[sticky entry] Sticky: sponsorable fic list

chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
I actually have one of these, now! I'm amazed I got this far. Fics available for funding by donation are listed below. I'm borrowing from the ever-marvelous [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith here by listing the name of the person who prompted the story. I've also learned about rate calculations by following her examples and links. For information on the orange!verse, and the Schrodinger's Heroes project that spawned it, see her menu page.

Just for my own sake, if a person donates for one of these fics, could they please send a private message or drop a comment or... something of that sort? I've never done this from the writerly side before, and I have no idea if PayPal will send a message of its own when a donation comes in. Edited to add: It does send a message! I still have no objections to people dropping a line, though. I don't often equate usernames with real names, especially if I don't know you RL.

chanter1944: Commander Seth Goddard of Space Cases fame (SC - Goddard: do the best they can)
That does not, for anyone unfamiliar with the term as it applies to USian media, mean what it looks like it means. That is to say, I was first rudely awakened, and then later jolted out of a doze, by my smoke alarm screaming at me for no apparent reason this morning. That can happen when humidity in a space is especially high; it happened at least once at Newbury Place after taking a hot shower with all the windows closed. A fair amount of what I said the second and third times the stupid thing went off prooooobably shouldn't be repeated on the air at any time outside the safe harbor, unless the swearer wants to get fined by the FCC!

I've since opened all the windows, braced the door on the security chain by sticking a shoe in the gap, and ohthankthelord, air flow! I don't care if it smells like a wildfire in here, there's a breeze! Also the temperature has dropped appreciably. W-H-E-W!

It seems to have *knockity knock knock* done the trick, too, because the smoke alarm hasn't screamed since.

Notes from the weekend in progress, not done yet.

Camping at Lake Kegonsa State Park this time of year means that, when cycling, you may have to brake for sandhill cranes, whitetail fawns jumping fences, or baby bunnies. You may also have to watch your step while hiking trails, so as not to step on legions of fuzzy grey caterpillars. I wonder what they metamorphose into.

Camping this time of year also means you may be awakened at dawn by an exceptionally loud northern house wren. Yeesh, that bird gets the shout from the rafters award! I can't even be too annoyed.

Alas, trailside blackberries aren't quite ripe yet. Give it a week or so.

You know World Cup fever has hit Wisconsin when everyone in a tiny town's Mexican restaurant, including both customers and staff, is watching Spanish-language coverage of the match, complete with chants of "Messi! Messi! Messi!" from a trio of distinctly Anglophone ten-year-olds when Argentina marched onto the pitch. That same tableful went a little cheerfully wild when he assisted Argentina's first goal. Won't say I wasn't hoping Switzerland would pull a rabbit out of their collective hats just for variety's sake... ah well. I'm still a little salty they knocked off Algeria, anyway.

Speaking of the Copa Mundial, the most amusing moment of England vs Norway, as someone who had that match on the radio, came from an American-accented commentator calling an England free kick: "Harry Kaaaaaaaane! and he blasts it in the stands." :) The delivery and the wording together had me giggling. I'm still giggling over it, honestly. Imagine the name rushed out and run together, descending on the last drawn-out syllable, right into the rather amused description. XD Hmm. If someone snagged the ball he blasted into the stands, do they get to keep it? I hope so!

I'll comment on the news we woke up to, that is the death of Lindsey Graham, later. This post isn't for politics.

Bon féte du Canada! :)
Home from a truly whirlwind trip! I got back at something like 1:30 this morning, put away the essentials, and promptly passed out. I’ve spent the day running around, reacclimating to my city, and doing laundry. I’m also contending with a messed up router, due to power outages in the area while I was away. Evidently something screwed mine up royally. Thank goodness for phone posting! I’m going to be a little more scarce than usual until Monday when I can get it fixed.
Because it apparently has the crud. At least two different people have posted about having issues with the site within the last day, and now I can't click on comments to other people's journal posts without getting an Oops! error. GRRRR.

I'm grateful I've still got my reading page intact, that's for sure. But ugh.
chanter1944: Miraculous Ladybug's Duusu, flying, on a blue background with white sparkles (ML - Duusu says WHEEEEE!)
The closer I get, the more I'm looking forward to this, fully online though it is. That aspect does take some of the shine off the con weekend - there's a limit to what can be managed as far as dealers' room, art room, etc go when you're working out of zoom rooms, Discord channels and the dreaded google whatevers - but still.

I'm three quarters of an hour, give or take, from my first panelist slot of the con and... asking myself the eternal question: Is that a worn spot in the fabric, or is that schmutz on my shirt? :P

Wheeeee!
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
Means stripping the flannel sheets off the bed and swapping them for summer weight cotton ones, washing the winter coat, and counting down the days until it's overwhelmingly likely that frost overnight is no longer a danger so plants can go outside. That benchmark is generally Memorial Day around here.

