In my long hiatus away from lj (while I was on tumblr), I think I finally broke myself of needing to come back to lj. It doesn't hurt that they've been monkeying around with stuff again and since I no longer feel that unwavering loyalty to them and more people have been making the jump, I think I may finally be ready. I'll still crosspost and still get notifications for both and I'll be fine commenting here or there, but. I think I'm going to give dreamwidth a real try.

Other things I have been up to: Did you know that I totally forgot about Yuletide this year, until the 28th and then went, oh, well, at least that's three less days I have to wait through before I can read anything. orz

I've been playing Glitch again as well. I wish I'd kept up with learning my skills in the month and a half I took off, but, ah, well, this will give me something to still do. I'm glad to see there are new quests to do, but I do wish the world had been expanded a bit more while I was gone, I'd like to see this game have a bit more to actually do.

Oh, and I started watching Parks and Rec for serious this time. It's going much better. (I may have skipped to season three and this actually seems to be a pretty good idea as I am enjoying it immensely now!)

I've also watched the first five episodes of Homeland now and I think I really like it. I'm not particularly attached to any particular character, nor do I think it's necessarily brilliant, but something about it just really works for me. I find it to be a sort of spiritual successor to 24, right down to the ways that show was both good and bad. If nothing else, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis are both excellent in it.

Sigh. So, I have a new tumblr. Well. Two new tumblrs. Yeah, sorry. I've been keeping up with girlsbydaylight, but now there are two more, both of which are only meant to be semi-active. (....in comparison with girlsbydaylight, obviously.)

So, nerdery ahoy over here. And, yes, the name is dorky as all get out. I don't care. :D Right now it's half-fanart, half-nerdery (mostly about the Magnus family, because I have my priorities), which is probably how it'll continue.

More movies I've been watching:
X-Men: First Class: I talked about this on tumblr previously, actually, but I'm gonna talk about it even more. (Despite that I still haven't gotten more than halfway through it. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to feel the same during the second half of the movie, too.)

The night I watched the first half, I tried to get some sleep, but I couldn't because I had a thought in my head that legit had me in such a giggle fit at my own joke, that I had to get up out of bed and go share it with tumblr. "Man," I thought to myself, about this X-Men:FC movie I just watched, "instead of First Class, they should have called this movie X-Men: Fuck Continuity."

Hi, lj. It's been awhile! Sorry, tumblr got me and got me really good. I've spent most of my talking time over there. But, you know, I miss you, lj. I actually want to hang out with the people I know from lj! So I'm going to try to post to you more often! One of my New Year's resolutions is going to be to stop being such a hermit with everyone and, therefore, I WILL TRY OKAY. I'll try to, like, do a 30 day challenge just to get myself posting again or something.

So, what have I been up to? Well, Christmas was fun and I received a 3DS, so it looks like I'll be playing KH3 whenever the hell it finally comes out! I also received Legend of Zelda: Occarina of Time for the 3ds, which I am hoping will not make me barfy on this system!

I have also been playing 9 persons, 9 hours, 9 doors or whatever the order of that one is because Noel got it for me for Christmas and as;ldfkjalkj holy shit that is a lot of talking but... puzzles!!! I love it already.

I am trying to play The Last Remnant on the Xbox, but fuuuuck it keeps saying all my discs are unreadable and I have been sick over the holidays, so I haven't felt up to monkeying with it until recently. (Just a cold this time, unlike the time before where I got the flu for 12 hours and was vomiting up everything I'd ever eaten since the third grade.)

ALSO, I HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE MOVIES. 4 of them in the past week! Brief reactions without spoilers!

The Adventures of Tintin: This was very cute. It was very well-made and I genuinely enjoyed it! But I did sort of feel like it was just too European to really 100% be one of those things that I wanted to see more more more more of. The animation was lovely, the plot was really decent, but I could have used more ladies in the movie. It was very... Dickensian, I guess is the best word I can come up with. Which isn't bad, certainly I enjoy the style, and I was surprised that this wasn't completely without edge, but it definitely felt like it went for complicated plots and dazzling scenes over characters that I felt invested in.

