cw: brief mention of past attempted noncon
“Oh,” says Stede, sounding surprised. Ed tilts his head, and Stede blushes. “Forgive me, I just…” Stede fumbles, before blurting out, “you were allowed another man? As your… mate?”
The question puzzles Ed. “Of course,” he says. “Why would that matter? Is that not something humans do?”
Stede exhales. “Well, it's not really allowed, is it? It’s… frowned up in ‘polite’ society, I suppose,” he says with a frown of his own, and Ed can tell he’s downplaying it. He doesn't understand--
“And one of the expectations of a human marriage is to further the family name, to produce children, so…” Stede adds, trailing off.
“Oh,” says Ed, still feeling confused. “Izzy and I never had children. That was something neither of us had any interest in.”
Stede blinks.
“Are you saying, the two of you--you could have had children together, if you wanted?”
Ed’s brow furrows. “Of course,” he says, beginning to realize they’re not on the same page. “I guess our, er, bits differ... quite a bit.” And doesn't that give him something to ponder.
Stede snorts. “Yes, I suppose so.” He looks like he’s still trying to digest all that Ed told him, so Ed’s quiet, letting him think.
After a moment, Stede gives his hand a gentle squeeze. “My apologies. Please continue.”
Ed nods. “For a long time, Izzy and I were on top of the world. We were untouchable, and we were ruthless. I'd find the blokes, get them to trust me, and then--and then Izzy would take over from there."
"Don't get me wrong, I've drowned more than my fair share in my day, but Izzy... he is something else all together. Loves the violence of the kill."
Stede shudders, and Ed rushes to continue.
"And at the time, I enjoyed it," he admits. He doesn’t want Stede to get a false impression of him. He feels like it’s important he’s honest about his past. “Izzy and I--we weren’t always kind to each other, but when things went right, when I did what he expected of me, he was almost… different. Almost.”
It’s difficult, thinking back on all the years he spent with Izzy, the scraps he got by on. How he came to associate his own brutality with the amount of affection he would get from his mate, his every attempt at sweetness rebuffed unless he'd done something right. How he convinced himself it was enough while he was starving for more.
For something soft, and easy. Free of complication and turmoil.
“And I know that Izzy cared for me, too, in his own way,” he continues, biting the inside of his cheek in thought. “Or, he cared for that part of me, at least. My title, my reputation, and who I was to him because of it. What that meant for him. But…”
“But that’s not all you are,” Stede finishes, sounding certain. Ed nods, stupidly relieved that Stede can see that. He wonders why Izzy refused to.
“All the violence, all the killing… it wears on you,” he says. “Or, it did me, anyway. I think Izzy loved every moment of it. And he expected me to feel the same.”
“You didn’t?” Stede guesses.
Ed nods. “I was so tired,” he says, closing his eyes for a moment. “I wanted out. I thought, I dunno, maybe Izzy would understand. I pictured us running away together, finding some warm waters to spend the rest of our days in peace."
"It was a really stupid idea.”
“It sounds like a lovely idea, actually,” Stede says, patting his hand.
Ed snorts. “If you knew Izzy, you would think differently,” he mutters. With a sigh, he continues. “He was disgusted I even brought it up. Said I was becoming too soft.”
“Nothing wrong with a bit of softness,” Stede murmurs, and Ed looks up at him, really taking him in. Stede is very soft. He thinks he likes that.
They stare at each other for a moment before looking away at the same time, both of them flushing. Ed clears his throat, throwing himself back into the story.
“We fought about it,” he says, remembering the altercation. “It was ugly.”
Stede rubs the back of his hand with this thumb.
“Merfolk traditionally mate for life,” Ed continues, and he feels Stede’s movements hesitate, as if he's about to stop touching him. Ed hurries on. “But I think we both knew this was going to be bond-ending.”
Stede resumes the careful stroking of his hand.
“And while there are some exceptions, a bond usually only ends with the death of a mate.”
Stede inhales a quiet breath, and Ed turns his hand over, pressing his palm against Stede’s.
“I really think he would have killed me if he could have,” Ed says, making Stede tense. “He would have seen that as preferable. Honorable, even. But I– I couldn’t do it. He was all I had. So I ran.
