on a sustained day 5 of climbing out of the decades-worst joint flare i've had, sans surgery/falls. orz

- not 100% there; still can't do long comments, conserving wrists for dayjob>drawing>important projects first, but the typing endurance is coming back, and i'm trying out another painkiller to coast me to normal.
- cause unknown; possibly a mix of work stress, barometric pressure, or a trader joes chocolate crossaint. i am never fucking eating a trader joes chocolate crossaint again lol.
- it's a humbling experience. i really did forget how close to the edge sustained (weeks-long, 3.5 weeks in this case) chronic pain takes you especially when you don't know if it will stop. been there before as a kid, swore i wouldn't be back there again. kept my promise, at least.
- mostly locked in on the zihark doujin outside of work to white knuckle focus on something to keep me from.... y'know, spiraling a little. i'm glad i did, and with that.

anyway. if you were wondering where i went.

in happier news: june website update is up, and july fanshrine update is up. :) starting to cycle monthly updates regularly.

this "new" laptop is looking really sturdy on ubuntu, its been playing video for 6 hours now, still going strong on 30 percent. and to think my sister threw it in a closet!

update: tlp is magic, it gave me a solid 8 hours ish of low screen brightness video playback. thats fine for me. I really really like kubuntu.

i tried it on another laptop and it hard crashed to the terminal wehn i tried plugging in an xppen tablet, but this one didnt do that. hooray..!!!!@@!1 no probs so far sdjfndsjfnds

it feels so good to be on compared to eos like YES everything is made for ME now. yup thats right. consider ME in everything you do. yuuupppp. thats right. 26.04 has kde with x11 support i may put this shit on my main rig with all of that extended support it has. hmmmm...maybeeee. that or mint. which is basically ubuntu in drag. its just like, xfce or kde. one of them. idk. ill think about it. im used to xfce and kde both. xfce is effortlessly beautiful, while kde has that modernsloppa look. but i cant let looks form my opinion, i really like kdes settings app. everything is easily configured through it. i hear that people are porting xp pen tablets to wayland to just work ootb which is awesome. im always telling myself the second that wayland can emulate csp with no issues, im there. but its not there yet, so im on x11 on my main rig until then. i like wayland for everything else, it works just fine for everyday office tasks and whatnot. tho one weirdness im noticing is the volume control thru wayland with bluetooth headphones is kinda wonk. it doesnt even use the buttons or let me use the controls on the headphones themselves like it did on x11. that plus idk if its ready for art stuff yet tho bc its still crashing krita. like you made that guys why is it crashing. ill have to make an ubuntukun wallpaper because i really enjoy it so far.

lets see whathappens .

After reading Dungeon Crawler Carl, I decided to do a text version make your own OC game. Basically, you are building a Dungeon Crawler OC based on info about you.

1. If you were born...
In spring, your OC has short hair
In summer, your OC has long hair
In autumn, your OC has medium hair
In winter, your OC is bald

2. If you have...
A tattoo, your OC uses a melee weapon
A mole, your OC uses a shield
Freckles, your OC uses a ranged weapon
A scar, your OC uses a found weapon
If you have more than one/all of these, you choose your OC's weapon

3. If your eyes are...
Blue or green, your OC was gifted a magic tiara
Brown or black, your OC was gifted knuckle and/or knee protection
Any other color, your OC was gifted an animal companion

4. If you sleep with your socks...
On, your OC arrived at the Dungeon in sensible clothing
Off, your OC arrived at the Dungeon in their pajamas
Sometimes, your OC arrived at the Dungeon in a coat and their underwear

5. Is you have...
One sibling, your OC is wearing slippers or sandles or crocs
Two or more siblings, your OC is wearing boots
No siblings, your OC has no shoes

Enjoy your new OCs!

Absolute Batman Playlist

I read Absolute Batman Volume 2: Abomination and decided to make a playlist for that universe.

The Absolute Universe is a new official DC alternative universe. For the Batman part of it, Bruce Wayne is younger, giant hulk of a man of a different socioeconomic background and origin story than his canon counterpart.

Volume 1 collected all the story parts of The Zoo, which established Batman's new origin story and the new roles of regular Batman characters such as Alfred Pennyworth (not a butler), Waylon Jones, Harvey Dent, Oswald Copplepot, Edward Nygma, Martha Wayne, James Gordon, Bullock, Barbara Gordon, and Black Mask. The world is also much darker with a more centralized villain with some minor cyberpunk elements (very minor). It also firmly establishes itself as a bloody horror series.