We Bought a Zoo: Look, I know, okay. But Elle Fanning is seriously the most adorable thing ever and I find Matt Damon very easy on the eyes. It was better than I expected, given that RottenTomatoes gave it a pretty low score, but it's... well, it's pretty much exactly what you expect out of this kind of family movie. If you're in an emotional place, it'll probably make you cry a little. And, hey, I'm a sucker for dads and their baby kids, shut up. The script itself is pretty aggressively mediocre, but the really polished performers save it, I think.

Arthur Christmas: I hadn't really even heard much about this one, so thank god RottenTomatoes gave it such a high score, because this one was all kinds of fantastic. It was hilarious, it was heart-warming, and it was even genuinely clever in a lot of spots. The animation wasn't necessarily revolutionary, but it fit the story well and was quite lovely and I just enjoyed every second I was watching this one. I read a review that said, "Arthur might not be perfect, but he cares. The same could be said of this movie." and I found that to be a good summation of it.

The Muppets: I think, of all the movies I've seen, Arthur Christmas is still my favorite, but The Muppets definitely came a close second. The way it balances all the things it's trying to be (nostalgic, yet updated! whimsical puppets versus real actors!) is really sort of masterful and this is a movie that definitely gave me characters to care about. I felt invested in the relationships between everyone, I was delighted that they actually addressed the Kermit/Miss Piggy relationship, and, oh, the humor was excellent. The breaking of the 4th wall in the casual little comments was absolutely perfect! It was sharp, witty, and an absolutely delightful way to spend a couple of hours yesterday.

So, thanks to Meg, I'm on Glitch and just sort of poking about and having fun. It's so pretty! And I only have to play in short bursts of time! And it's so soothing and cute and fun!

I read the Alpha Flight (2011) #1-4 despite that I'm not the biggest fan of theirs, but. You know. Aurora and Northstar. I'm weak to Marvel twins. I went in with a lot of trepidation because this is Pak, who wrote Endsong. Which made me want to punch him in the face a lot. (I kind of really, really hated Endsong.) But I was trying to keep an open mind here! There'll SPOILERS of course.

I don't care what anyone says, Suburgatory is still my new favorite show! I absolutely love that it isn't trying to be all grimdark or depressing, because my life is full of enough of that as it is and I have enough grimdark shows to watch already. I want something light-hearted that I don't have to worry about the state of the characters' emotional well-being, especially when it involves teenagers. Instead, it's just bright, colorful fun.

And also a moment where I, honest to god, had to pause the episode because I was IRL LOLing for a full minute straight, no exaggeration.

So, I watched this set of commercials (which I basically understood raw, but was pleased to see subs for!) and then I totally had to cap them because oh. my. lord. First off, Aiba and Jun living together in the Hitachi cm! And then a series of Hot Pepper Beauty ads with Jun commenting on a girl getting her hairstyle changed and half of them were pretty cute and romantic. The other half were MEAN AS HELL.

I was pretty much crying by the end of it.

And, yes. Yes, I did have to screencap all of these. There's a bunch of caps, but they're all thumbnailed, so it shouldn't be too bad for loading!

I read most of the new DC reboot (aside from the ones that are coming out this week) that I was interested in, trying to keep an open mind and give them a fair shot. I've been about a year or two behind for awhile now, so I figured this would be a good experiment, to jump into the reboot to see just how returning-reader-friendly they really were. Honestly, out of the dozen issues or so that I read, there was only one I was even vaguely excited about. Most of the issues weren't terrible, but neither were they particularly interesting and having to do set-up issues only explains so much, especially when those set-up issues should be exciting and have lots of shit happening.

I have a bit of an odd question--does anyone have any recurring stress dreams? Any themes that usually pop up? I get the teeth falling out thing and it always kind of freaks me out a little. I also think this is a sucky coping method, brain. So, I'm already dealing with a lot of stress and you think it's a good idea to give me dreams that terrify and stress the crap out of me on top of everything else? Boo. Boo.

I skipped yesterday, so I'll do two days here today instead. And then talk probably a lot about the latest Adventure Time.

