What We’re All About

We believe that anyone can be creative and create beautiful letters with the right exercise and support. So we are here to share that you don’t have to be born with the gift of beautiful writing to venture into Lettering & Calligraphy.

Who runs this studio?

Hola! My name is Joy and I’ve been a full-time lettering artist since 2013.

I am obsessed with pens, letters and I also have a thing for lemon pie.

After a few years of selling physical products in my store and retailers all over the country, I decided to venture into the digital realm and offer fonts, cut files, and other resources for creatives.

The studio used to be just my offering of web-design & branding services starting in late 2010, this version of the studio started in 2013 and in 2017 I completely re-structured the offerings starting with the design of my very first font and has since then the studio has grown to host more than 1000+ products from fonts, to cut files, and procreate brushes.

I love creating products that will help you embellish or make your life easier. If you want to learn a bit more about me on a personal level just hop on the blog!

Who We Are

The HowJoyful Studio site is a part of the HowJoyful Blog, and HowJoyful LLC, run by lettering artist Joy Kelley.

While most of the content is personally created by me (Joy Kelley), I do have help in several parts of my business, and this is why many times I refer to HowJoyful as “we” =]

My blog, started in 2010 along with my studio. I jumped to full-time freelance lettering in 2013. Since then, I’ve been working on teaching, developing products, and working with many businesses in freelance projects as well as licensing.

One of the aspects I enjoy the most is teaching. I’ve been sharing projects in my blog since its inception, but I have a special place in my heart for in-person workshops because I love the interaction with students.

If you would like to learn more about me and what I do, take a look at this section on my blog.

The HowJoyful Studio

The studio was founded in 2010 along with my blog howjoyful.com

Through the years the studio has moved locations a few times, and after being in our storefront for quite some time, I made the hard call to close it, and move the studio back to our house.

After taking the studio back to where it all started, and enjoying this office for a couple to years, we sold our house.

After spending about a year living in an RV with our little crew, we finally found the land of our dreams—and with it, the perfect place to plant new creative roots. One of the garage spaces on our property became my new studio, and I couldn’t wait to make it my own.

This time around, I designed the studio with a new priority in mind: content creation and design. Instead of focusing on storage and shipping like before, I’ve centered the space around what brings me the most joy—drawing, filming, teaching, and creating.

I still carved out a small area for order fulfillment, but this new setup reflects where my heart (and business) are headed. I’m so excited to share the process and projects that will come to life in this new creative space!

Making fonts

Font making was on my “to-do” bucket list for years, I have started a bunch of times; I purchased the software and watched tutorials on YouTube, but there always seemed to be something that was more important.

Until I decided to switch the path of my business and ventured into passive income in a quest to free up time so I could enjoy more with my 3 little boys.

That’s when I found the “Learn font making” course by my friend Teela. After dedicating a couple of weeks to learning and creating my very first font, I recover the investment in the course in just a matter of days.

I am a big advocate for passive income streams for lettering artists, and I’ve written a lot about it in case you are curious.

An oldie

This is the very first big piece I made for fun back in 2013, it makes me cringe a little bit, but it’s so good to look back and see how much this could be improved, I guess I need to make the 2.0 version.