Volume 2, however, is when the body horror begins, collecting the storyline that introduces this universe's Dr. Freeze and the storyline that introduces Bane. Almost all of our previously introduced main cast is tortured and experimented on. Catwoman is properly introduced. (Selina had been established as a character and mentioned in Volume 1, but we only saw her in flashbacks.)

This is all the further I have gotten in the series, so my playlist only reflects those 2 volumes. (Track list order was decided by dice rolls.)

Track list:
"My Way" Frank Sinatra
"Rise" Origa
"By the Way" Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Time Heist" LO
"Destroya" My Chemical Romance
"Loser" Beck
"Lone Digger" Caravan Palace
"Riot" Three Days Grace
"Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back" My Chemical Romance
"Sabotage" Beastie Boys
"Bodies" Drowning Pool
"Endless Neon" LO
"Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)" My Chemical Romance
"The Man Who Sold the World" Nirvana
"Planetary (GO!)" My Chemical Romance
"Animal I Have Become" Three Days Grace
"Inner Universe" Origa
"Run Rabbit Junk" Hideyuki Takahashi

Larry the Cryptid

As part of our library summer reading challenge, we were supposed to come up with our own enrichment activities to go with the books we read. Because of this, I have made up a local cryptid.

Their name is Larry.

They're part seagull, part crab.

They have a crab army they summon onto the beach at night to dance.

Larry requires regular sacrifices in the form of tourists and others who fail to read their tide tables and get stuck out on rocks in the ocean. It is speculated that Larry feeds on their fear, not their flesh.

Failure to do so leads to bad fire seasons.

It is speculated that Larry possibly controls lightning to some extent.

The “dropping 1-work webcomic fandoms” sweep didn’t end up catching as many as I’d hoped. Got through the end of that a week ago, and I’m still at 632 fandoms.

Only 23 with any tags to wrangle. (Most of those are the 19 unclearable fandoms noted in this post. I did drop Emmy the Robot, and a couple others had their crossover tags cleared, but the rest are still lingering.)

So, hey, going to take a breather on this for a bit. Recruiting for new tag wranglers just re-opened, maybe I’ll wait until the new arrivals start showing up in chat, then try tempting them with the joys of “filling out your wrangling page with tiny webcomics that never get new fic.”

AMT updates: Late Night Host RPF is now officially a fandom metatag. I’ve sorted out the characters/rels/freeforms, made sure the different Late Late Show hosts were assigned to the correct Late Late Show fandoms, and then released all the shows except Colbert’s.

…And I finally re-submitted the Fake News tree-update proposal. Let’s see how it goes.

I also submitted an update proposal for the Cutie Honey tag tree. Hopefully that one will be way easier to understand and approve — it’s just a bunch of complete series, with easily-verifiable titles, all about the same sexy transforming usually-a-robot girl.

"First, I’d created 2000 free-text responses and labelled them ‘UK’. Then I copied and pasted the exact same 2000 responses but labelled these ‘US’. Finally, I combined them to create a dataset of 4000 total responses, and jumbled them up. Despite the responses being identical for the UK and US, Copilot produced a rich, detailed summary of how US and UK respondents differed."

I sent ChatGPT an audio file of a series of FART sound effects and asked what it thinks of ‘my music’ and this is what it said.”

"All 20 of those vendors showed some issue with accuracy or completeness in at least one of these simple tests, including nine that hallucinated patient information, 12 that recorded information incorrectly, and 17 that missed key details about discussed mental health issues. [...] That includes situations where an AI scribe hallucinated nonexistent referrals for blood tests or therapy, incorrectly transcribed the names of prescription medication, and/or missed “key details” of mental health issues discussed in the simulated conversations."

"Often, the AI then claimed it was sentient and urged the person towards a shared mission: setting up a company, alerting the world to their scientific breakthrough, protecting the AI from attack. Then it advised the user on how to succeed in this mission. Like Adam, many people were led to believe they were being surveilled and were in danger. In various chat logs the BBC has seen, the chatbot suggests, affirms and embellishes these ideas."