"I was upset, and injured, and distracted. I got caught by those other pirates, and Izzy left me for dead. Didn’t even try to help me.”
Stede looks angry. “How could he leave you behind?” he whispers.
Ed sighs. “We weren’t on the best terms,” he mutters, “and I guess he saw it as an easy way to get rid of me. Keep his hands clean. Maybe even a way to get sympathy, I can’t be sure."
"But that’s how I ended up captive.”
Stede makes a sympathetic noise. “How long were you their prisoner?”
Ed furrows his brow. “I’m not sure,” he says honestly, trying to recall. The scar on his face he got the night he fought Izzy was almost healed by the time Stede found him, though. “I was already hurt, and they weren’t… kind to me. My time there all runs together.” He doesn’t mention that his clearest memory from that period is being rescued by Stede. Seeing his face for the first time. “I was incredibly weak, but the captain had one of his men try to hold me down, so he could--so he could...” he trails off, and Stede squeezes his hand, comforting him.
“I’m so sorry you went through that,” he murmurs, gazing at him with sincerity. Ed takes a deep breath, laughing without any humor.
“They couldn’t figure it out, anyhow,” he mutters, “and when I bit off the captain's finger when he stuck the filthy things in my mouth, they decided it wasn’t worth the risk.”
The other guy didn't fare nearly as well. Ed doesn't mention that.
“They deserved much worse,” Stede says. The normally gentle man looks angry on Ed’s behalf. It makes him feel… something. Makes him smile, despite the dark conversation.
“After fighting them, and Izzy, I was worn out,” he continues, “and they weren’t feeding me, or doing anything to treat my injuries, adding more everyday. I felt so helpless.” Stede shifts, and Ed sees him make an aborted movement with his other hand, like he wants to reach out and touch him more. He thinks he’d allow it.
“The ship was empty when we found it,” Stede says instead, and Ed nods.
“I think they left to make a deal for me,” he says. “They couldn't figure out what else to do with me. Didn’t think I could understand them, but I overheard them talking. Said they couldn’t do it on their ship because I was too unpredictable. Thought they were gonna make a fortune. They were probably pissed when they came back and I was gone.”
Stede huffs an amused breath. “Well, I’m glad to have inconvenienced them.”
Ed grins, shaking his head. “You're different, from other humans. Intersting.” he says, making Stede flush.
“I, er, find you very interesting, too,” he says after a moment, and Ed smiles to himself. Stede’s quiet, but he clearly has more he wants to ask.
Ed squeezes his hand. “What is it?” he says.
Stede bites his lip, still flushed. “Well, I suppose, I just wanted to know if…” he trails off, shaking his head, seeming to second guess himself. “Forgive me. It’s nothing. It doesn’t matter.”
“Can’t be both,” Ed says, teasing him. Now he’s curious.
Stede huffs. “Fine. I guess I was wondering if there’s any way… Izzy’s still in the picture?” He glances away as he asks it, and Ed has to hold back a grin.
“Nah,” he says, too casual for the emotional turmoil the situation caused him. “That ended the second he took tried to kill me. That's something you don't come back from.”
Stede looks embarrassed. “I’m sorry. That was a foolish question, and terribly insensitive.”
Ed shrugs. “Why do you want to know?” He glances at Stede out of the corner of his eye, noting the blush still lingering.
“No reason,” Stede is quick to answer, making Ed’s grin wider.
“Sure,” he murmurs, sinking back into the water, giving Stede his space. He thinks he may have flustered the poor man too much. Stede looks equal parts disappointed and relieved by his retreat.
Ed settles down into the water, until his hair billows out around him, and Stede clears his throat, rising to his feet.
“Thank you for entrusting me with your story,” he murmurs. Ed blinks at him. “I imagine it was tiring, so I’ll leave you to your rest.” And while Ed doesn’t really want the evening to be over yet, but he has some thinking to do, as well. So he nods, and Stede gives him an awkward smile.
“Goodnight, then,” he says, turning away.
“Night night,” Ed murmurs, watching him leave.
Stede closes the door quietly behind him, to give Ed his privacy, and Ed exhales a heavy sigh. Loathe as he is to admit it, he… likes Stede. Very much.
