Disclaimer: I do not have a degree in any of these subjects. I am sixteen years old and as a result do not have education in these areas nor do I claim any level of expertise--I am simply exploring my own thoughts on the topic with the aid of information found in books/the internet/what I have observed, and sometimes it will go in the wrong direction; I may over-analyse or state what is obvious to those who have studied these subjects properly. So please bear with me--correct me when I'm wrong, say if my conclusions are completely barmy/obvious/the conclusions of an imbecile, but don't presume that I have a formal grounding in any of this.

Jun. 15th, 2012 10:04 pm I was thinking about this phrase earlier today. "Write what you know" -- for ages it was something that my mum would throw back at me whenever I showed her any of my writing. "You don't know what it's like to be a police officer! You don't know what it's like to be a gay boy! [I laugh a little at that one now.] You don't know what it's like to be in a relationship! Why do you keep writing about stuff you don't know anything about? Write what you know!!!!1!!!" are just a small sample of the things she would tell me.
At that point in time, she was my main input when it came to creative works -- she taught me to draw, to sew, to paint, to do calligraphy and to read aloud -- and I didn't understand what she meant when she snapped at me that my stories were never any good because I didn't know what I was writing about. So I just...stopped. I stopped thinking so big, and started writing small stories about things I knew about, such as going on sailing holidays and going to private school. I leapt at the chance to experience anything purely because I thought I would then be ~allowed~ to write about it. But the spark died from my writing and I ended up retreating to reading rather than writing (a decision I don't particularly regret, I have to say, because I read some wonderful books in those years and my understanding of language grew in leaps and bounds).
As I read those books, however, I couldn't help but wonder how any of the great stories were ever written if the writer had to live those experiences first -- how did Shakespeare write Romeo and Juliet -- surely he didn't have a whirlwind three-day romance ending in a double suicide? How did JK Rowling write the Harry Potter books? She was never a teenage boy attending wizarding school. If they hadn't experienced all that they wrote about, then how did they write those books so well?

There are few things that can be filed under my List Of Things That I Have To Throw Into My Giant Cesspit Of Anger To Prevent Myself From Frothing At the Mouth In Frustration And Fury, but one of these things is the idea that there is meaning in the phrase “what it means to be a man”. It’s a phrase that I hear tossed around a lot—in books, on tv, in movies, from my dad, from other people—yet nobody ever has a real concrete idea of what it actually means. That, alone, would be enough to go on my List of Irritating Things That People Need To Think About More And Actually Use Their Noggins For Once, but when added to the fact that there is no such twin phrase as “what it means to be a woman”, it really starts to piss me off even further, because it suggests that being a man is this mystical, cult-like thing that only those born into it can Truly Understand™.

On the subject of identity and labelling
Feb. 12th, 2012 01:39 pmA lot of people say that labels are limiting and confining, but I find there to be a sense of confirmation and freedom in labels. Finding a label that fits gives me an "aha!" moment--I feel like I'm okay, like there is something to explain this strangeness I'm feeling. It makes me feel better, to know how to describe myself--I can't stand not knowing how to describe something, my identity included. It's not really something that I need to know in order to justify myself to other people, but instead so that I can categorize myself in my head in order to go about my usual business without my identity slopping all over the place waiting to be neatly filed away.