♥ ♥ ♥ → Sometimes I am reminded of how I have weird sayings. I've been using, "Go cry on your mountain of porn!" a lot again lately, which is something I started saying back in... mmm, I believe the KHR fandom, because the Dino/Hibari shippers were really kind of everywhere and, every so often, someone would be like UGH THIS PAIRING SUCKS WHY IS IT SO POPULAR IT IS EVERYWHERE I HATE IT IT'S SO OOC GROSS and I would think, ugh, why are you being a jerk? And then I would think, you know. I literally have about twenty NC-17 D18 doujinshi I just downloaded, so your hate does not bother me! I shall just go cry on my mountain of porn that you don't love my ship! How terrible it is to be a fan of a popular ship!! in order to not be a jerk. Because I get that popular pairings can be pretty ubiquitous and that's frustrating to people who don't like it.

And one of my great feelings on fandom is: If you have the lion's share of fanart/fic in a fandom? Suck it up when people express their frustration and dislike for it. Yes, they're being jerks about it often times. Yes, it seems unfair that they can rant about it, but you can't. But you have the overwhelmingly popular ship. You have a hundred things to read or look at right at your fingertips! Be the bigger person, okay.

This was a hard lesson for me to learn, but I suppose that's one thing the Prince of Tennis fandom did for me. Jesus, people were jerks about the TezuFuji pairing.

Anyway, that's what I meant when I first said that and that's still what I mean today. I really wish Bleach fandom, too, would follow this philosophy. I know a lot of shippers hate the IchiHime pairing, but you guys have mountains of porn to read. Try being a little nicer next time, okay.

♥ ♥ ♥ → I haven't talked much about FARMVILLE lately, but it's one of the things that's kept me busy lately. Prepare for picspam?

- One of the big new things is the Lighthouse Cove. Mostly, I am in favor! I love having a new farm to play with, I love having three farms to take care of (my ideal would be five!), and I actually don't mind that they're limiting the amount of crops you can have, forcing you into doing more with decorations. I'm past the point of doing much with crops anyway, I'm just here for the other stuff! It will make it harder to do the recipes, because you'll get fewer bushels, but most of what you need will probably be available from neighbors anyway, since it's a limited amount of crops.
- I am giving the harvestable cove the side-eye, though. The first couple of days, I worked like mad to upgrade it, so I'm on the last level now and... honestly, that was A LOT of building parts. You start with three of each type of building material. Then 5. (Or did it skip straight to 10?) Then 10. Then 15. Then 20. Then 25. Then 30. ON AND ON AND ON, until we get to 60 OF EACH PIECE. That's so many and it kind of burnt me out on Farmville a little there for awhile.
- Other things that burn me out: The eternal search for animal feed, jesus. I worked really hard to get some rare babies going and Sherry has been helping me tons, but on any given day, I usually have about five of them to grow. They each take 30 feed. That's 150 pieces of feed I need. Nevermind that some days I have eight or nine to grow. That gets to be upwards of 300 pieces of feed. PER DAY. I can't even think about doing common babies because I just can't spare any feed! Zynga needs to either make it easier to get feed (maybe let you post feed every five pieces you feed your baby animals instead of only at the halfway point?) or take it down to 20 pieces of feed to grow the rare babies.
- I am a little tired of the pens. I liked the wildlife pen. I'm really enthused with the zoo pen. I like the pet runs. I am very apathetic on the livestock pen, despite that I had a couple of hot pink pigs in storage, so I could immediately do rare babies. I would be more interested if there was a chance at exclusive animals from mystery babies because there is a shitload of them that I want from this list, both common and rare!
- What I really wish Zynga would do as well is make the adoptable babies have a system exactly like the trees--let your neighbors adopt one of the babies you get like you can with a tree! That would make things a lot more worthwhile! And (at least according to this list) a lot of the rare animals are not adoptable, including the fairy deer that I wanted so badly, which is a lot of my reason for going for the wildlife babies!

