How Courtyard Blocks Promote Social Connection

The courtyard block is one of the oldest and most successful urban forms we have. If you’ve walked through Barcelona, Vienna, Berlin, Stockholm, Rome, Prague, Copenhagen, or almost any great European city, you have likely admired courtyard block neighborhoods without necessarily realizing what you were seeing. From the street, you see the continuous building wall: shops, doors, windows, balconies, cornices, stoops, and street life. What you often do not see is the second world inside the block: a protected green courtyard hidden behind the public face of the city.

America has few courtyard blocks that are solid walls of independently owned buildings. But it does have some things are that are related...

Some delicious awful little bites. :D

Sunless Sea: cathedral of the sea, three-sentence fic by [personal profile] wintersday. This is lovely and eerie, exactly right for the canon.

Deeplight - Frances Hardinge: slow blackout by [archiveofourown.org profile] veinyy. Gen, 1k. The Gathergeist’s process in losing a mind. The Gathergeist definitely seemed like one of the more, idk, abstract of the gods, and it's really interesting reading this and thinking about what actual thoughts it might've had.

The Haunting of Hill House - Jackson: Brick and Bone by [archiveofourown.org profile] Kantayra. Nell gen, drabble. I love how Nell has changed the character of the house.

OW: The Seal's Child by [archiveofourown.org profile] Daeger. Abandoned Daughter of a Runaway Selkie Bride, gen, triple drabble. Beautiful and ominous and so sad.

OW: The glory of the kill by [archiveofourown.org profile] exceptionallyunfortunate. Serial Killer Trapped in Time Loop, gen, triple drabble. Packs a lot of enjoyable irony into very few words.

OW: let it be by [archiveofourown.org profile] TheFlirtMeister. Serial Killer Victim Who Lived & Serial Killer Victim Who Died, gen, 800 words. An emotional wringer, just really fun in a horrible way. :D

The Terror: undeath by [archiveofourown.org profile] Pornabus_Sockerton. Hodgson & Crozier, gen, triple drabble. Crozier says nothing, and Hodgson returns to London venerated. Emotionally brutal in the best way.

The Terror: the ever-fleeting warmth by [archiveofourown.org profile] Ekevka. Collins gen, double drabble. Oh no, Collins. ;____; His brain is just doing him in from all angles.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle: Butter Moon by [archiveofourown.org profile] stilettodandelion. Merricat gen, 1100 words. I feel a hunger inside me for all things. This is gorgeously written. So many luscious food descriptions! Just very vivid descriptions that engage all my senses. And I love Merricat's constant, conscious restraint from hurting Constance, which becomes less convincing with every repetition. Amazing stuff.

In honor of Moon Landing Day, James Marsters reading "1969" by Alex Dimitrov. Tumblr logged it as "mature content" and my only guess as to why is that it flagged the 69 as something other than a date.

Meanwhile, now having access to Apple TV, I'm thinking back on the conversation I recently had with my dad about using a TV series as a way to avoid decision paralysis. You simply go onto the next episode. I want to keep working through what Ryan Gosling movies I've got, but once that's over, it might well be time for some serials again.

I have heard line and verse on the fuckery that is F'lar/Lessa and F'nor/Brekke with their nonconsensual sex flowing into committed loving relationships.

But I will maintain that out of all the speculative fiction I read as a kid/preteen, the most fucked up pairing is Jondalar/Ayla from the Earth's Children series. And I will die mad about the second half of the series constantly reinforcing it, bringing in patriarchal bullshit, and forcing Ayla into a mold of a woman she was NOT MEANT TO BE.

Suckage!

I rode outside Saturday and Sunday, and the higher handlebars worked out great! A little discomfort in my left hand, but none of the brutal numbness that has plagued me for so long. The rides themselves, though... god, the heat. Saturday's ride finished at 91o, and needed an additional rest stop to let my heart rate slow down again. On Sunday's ride, that extra stop came two miles earlier! :( I finished that ride at 90o, but the Real-Feel temperature was 100. Gah. I didn't feel especially hot, mainly just tired.

The Sunday ride the week before was only slightly less sucky. We've been having some humidity, which is unusual for Sacramento, and that makes everything unpredictable. But I saw some more tiny quail babies this weekend, and HalfshellHusband saw a baby bunny on his ride. So cute! \o/

When we had guests a couple of weekends ago, we finally had enough strong people to move our bedroom furniture to where we've wanted it to be. Only took a year and a half! I did something to my right wrist the first week after we moved back in, and it sometimes gets a little painful and weak. It feels like something needs to "pop," but that doesn't happen. It's made me useless at moving heavy things, which is really disappointing. But! We're finally done with that! I'm slowly putting pictures and other decorations on our bedroom wall now, and will eventually be able to get rid of the storage bin that's been sitting on the floor all this time.