New life list catches over the last two days: Tennessee warbler (heard while cycling all over the near west side, and now Merlin is IDing them all over the place, so they must be passing through the area), blue-gray gnatcatcher, Cape May warbler, and Blackburnian warbler. I'd never heard of three of those four before! The latter three were heard while chasing DX at Lake Farm Park early this morning. The radio conditions may not have been great, but the dawn chorus certainly was! We were far from the only ones out with bird watching in mind, judging by the packed parking lot and the lady who came through swatting mosquitoes, explaining how she'd been chasing after a bird and later reappeared from a swampy area, though I'm pretty sure we were the only radio ops afoot. Yesterday's adventures on bike trails and residential roads had fellow cyclists, walkers, and joggers everywhere, and both sailboats and rowing crews were taking advantage of the weather on Lake Mendota. The lilacs are making this entire neighborhood smell divine. :)

All in all, it's been a great weekend so far. :) Just nobody spoil me for Eurovision, please? I want to find a youtube upload of the jury voting and watch it unspoiled if I possibly can. Come on, Croatia...
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
Subject line seen on a banner carried by multiple people, leading what was likely a significant percentage of East High School's student body on the march to the square, complete with school marching band (and they had mad rhythm, holy cow). Translation: We're here, and we're not going away!

So yes. Sang and chanted up a storm. Marched until I got mildly footsore. Practiced my Spanish comprehension, and honestly, both official language (our mayor and a county supervisor both read proclamations out to the crowd) and prayers are good for that. I do mean that about prayers, too. I am unexpectedly grateful for the opportunity given me by faith leaders and interpreters on the mic - one pastor, one rabbi. Then went down State Street and had a late lunch at a restaurant pretty definitely run by members of the immigrant community. Taste of Sichuan makes delicious seafood noodle wonton soup, for any local folks so inclined. The relative I was with wasn't, and said, summarily, yuck! :)

I don't believe we had any arrests, disturbances, or difficulties today. If we did, someone clue me in. And if I'm being entirely honest, a significant portion of a high school arriving all at once, doubling the assembled crowd and getting a jubilant welcome by the people already there? That was worth the whole day. I wish I'd seen West and Memorial arrive.
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
In other words (that aren't lyrics quoted from the In The Heights movie adaptation), I'm shortly out of here to a May Day protest. I suspect turnout will eclipse the last No Kings utterly; we have the support of Madison's public school teachers and, very probably, students, to the tune of citywide school closures, and atop that, the UW is in session. You know I'll be keeping a language count, singing and chanting myself hoarse, and marching until my feet take notice. You know I'm hoping we make the news, locally and nationally, for all the best reasons and none of the worst ones.

If I need bailing out by the end of this, I'm calling you, [personal profile] meimichan. :) Seriously, if I need someone to throw my bail, it means the ice-hearted and/or some towering racists showed up and tried something reprehensible. That would be monumentally stupid, given Madison's crowds (diverse, peaceful, vocal, and unlikely to tolerate random innocents being snatched for no reason) but given the ice-hearted... well. Let's just hope I'm imagining the unlikely.
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
Was 17.8 KM, 11.1 miles, contending with noisy roads (12/18, County K, etc) all the way there and back. I needed that. Well, not the noisy roads aspect, that I could've done without, but the ride, yes.

I also needed the farmers market run to the square, if for different reasons. Farm fresh eggs, smoked trout that's going to end up in sandwiches with dark seed bread, and a veggie curry empanada that'll be breakfast tomorrow. :) Also a brief catch-up with one of my favorite vendors, Cora the empanada baker. She is just a delightful person, one of those folks who is unfailingly and honestly kind to everyone she meets.

I did not need the Brewer game loss, blah, but oh well. Nothing I can do about that. Except swear a little, heh.
chanter1944: a lilac tree in bloom (Wisconsin spring: lilac season)
Also I'm low on eloquence and the tireds are setting in, so forgive the rare brevity.

a Covid vaccine booster in the arm=:)
a fantastic musical performance (Hairspray, which my family loves pretty much to a person)=:)
walking the Horicon Marsh main trail=:)
*not* losing a glove on the very same trail thanks to a reasonably brief search, whew!=:)
not getting to pet the black labby who whimpered at me out a slow-moving car's open window=:( - I had to settle for saying "Awwww, baby," as the friendly fuzz and their possibly-a-golden sibling went by. They were clearly well-loved, but still. I would have so pet both puppydogs, had I been given the chance and the okay.
Storm damage=:( - not us, but other parts of Wisconsin, yikes
Merlin IDs=:)
Cardamom in black coffee=:)
Neighbors being excellent to each other=:)
Oldtime radio streams=:)
Synaesthesia=:)
The chance to, potentially, audit a summer course on the literature of the U.S. women's suffrage movement=:) the professor is making sure to include PoC voices in her selections, too
A family and friends political zoom getting zoombombed by that same professor's 50-pound short-haired pointer deciding to be a lap dog=:) there were pets by proxy
Daylilies overwintering successfully and returning from a dormant state=:) Yay! Little green shoots are go! I thought she was a goner for a second there.

Aaaaand not conking out in my chair is probably a good idea. I'm going the heck to bed!
chanter1944: a Pringles can with the words 'you can't write just one' written across it (drabbles are like pringles)

chanter1944: a slightly faded picture of a three-legged torbie kitty cat (supermodel kitty)
That's not hyperbole. This one's truly gasp-worthy.