► FARMVILLE:
→ I am sad that Farmville's birthday celebration is over, because I really enjoyed the themes coming back for a day, because I grabbed a whole bunch of decorations that I might have otherwise missed. I may have spent a crapload of coins, but I have so many cute buildings now!
→ I also looooooved the Father's Day weekend special where the ram's/boar's pattern was passed on 100% of the time and it really helped me get going on some of the patterns. Thanks to Sherry, I got a leopard print ram, which I immediately proceeded to breed the hell out of, and I even managed to get color-changing spots! (Which made me laugh, because apparently a sheep CAN change a leopard's spots. XDDD) And I even had a bit of luck with getting some different colored candy cane stripes! Still no yellow-and-black candy cane sheep, which I want because IT WILL LOOK LIKE A BUMBLEBEE, IT'LL BE SO AWESOME. In the meantime, some of my cute new sheep: ( Farmville nerdery again!Collapse )

► COMICS:
→ So, I've been reading RevolutionSF again and there are some reactions to the DC reboot, most of which were pretty cynical, for a variety of reasons. I especially agree that DC will get a brief sales bump, but then it'll fall fast, because it's not actually forward-looking at all. But what I really agree with is one of the last comments about how a better model for distribution would be inexpensive monthly digital releases, then trades/print versions for the entire story once its done. But that would mean real change and like DC is going to do that.
→ This secret on a recent fs post kind of bugs me. The gist is how it's silly of comic fans to complain about X-Men: First Class not being like the comics when Age of Apocalypse, House of M, Generation Hope, etc. are in the comics. "Storyline reboots are pretty much canon." .....what? *stares* Those aren't reboots. The events previous to those events ARE STILL CANON, TOO. Just that the status quo changed, not that everything previous to it was wiped away. All those mutants before House of M? THEY STILL EXISTED. All the struggles they went through because of Decimation? THAT STILL HAPPENED. *throws up hands* I think this bothers me because this isn't the first time I've seen people call those storylines reboots and it's starting to annoy me.

→ I'm a little wary about the FFXIII-2 news, with the new character focus not sounding particularly great. Though, I am excited to hear about Serah at least! The gameplay stuff is good news, though--I didn't have a problem with the fights in the first game, but I'm never opposed to an easy mode being put in. Mostly, however, I'm glad to hear Toriyama confirm that there'll be more focus on towns will have a larger role, because I really do think that was one of the biggest things that kept the previous game from being great.
→ Also in FFXIII-2 news, apparently there's going to be multiple endings? I... I don't know how I feel about that.

► FARMVILLE:
→ Black sheep with rainbow stars, FUCK YEAH IT'S MINE NOW. Also, Sherry got me a candy cane striped sheep and a color-changing pig, so I am all WHEEEEE--!! about Farmville right now.
→ I have three of the pretty blue snow cone trees now, which also makes me happy! I haven't gotten the giant ice cream tree yet, but the colors on that one are kind of blah so I don't care as much. Pretty blue snow cone tree! There are so few trees in Farmville that are blue (and it pained me not to get one of the blue chrome apple trees, but I am not spending FV$ on a tree) that I'm really delighted by this one. I'd seen it on the wiki for ages and envied it, but now it's mineeeeeee. I am sad about not being able to get a cotton candy tree, though. They look so cute!
→ I've been browsing the forums again. Holy crap, this island-themed farm is gorgeous and it even manages to work in all the buildings! I see the Craftshop, the Garage, the Horse Stable, the Greenhouse, the Sheep Pen, the Winery, two Cow Barns, a Bakery, and even a Turkey Coop. And yet it all looks really natural! Granted, there are no crops there, but it's such a gorgeous farm omg.

► MANGA:
→ I really probably should just start categorizing this as "SAILOR MOON" stuff instead of still sticking it in the manga section. Whatever, good enough! It's been nearly two weeks since I sat down to write some of this stuff out, so I'm actually through the Black Moon arc and well into Infinity, which I'm enjoying, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Black Moon arc in the manga. I like the anime more and more as time goes on, but I do think they made a lot of missteps in that arc--and the filler really didn't help.