Now, if I could only figure out what to do with the rest of the pictures (or even whether to keep them). Our daughter did a great job of hanging the bulk of our artwork, but most things are spaced farther apart than they used to be, so some pictures are still pending. I also have a couple of things that need frames. Both are on canvases that are nearly 1/2 thick, which makes that harder. One is a copy of "Starry Night on the Rhone" that my mother painted, and it's large— 20"x18". The other is a Southwestern-style picture our daughter painted, which I love, but it's predominantly orange and the colors don't go with any of the rest of our art or wall colors (apart from the white walls). Plus, I can't figure out what color the frame should be. :( And then we have family pictures but less room for those (fewer flat surfaces) now. Ugh. Decisions! Will the house ever feel complete?

Wow, so much to post about. First of all, update on my last post where I mentioned about Livejournal seeming to have been blocked to those trying to access it from the United States, all in all that seemed to have been the case for about two to two and a half weeks or so but then randomly began to start to work again. Not sure what was up with that.

Amazingly, tinypinkmouse podficced four (4!!!!) of my DMBJ fics:
Oh for Those Lazy Days [Podfic]. Summary: Retirement suited Wang Pangzi.
As Evening Slowly Slides Into Night [Podfic]. Summary: An evening, like many others, for the Iron Triangle. (And their shared big bed.)
Unsteady Footsteps Along a Familiar Path [Podfic]. Summary: As Tianzhen's health deteriorated he'd requested this, one last adventure for the Iron Triangle, but why was it so similar to Pangzi's dream?
Travel Down the Road and Back Again (and Again) [Podfic]. Summary: The Iron Triangle's adventures don't always go according to plan.

Please go give them a listen, tinypinkmouse's work is always amazing.

Crafting-wise I've finished a few things things, a rug and a market bag. The market bag is actually pretty exciting since I actually created the pattern for it! Full write up of pattern is in this dreamwidth post (at some point I may add it to ravelry but I don't have the brainpower for it at the moment) but see the bag and the rug under the cut:

Grey knotted rug, 32”x22.5”
Grey rug made from a torn queen-sized fitted sheet - 32” x 22.5”
Image
I also made a slouchy string market bag because a discord friend was having problems with the pattern they were using and it was easier to just make my own and share pics at each step than try to help any other way but that one is less exciting than the rectangular one.

Have two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (one MDZS fic and a bunch of [community profile] taggle art recs):

Unnatural Consequences by Ashura (11k, locked to archive)
Summary: Lan Wangji began to play, and Wei Wuxian poked through the wreckage of fallen trees. The guqin’s soothing song cleared some of the haze of resentment, and Wei Wuxian could feel his muscles relaxing, the dull throbbing ache at the tip of his spine beginning to fade away. He stepped carefully between shattered branches, nudging away the piles of leaves and debris. He was hardly even paying attention when he felt something… respond.

When Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji encounter a creature that even the two of them together can't defeat, it seems a little unbelievable that nobody in the surrounding area has heard of it. In the wilderness north of Gusu, they uncover a secret that has waited years for one particular answer - one it turns out they might be just the people to provide. (interesting post-canon LWJ/WWX casefic)

Some [community profile] taggle art recs, works anon until July 27th, check out the whole collection here

DCU
- where the hell is my lover! Summary: Art of Pamela Isley with some art nouveau inspiration!

MDZS/The Untamed:

Original Work
- [ART] Pegasus in the mist Summary: It does not fear you. Do not come closer. (dark and foreboding)
- Bellerophon's Field Guide to Equines (art and descriptions of a Pegasus, Kelpie, Hippocamp, and Unicorn. Very cool)
- [Art] Oceanside Stroll. Summary: It's a beautiful evening for a sunset stroll on the beach. (wonderful dragon characters)
- [ART] An Avid Reader. Summary: Meet Snort, a guard of the Evil Wizard’s Small Dungeon. (such an adorable goblin!)

The weather here has been stupidly hot and humid all month and the wildfires have made the air terrible. Hope things are better where all of you are :)

I managed to miss posting again last week, but I remembered this week, so here are a few songs beginning with K. Only 5 this week.

First off, the Highwaymen, live in concert, with Waylon in fine form.

Another from Gail Davies. I've heard other people sing this one, but it suits her voice perfectly.

Aaron Tippin with one of his best songs.

Some good advice from Ty England...

Finally, a short, sweet instrumental.

And that's it for this week. Enjoy!
