a few of the names that were once prominently featured in that <a href="https://reactormag.com/marvel-is-announcing-the-cast-of-avengers-doomsday-in-the-most-annoying-way-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">now-infamous director’s chair livestream event</a> that slowly (very slowly) revealed the biggest members of the <em>Doomsday </em>cast. Now, we can only really guess as to whether the absence of those confirmed names was an oversight or a deliberate attempt to hide some aspect of the film that Marvel simply isn’t ready to share yet. In a couple of cases, that could be the long-awaited appearances of the characters themselves. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a bonus, I’m also including a few of the more notable Marvel names that have been associated with <em>Doomsday</em> at some point but have never actually been confirmed to appear in the movie and do not appear in the new trailer. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kelsey Grammer was actually one of the first legacy <em>X-Men</em> actors who was confirmed to appear in <em>Doomsday</em>, and he was of course name-dropped during the aforementioned cast chair announcement video. Yet, he’s nowhere to be found in the first <em>Doomsday</em> trailer or any of the <em>Doomsday</em> teasers released so far. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grammer did previously appear as Beast in <em>The Marvels</em>, so it’s not like we haven’t seen him in the MCU before. Still, his absence suggests a desire to either focus on the absolute biggest names in <em>Doomsday</em> or the possibility that his scenes in the movie are limited/heavy on spoilers. The same could seemingly be said of many currently missing X-Men characters. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First off, it’s very rude to tell us that Alan Cumming will once again play Nightcrawler and then refuse to show us the character in any of the marketing material. The real traitors are at Marvel Studios. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Much like Kelsey Grammer, it feels like we can most likely attribute Cumming’s absence to a smaller role, a spoiler-heavy role, or, perhaps, the nightmare of trying to find the time to fit every character into the preview for a movie that features every character. Still, at least we know we’ll get to see Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler again (eventually). </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sentry (Lewis Pullman)</strong></h4>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was a bit surprising to see Lewis Pullman featured in that infamous casting chair reveal given that <em>Thunderbolts*</em> hadn’t been released at the time and the nature of Pullman’s character was being kept under wraps leading up to that movie’s debut. We know Pullman reprises his role as Sentry in the movie, though the character was notably absent from the first <em>Doomsday</em> trailer. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To be fair, though, the Thunderbolts crew doesn’t recieve a lot of screen time in this trailer, in general. Pullman also previously noted that he’s aware that a lot of the characters in the movie “resume their journeys” in unexpected ways, so this is another case where the character’s absence could indeed be a deliberate attempt to hide something that would be hard to feature in the trailer without giving too much away.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rumored <em>Avengers: Doomsday </em>Characters Not in The Trailer</strong></h2>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While none of these characters are officially set to appear in <em>Doomsday</em>, they have all been associated with the film at some point in various ways. Since they’re not featured in the latest preview, though, here’s what we know and suspect about their status. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)</strong></h4>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is maybe the most intriguing missing name from both the <em>Doomsday</em> trailer and the movie’s confirmed cast so far. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s been 4 years since we last saw Doctor Strange in <em>Multiverse of Madness</em>, and that film’s ending (in which the Doctor learns he has caused an incursion between universes) seemingly hinted that it would feed into the multiverse shenanigans <em>Doomsday</em> intends to provide. And yet, the only thing we’ve been left to go on is Benedict Cumberbatch’s cheeky suggestion that the reason he wasn’t featured in the movie’s cast reveal video is that they <a href="https://thedirect.com/article/doctor-strange-excluded-avengers-doomsday-event" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">didn’t have enough chairs</a>. If Doctor Strange does appear in the movie, it will apparently be in a secret (and likely important) cameo role.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Spider-Man (Tom Holland)</strong></h4>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another oddity, Tom Holland has never been officially confirmed to appear in <em>Doomsday </em>despite all evidence that would lead you to assume he must be. After all, it’s a bit difficult to imagine<em> Doomsday </em>without arguably the MCU’s most popular remaining legacy character, especially with<em> Brand New Day </em>out later this month. </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As it stands, though, Tom Holland is not confirmed to appear in the upcoming film. While the character will almost certainly appear in <em>Avengers: Secret Wars</em>, it’s possible that his appearance in that sequel will be set-up in<em> Brand New Day</em> rather than <em>Doomsday</em>. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Deadpool and Wolverine (Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman)</strong></h4>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deadpool and Wolverine are two of the more intriguing missing characters from the <em>Doomsday</em> trailer. The trades went back and forth <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/09/deadpool-ryan-reynolds-avengers-doomsday-1236509644/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">over a rumor </a>that Reynolds will appear as Deadpool in<em> Doomsday</em> in some capacity, and many assumed that Jackman will appear as Wolverine given how heavily the movie is leaning into the legacy X-Men of it all. Yet, these two remain MIA.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For what it’s worth, a series of rumors strongly suggest that if these two are going to be in the movie, it will be in a very limited capacity. So keep your expectations low but feel free to keep them all the same.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) </strong></h4>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Given that <em>Doomsday</em> is clearly trying as hard as it can to bring back the original Avengers (it will, against all odds, feature Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans), the absence of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is a curious omission. After all, Banner is not only still active in the MCU but has a supporting role in <em>Spider-Man: Brand New Day</em>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ruffalo previously suggested that he will not appear in Doomsday while reports indicate that he could still make an appearance in next year’s <em>Secret Wars</em>. While it’s hard to rule out surprise cameos in the MCU these days, it does seem like Brand New Day is meant to be the next big chapter in Bruce Banner’s story.[end-mark]</p>

getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled “hey stupid! the bus is that way!” very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went “this bitch thinks she’s on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom.”
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust I’ve ever seen in anyone’s eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going “why is Boston like this”: a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don’t need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
