Biochar is what’s left after trees are caught in an inferno, what remains of kindling when a bonfire is snuffed. Rich in carbon, biochar stores the nutrients and water that replenish the flora scorched during its production and nurture new forests, crops, and gardens. Biochar is the growth, the potential, the hope that forms after destruction.
Just like our namesake, the Biochar Magazine seeks to foster growth from destruction, and favors the work that demonstrates this growth.
We want to see it in your form and structure—as erasure, use of negative space, anything else you can think of. We want to see it in your subjects and your approaches: in the destruction around you and within you, what opportunities for growth can you observe? What can you create from it? We value unique approaches to universal topics. We want you to uncover the unseen and understated.
You can submit your work for publication in our bimonthly issues, or for our special themed section, Smoke.
General guidelines:
Send us your submissions by email (biocharmagazine@gmail.com), with “Submission – [LAST NAME, FIRST NAME] – [CATEGORY]” as your email’s subject. For example: Submission – Doe, John – Poetry
Attach your files as a PDF or docx.
Make only ONE (1) submission in each category at a given time.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed; please indicate in the body of your email which submissions are simultaneous, and update us if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere.
Previously published work is allowed. If your piece has been previously published, please include credits to the original publisher in your cover letter and verify that you have full rights to republish.
Work that promotes racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of bigotry and discrimination are not allowed.

Shalom Kasim is general editor at Biochar Magazine. Originally from Gombe, Nigeria, Shalom holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Literary Studies from the Federal University, Wukari. Shalom is also the managing editor at Mud Season Review. His writing has been featured in various esteemed publications, including FU Review in Berlin, Germany; Lolwe; Pawners Paper; DoubleSpeak Magazine; The Feeels Magazine, and Eboquills.

Michael Imossan is a poet/writer/researcher/reviewer. Fadairo Tesleem (TPC vi) is a Nigerian poet and a member of The Poetic Collective. He was on the shortlist for 2022’s Spectrum Poetry Contest, Africa Teen Writers’ Award (poetry category) & Abubakar Gimba Prize For Nonfiction.
