Hi, I'm Alanna! Recovering pastry chef-turned gluten-free content creator and award-winning cookbook author.

The Bojon Gourmet is where I’ve shared hundreds of well-tested recipes since 2009. Here you’ll find versions your favorite desserts and sweet treats made (undetectably) gluten-free using flavorful alternative flours. You can peruse recipes from the archives, search for specific ingredients and dietary preferences, and join my community of bakers by subscribing to my free newsletter.

My super-moist Gluten-Free Lemon Almond Flour Olive Oil Cake is one of the most-made recipes on TBG!

With lots of food sensitivities myself and in my family, I know what a drag it can be to find good recipes that fit your dietary requirements. I’ve learned from my (many) gluten-free baking mistakes, testing recipes a dozen or more times so you don’t have to.

I also include options for dairy-free, eggless, paleo, vegan, and refined sugar-free. Because everyone deserves good food!

A classically trained pastry chef with over 20 years of experience in the food industry, I enjoy crafting patisserie-worthy recipes that are simple enough to make at home with a handful of easy-to-find ingredients. With my foolproof tutorials, you’ll feel like a pro flipping crepes, decorating sponge cake, and baking up madeleines in your own kitchen.

My recipes skip the bland store-bought flour blends in favor of flavorful individual gluten-free flours such as oat flour, almond flour, and sweet rice flour.

    What is Bojon?

I started this site in 2009 during a stint of funemployment and borrowed the term "bojon" (no job, backwards) from a friend. One facet of the tao of Bojon involves immersing oneself in the present moment, and I never feel more zen than when I'm creating, photographing, writing about, and (mostly!) eating something delectable. Read more about the Tao of Bojon here.

On the rare occasions when I'm not baking, I can be found hiking “extreme picnicking” with my husband in the California Bay Area, reading romcom novels in the bath, and attempting to snuggle my cats.

Sometimes I get an idea in my head of how I want a recipe to turn out and I won't stop baking until I get it just right! That was the case with these gluten-free snickerdoodles. I wanted a thick cookie with crispy edges, pillow-soft middles, clear cinnamon notes, hefty chew, and sparkly, rumpled tops.

My neighbors, family members, and Jay (who also patiently washed all the dishes) gamely made their way through batch after batch until I finally (finally!) nailed the formula. 😅

And I just got the sweetest comment on them that gave me all the feels:

"These are so goood! I’ve been wanting snickerdoodle for a long while. And these turned out wonderfully! Very soft, but with good integrity. Thank you for your copious notes on substitutions and technique: engaging with your recipes has made me a more competent and confident baker! The flavor was exactly what I craved!"

I use a favorite blend of flours – almond, oat, sweet rice, and tapioca – for an über-flavorful dough. The process of making these is comfort baking at its finest – first stirring together the dough in one bowl, then rolling dough balls in cinnamon sugar, and watching them bake up as they fill the kitchen with their buttery, spicy scent.

The recipe is so easy to make in about 10 minutes of active time with a handful of ingredients that you (maybe?) already have in your pantry, and it keeps beautifully for snacks all week long.

-almond, oat, sweet rice, and tapioca flours
-shredded zucchini

-oil and milk
-eggs
-chocolate chips (optional but recommended!)
-baking powder and soda

I first shared this recipe back in 2011 (!!) It made the rounds on the food blogs and I converted it to be gluten-free using a blend of almond, oat, and sweet rice flours.

The top bakes up into a crunchy blanket of spiced deliciousness that tastes gorgeous against tart, jammy plums. So good.