→ I'm also about 20 minutes into Another Story (watching it, rather than doing it myself, because I am laaaazy and I just want the story) but already it is the greatest thing ever. I was sort of wary of it, these tie-in things (especially ones that are as old as this one) are often not that great, even if fandom seemed to love it and it's not like the art is anything to write home about.

I was initially hesitant as well because I couldn't tell who was saying what during the prologue, since there were no on-screen character faces to help me out. But then things switched back to the present day and it got easier to follow and then, well.

→ Oh, my goooooood. This farm is amazing. I could never do it myself, I have too much crap I need to keep out on the farm, but I still look at this with stars in my eyes. And seething envy. Lots and lots of seething envy.
→ This forest/platform/river design is why I keep giving consideration to trying the blue hay bales trick. Sometimes it looks so awesome!
→ I've seen the tunnels done before, but it never gets old, that is one gorgeous farm. I envy it so much, but... there's no sheep pen, no pig pen, no pub, etc. So it's not really a workable farm at all. But still. Envyyyyy.


► COMICS:
→ Sighhhh, I really need more comic friends because I need to shaaaaare my thoughts! And read other people's thoughts! Not just comic reviews! Even if there are a gajillion of them! You guyssss, Marvel's been kind of good again lately~~!
→ This post came across my dash the other day, which is a sort of primer post about how to get into the various Bat-mythos and I appreciate it very much! But I sort of look at that list and think that there's no way those comics would have hooked me in. They're probably good for explaining the background of Bruce's character, but, honestly, Bruce is boring by himself! And then I realized, yeah, this is why there are no good primers because everyone disagrees on everything when it comes to where a person should start reading.

And then I said to Siobhan, "Personally, I think vol 3 of JLA is a much better starting place for people to get into DC. ....shit, now I want to reread JLA to see if it really does hold up."

THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS. I ALWAYS END UP DOING THIS TO MYSELF.

It's not enough that I decided, oh, I checked out during Morrison's run on New X-Men (and have never been a regular reader since) because I hated it even at the time, but I want to be fair to it. Instead of reading it every month like I did back then, I'll read it all in a rush at once! Maybe it'll be more tolerable that way!

IT'S KIND OF REALLY NOT. IT'S STILL JUST AS ENRAGING AS EVER.

But I want to be fair to it! When I bitch about it, I want to be fully, 100% informed. This is why I'm rereading Austen's run on Uncanny again as well. Because, dammit, if I'm going to bitch about him being the second most enraging X-author ever (wait, or is it third? I can never tell how I feel about Joss on the X-Men), I should actually read it! Even if Lorna does make a wedding dress out of forks. The problem, of course, is that I actually know more about Alex and Lorna now (which I didn't back when those issues were first coming out), so it'll probably be doubly enraging.

However, I am reading PAD's run on the original X-Force and a;slkdjfaljk I know he's lost the magic these days and his wank is on display for everyone to see, but he really was excellent back then! PIETRO AND LORNA. ON THE SAME TEEEEAAAMMMM. I need it, okay! Especially since Morrison did that issue where the X-Men went to find Lorna on Genosha after the bombing and Pietro came along and there was ZERO INTERACTION THERE. Fuck you, Morrison.

→ 1001 Nights... I don't even remember how I picked it up. Probably browsing on MT or something? I only meant to start it a little, then wound up inhaling all 11 volumes over a 36 hour period. I just could not put it down! I can see how other people might have criticism with the manga, especially since it's basically a BL version of Scheherazade (turning the character into a pretty bishounen type), but... it's BL manhwa. You kind of have to expect certain things going in? But the art is SO PRETTY OMG.

→ So I've been reading comics again, right? (Though, seriously, internet. You're not making me go back to Thor. I've been there and done that, I am stronger than you.) And mostly I'm reading UXM (517-520 or so) and Nation X and a little Legacy in there, but I decided to go a little out of order to read the backup in UXM 526 because I couldn't stand waiting any longer. And, oh, jesus christ, Heinberg, if you rip my heart out at the end of all of this (in a bad way) I swear to christ I am flipping a fucking table and giving up on Marvel all together. Because I cannot take how many fucking ~*feelings*~ I am having over this.