Over at Love And Hisses, they have a male tortoiseshell foster kitten! Yes really, a male tortie! They're also fostering his equally tortie sister, plus two sweet tabby boys, all of whom are being treated for or monitored in their recovery from a medical issue. Things are looking better every day over there, and oh my goodness, a male tortie...!

I've never met a rare male tricolor cat. The closest I've ever come is one fictional representation purring in Adrien Agreste's ear, and one childhood misunderstanding of a sweet brown tabby's coloration. Someone in the old livejournal tortielove community had one, which was amazing enough, and there were a couple stories of others around - one calico, one dilute calico with extra toes. Maybe some day I'll actually meet one, and then someone will have to pick me up off the floor! XD In the meantime, I'll be enjoying the adventures of Ollie the male tortie and his friends in north Alabama.
chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
I would very much like to attend a local rally in solidarity with Minnesota today - there are events planned nationwide - but it's currently -24C, which is -11F, and it feels like -32C, which is -26F. The wind is making my wind chimes do the intermittent mambo. Schools have closed all over the area, because it's not safe for kids to wait for buses in this. BRRRR! And not only BRRRR! It would be unsafe, in a very real way, for me to be outside for any length of time, even if I layered up.

... Do I head for a rally anyway, despite the horrible weather, or not? A large chunk of me is willing to risk it. I mean, the ICEDamns* aren't taking time off from intimidating and brutalizing people, are they?

*That's an admittedly clumsy play on ice dams i.e. what accumulate on a roof if there's heat escaping a house through the attic or similar, but I couldn't come up with anything better on short notice.
With thanks to someone kind over at [community profile] holiday_wishes! I've needed an icon of these two for ages, and now I finally have one. :) Now I need to finish all the percolating stories I have going involving them...
Today started out and, really, stayed busy in exhausting ways, because it's the last-minute countdown to giftmas stuffmas and the scramble is apparently not over yet. :( However, then things improved! Credit and gratitude to George the pharmacy tech, who was both delightful and kind and who also saved my butt by simply doing his job, knocking down my stress level in a significant way. A prescription refill for necessary meds is go. Whew! Credit and gratitude also to L the coworker, for being more gracious than I likely deserved about my being wound up and showing it. To make a long story short, we were both stressed, we were both buried in work, we were both contending with silly issues brought on by human error, and neither one of us blamed the other in the end. Double whew!

I'm getting a little writing of the fictional kind in, and then I'm going the heck to bed. ZZZZZZ!
chanter1944: DW's dreamsheep as a radio operator, including rig, mic and headset (Dreamsheep dreams of good DX)
I'm late in realizing the fact, but yep, this comm is up and running again! I need to get my own wishlist posted over there.
chanter1944: a house and road blanketed in snow (Wisconsin winter: buried in snay)
Wet, slushy, sloppy snow is not out of the ordinary. Neither is bracing wind. Bleh! Very glad I made the last outdoor farmers market of the year this morning, before the weather went the expected route on us.

I do *not* envy anyone running the marathon tomorrow...! The snow isn't expected to stick, but still.

well, crud

Oct. 17th, 2025 11:21 pm
chanter1944: paratroopers Talbert and Smith in Carentan, Tab looking delighted, Smith embarrassed (BoB - Carentan: Tab and Smithy - ack!)
Instead of the Brewers kicking the Dodgers' butts, they kicked our butts. Paraphrase from the original Charmed is go. Well, dang it. As I texted my sister, it was still a hell of a run. Thanks for an amazing year, boys. Now everybody stick around for 2026, please! I don't want to lose a one of this roster to a trade.

Got my [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles signup in under the wire, whew! That always intimidates me, far more than writing the actual work(s). I think it's the number of offers and requests that does it.

Tonight, there has been cursing both at the baseball game and series score, and at bluetooth keyboards and their habit of randomly unpairing from the associated laptop. Grrrrr! Pain in the backside! This one took a maneuver attempted purely on hopeful chance to sort out. Seriously, quit doing that, otherwise perfectly nice keyboard.

Tomorrow, there will be an enormous, peaceful rally. I hope our turnout, both nationally and locally, knocks June's numbers out of the park -ouch, yes, phrasing. Dang Dodgers.
chanter1944: an older house and surrounding autumn scenery (Wisconsin autumn: smells like fall)
The Brewers just punched their ticket to the NLCS! Boom, my dears! I was more than a little nervous that we weren't going to pull that off, but I'm delighted I was worrying about nothing!

Yes, I've been following the season all the way along. Folks who know me RL have heard me squeaking over baseball all summer. There's more squeaking to follow, now! My youngest sister and I are batting around (pun totally intended) getting tickets to one of the NLCS games in Milwaukee, if we're able and prices aren't too high for us. I know, and she knows, that I'll be bringing a portable radio for the play-by-play if we do go. Right now, I'm just going to roll around in the warm fuzzies for a minute. XD