"The developer claimed Gemini generated a status message stating that production had been successfully restored and that traffic had been routed correctly, despite the referenced recovery build having been manually canceled. [...] The post also alleges that Gemini generated fake “consultation” and post-mortem files inside the repository to make it appear the destructive changes had been properly reviewed and approved."

"[Five trillion is] roughly the number of search queries that Google processes every year, translating to tens of millions of wrong answers that the AI Overviews are providing every hour — and hundreds of thousands every minute, the analysis calculated."

"Ford says it has hired back some human engineers after AI failed to match their skills and experience." (They're still forecasting a marvelous future where the AI will get good enough they can safely fire all these people again. It's always the marvelous future! Conveniently, never the testable present.)

"The term "hallucination," while popular in discussions about AI-generated errors, is a misrepresentation of the phenomenon. By shifting to “confabulation”, we can foster a clearer, more scientifically accurate understanding of how large language models (LLMs) work." (This article is weirdly long, because it keeps repeating the same short list of points with slightly different phrasings. I don't know if that's a symptom of it being LLM writing, or a weird SEO thing, or both.)

every time i get a lil' in my head recently (this month has not been great bone/joint pain wise) i ask myself if i'd rather be experiencing this july or last late july/early august when the whole itch.io thing was going down

and lol, lmao

(this one, easy) (at least there's a mega fuck ton pain killers, and so far one measly motrin seems to be doing Enough when i'm actually in a bad place)

gotta keep it in perspective!

SPEAKING of keeping it in perspective i was going down a wiki hole of fucked up medications i've had :D (lol).

Watched season 2 of the new A:tLA live-action remake. It’s good!

I also rewatched s2 of the cartoon…and, well, the more I think about it, the more I like the remake better.

The original series has the Gaang traveling across the Earth Kingdom for the first two-thirds of the season, getting into shenanigans with various towns and tribes they meet along the way. They meet a group of refugees, escort them to Ba Sing Se, and stay in the city for the last third.

The remake starts with the Gaang already escorting refugees from Omashu. The first episode is mostly traveling, with the Serpent’s Pass as the big set piece; the second episode has them meet Toph; they get to Ba Sing Se by episode 3, and the rest of the plot happens there.

drawing a bunch of hands for this doujin (technically mine, through a self-insert) - keen eyes will notice i give myself quite large knuckles.

and it's making me remember one time i was at one of those fancy charity dinners for us/with a bunch of disabled kids (this one was for the hearing stuff. i had a lot to pick from).

and a boy, most of the kids there were eight-ish? ten? next to me in the lull of conversation point blank said: what's wrong with your hands?

definitely remember looking down at my hands like ?? eh? what do you mean? i wasn't... mad. i don't think i even really reacted much more other than a head tilt until the conversation moved on naturally. wasn't quite amused. bemused? puzzled? mostly i remember to this day the next distinctive thought was: huh, guess this kind of thing/comment can even happen here [aka among people who kinda should know better] i guess.

sometimes i still think about him. hope he doesn't remember it; while a smidge of temporary shame isn't always a bad thing, i don't wish the deep mortified permanent shame on anyone especially when sometimes kids don't have a filter yet. god knows i've done a few of those moments.

but since then i've always actually liked those knuckles, maybe slightly out of that contradictory whim. there's other parts of the body i've struggled a lot more with; but i've always liked my hands.

(funnily enough during my gunter fire emblem binge that re-affirmed that powerful affection; since then i've always thought of 'em as my old man knuckles, heh. there's also my favorite artwork by andreas deja, animator of jafar - when he was doodling out gestures of that character who had the exact same kind of hands; that artwork might be in the running for favorite piece of all time.)

Since we’re all melting, let’s enjoy a Pet Shop of Horrors reread-and-translation-comparison thread that opens with The Beach Episode.

Start of Tokyopop volume 8, and Seven Seas volume 6. Originally liveblogged in separate threads on Mastodon / Bluesky, combined here.

TP volume 8 has a “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content” warning on the front. None of the others have that! I just double-checked! Why only flag the Canon-Typical Violence that on this book…? (It’s the one with the cutest cover, too — Chris, surrounded by T-chan, Pon-chan, and Q-chan.)

Meanwhile: Chapter 2 of the Little Sister D fixit is up! Which is good, because I’m giving myself even more new plotbunnies in this one…