→ So, I was reading Monster High wank when looking for some entertainment and, like it usually is of late, f_w itself isn't very funny, but following the links lead me to the sf_drama post about it and a;lskdfjalks oh my god that was... that was actually kind of fun! I... I had forgotten what it was like when people were actually funny in their pointing and laughing sometimes!

► FARMVILLE:
→ I see that they're temporarily taking the chameleon ewe off the market and I'm really hoping (right along with everyone else) that they're doing so to work on having it actuall work right so that it'll inherit the pattern, because I don't think ANYONE has gotten it to work. I'm willing to wait and be patient, but I do wish Zynga were a little more clear about it and about if the previously bought ones will be grandfathered in. (They'd better be working when things get sorted out, seriously. Though, I'm actually okay with a potentially low rate of success on passing on the pattern--if it's too easy, Zynga would make no money off it. But I would like it to be possible, because I want a whole farm of them and I'm not spending $20FV or $30FV a pop. There has to be a balance in there somewhere.)
→ The list of prizes for the collections is out and the rainbow and flowery cows are on there! Also the Zesty Pony, too! I don't mind the other prizes, the fruit crates are all right to put out near your EC Pub and I like decorative trees when they're pretty, but! Cowssssss. And, who, holy crap, the grains collection is a water mill? I... I really want that one, too.... *__* (The pig pumpkin is cute, too! Hopefully it'll be a breedable orange pig?)
→ I see a lot of people sad that they won't be able to get fuel from it anymore, to which I say a hearty FEH! to anyway. You only got, what, five cans of fuel? That would be gone in an instant practically. I'd much rather have exclusive items like these. (P.S. Zynga totally gave you warning if you were paying attention, to be able to trade in your collections for fuel. Bleh, you guys. Bleh. I should know better than to read the comments.)
→ Oh, jesus fuck, there's another new tree and I still haven't even gotten the old ones! I mean, on the bright side, I've gotten a couple more wedding trees and royal crystal trees, but I was hoping to spend a couple of days not obsessively snagging seedlings and watering cans from my newsfeed. On the other hand... MAY DAY TREE. IT IS THE TREE OF MY BIRTHDAY. I MUST HAVE ITTTTTT.
→ I am curious about the craftshops coming soon screens, if that'll be a new way to make love potions then? Not that I'm super hyped--I can't get anything but white or black stars on my sheep and the bugs with the color-changers haven't worked out, so I feel like I'm just sort of spinning my wheels right now. You can only stock up on so many potions and bottles, too. :/ On the other hand, I've had great luck with orange sheep, with black stars--I am going to have an AWESOME farm come next Halloween.

► TELEVISION:
→ So, I caught up on Glee finally. And, holy mother of fuuuuuuuuck, I'm right back where I started! I was so close to being done! I was almost free! And, christ, now I'm right back to obsessive mode and immediately opened, like, thirty tabs of Kurtofsky fic because I neeeeed it. Ugh, I wish I was kidding.

→ I've been reading some of the issues of Uncanny X-Men that I missed out on between my last reading (I stopped at 507) and picking it up with Nation X (515-522) and I have a few comments about the storylines themselves, but mostly I kind of want to talk about Greg Land's art. I... do not generally agree with the majority of the internet, which I feel rather strongly is kind of a bandwagon thing that people like to hop onto, but I also have a lot of my own issues with the art style. Here's the crux of the issue for me: I don't think he can hack it as a monthly artist. I honestly think that's the root of the majority of the problems with his style.

→ I've been meaning to for well over a month, but it's only recently that I finally sat down to read Dengeki Daisy and I pretty much instantly fell in love with it! I've spammed tumblr with some of my favorite scenes from volume 1 (aka, WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS MANGA), but I am finally getting to a proper blogging of it. It's so hilarious! I can't tell you the number of times I shrieked with laughter! But it's also shoujo to the core, so there's lots of gorgeous hugging and licking fingers and fingers tangling in the other's hair and ~*feelings*~ all over the place!

SPOILERS up through volume 3 at least, but probably partway into volume 4, too.
