Two Guardian flashfics: interviews with Zhao Xinci
Jul. 21st, 2026 12:42 pmTitle: Surface Tension (1540 words) by china_shop [General Audiences]
Characters: Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father, Zhang Shi, Chu Shuzhi
Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Secret Identity, Anti-Dixing Bigotry, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:
In Zhao Xinci’s day, he’d never have countenanced one of Them on his team. When races mingled, discord and divided loyalties were inevitable. But of course Yunlan thought he knew better, was apparently willing to bet Haixing’s security on the strength of the Dixing Envoy’s judgement and so set in place the perfect conditions for his own downfall. Zhao Xinci’s hand clenched on his tea mug, unthinkingly borrowing some of his stowaway’s strength.
Careful, murmured Zhang Shi, you’ll break it and give us away.
Title: Cold Blood, Hot heart (1238 words) by china_shop [General Audiences]
Characters: Zhu Hong, Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father
Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Zhu Hong’s crush on Zhao Yunlan, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:
Zhu Hong was not a shrinking violet. The only way she knew to cope with conflict was to barge into it. So she knocked and entered without waiting for an invitation, all fired up to give Zhao Yunlan’s father a piece of her mind.

Jul. 21st, 2026 08:44 amI know we all like to blame lotus boob as the Patient Zero of the trypophobia explosion but after seeing a kid in a specific t-shirt the other day, you will never not convince me the actual culprit is Spongebob fucking Squarepants.
Chat corner with (or without) music
Jul. 20th, 2026 09:00 pmHi,
weekly chat corner, this is. Talk about Star Wars, here, you should.
(I can't believe it took me literal years to write Yoda Speak in one of these posts! 😆)
~ ~ ~
Somewhat random: do you remember ever seeing a protagonist play a musical instrument in a Star Wars story? I don't. Maybe in some of the many many EU media I haven't read... Rogue Squadron would be a series where I'd expect it, actually - some scene showing the pilots' free time activities, perhaps.
It's interesting, what makes it into big canons like SW, and what doesn't.

World Wide Slash 2026!
Jul. 19th, 2026 09:33 pmThe Vidshow was really fun and I think my vids went over well! There was a nice comment about my song choices (I wish I had a good technique on finding songs - my process tend to involve a lot of staring at my iTunes library and listening to my iPod on shuffle in hopes of finding something that fits, asking people for suggestions, and a bunch of metaphorical flailing around).
Vid Review was neat and I really liked Kandy Fong's panel about early fanvids! It was so cool to see a bunch of older vids and It was especially neat to see one of Judith Chien's early ones!
(As a side note, the mention of Katharine Scarritt made me think of her Susan/Talia vid Ice and made me want to try and track down more info about VCR era f/f vids. From what I've read, apparently the Xena fandom was making them, but most(all?) of the non digital ones have been lost to time and there wasn't a ton of fannish crossover with other live action media fandoms/conventions at the time.)
There was a bunch of panels I didn't make it to that I'm going to check out the recordings/notes of!
Interchangeable cogs.
Jul. 20th, 2026 08:09 amBut the buried lede of the Industrial Revolution comparison is that the revolution didn’t simply exchange some jobs for others. It developed a new capitalist system of labor de-skilling. De-skilling extracts the knowledge of design, craft, and mastery from high-skill workers and replaces those craftsperson type roles with new types of less-skilled and more-specialized roles. Those increasingly specific roles, in increasingly complex systems, meant that the average level of wide conceptual understanding of each worker was reduced, resulting in concentrated power of the managerial class.
As the average skill level of a worker goes down, the easier it becomes for capitalists to control a labor force. If a worker can be easily replaced, there is no justification to pay that worker high wages, or ultimately to keep that worker employed.
On the .
The capitalist class did this first with trades- and craftspeople in the Industrial Revolution, but they’ve been trying harder than you can possibly imagine to come for white collar and creative workers, too, as anyone who’s ever worked in (or, worse, owned) any kind of consulting firm can absolutely assure you (and from both ends of the stick, at that).

Heartstopper Forever
Jul. 19th, 2026 05:32 pmApart from that, it was good, of course. Alice Oseman is a great writer. I especially liked Elle's scene about the current state of trans rights in the UK.
