Premise

Jun. 12th, 2013 12:43 am
You wake up in your bed with a bag of your things beside you. There's a note beside you on the nightstand. It states your roommate's name (if you have one currently) and the floor you're assigned to and along with the following message:

Welcome to Hotel Inferno. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Please read and memorize the rules of the hotel so there are no problems during your stay. If you need something, call for counter and someone may be sent to you. Your belongings are in the bag at the end of your bed. This is the room and floor you are assigned to, but you are welcome to explore the hotel and what we have to offer during your stay.

Below the message are "the rules" of the hotel:

1. Sleep. It's a hotel; enjoy the comforting accommodations provided to you each night and get a good night's rest.
2. There is to be no physical aggression between the residents. Weapons of any nature are not allowed on the hotel's premises.

What do you choose to do next? Do you listen to the advice and go back to sleep or do you explore your room, the floor, and the hotel?

----

Hotel Inferno has ten floors. Rather than counting upwards, the first floor, which is only known as floor 0, is the top floor and the tenth is the very bottom. The first floor is simply the lobby which contains a restaurant, a bar, a coffee and pastry shop, and the desk. The staff at the hotel is quiet and quite unhelpful when approached. Room changes are hard to come by and normally only happen within floors themselves rather than across the entire hotel. On the top floor a message over the elevator door reads "All hope abandon, ye who enter in.".

The rooms are the same on each floor. They all contain two queen sizes beds, two dressers, two desks, a three seat sofa that has a pull out bed, book shelves that contain exactly 100 books, and have a restroom to the side.

Each floor has a theme for the guests assigned into one of the rooms there. When guests come into the hotel, they are assigned a room at random, but a floor on purpose. Their lives before the hotel are what defines which floor they are assigned to. Whether they are driven by the lust, greed, anger, or anything else, they are condemned by the hotel's staff to share a floor with those who have committed the same offenses in their lives.

The floor that someone is assigned dictates their sleeping world. Each guest is subjected to to unavoidable dreams depending on their floor. It's up to each individual guest whether this dream is a nightmare or just a recurring nuisance. Sleep is unavoidable! Every guest in the hotel must sleep at least five out of seven nights.

The dreams are subject to the player of the character, but the main idea is broken down below (players come up with the dreams their character is subjected to on their own which is approved by the mods on the application. When someone receives an infrequent room change to a new floor, the dream will change to match.):

  • First Floor: Limbo
  • Second Floor: Lust
  • Third Floor: Gluttony
  • Fourth Floor: Greed
  • Fifth Floor: Anger
  • Sixth Floor: Heresy
  • Seventh Floor: Violent
  • Eight Floor: Fraud
  • Ninth Floor: Treachery

    Rules

    Jun. 12th, 2013 12:43 am
Rules are subject to change at any given time and any chances will be announced on the ooc community by the mods.

    1. Play nicely. Please treat each other with respect. If there's a problem then please speak to the other player about it. Communicate with respect.

This also includes not forcing ships, plots, or anything else onto a player. When they say they aren't interested, it means they aren't interested.

    2. Be active. Activity check is easy. Within the first week of a month, the mods will post an activity check in the OOC/players community that everyone is expected to reply to. Within the comments of the activity check post, you must provide a link to a thread from [community profile] ninecircles that has ten (10) replies from both your character and the one you're tagging with from the previous month.

All activity must be within the previous month for each check. The mods will email a player if they don't reply within a week to the activity check. They will only have five days to reply to the activity post with their link before they have been considered as to failing activity.

If you need to take a hiatus or a drop a character (or all together from the game), you may do so here. Hiatuses is explained there, but the gist is that the hiatus cannot be longer than two weeks and hiatuses cannot be excessive.

If a player or character fail activity check two months in a row or four months all together, they may be asked to leave the game (or drop a character or two) by the mods. We don't want to do this, so please try to fulfill activity as much as possible. If you're having trouble finding people to scene with, ask the mod and we'll try to work with you to help you out.

    3. Age isn't just a number. A player must be at least eighteen-years-old (18) cannotplay in the game. If someone who is under eighteen (18) is found playing, they will be permanently banned from the game.

Characters may be aged up to be eighteen-years-old (18), but if a character is under eighteen (18) without being aged up, they are not allowed to participate in threads or plots with adult/mature content.

    4. Do not godmod. Do not godmod anyone's character. This includes not physically moving or even attacking another character without permission. It also includes not having your character know something about another character or their lives that they shouldn't. This is called info-modding and is not allowed. If you're unsure if your character should know something, ask the other player involved prior to having them knowing the information. It's really simple to not godmod by asking another player for permission on anything questionable first.

    5. Tag adult content. Threads with with material that can be considered mature or triggering must be under cut and have proper warning and tags.

    6. Character limits are enforced. During the first month you're in the game, you are only allowed two characters. If both characters comply with activity and pass the activity check, then a player is allowed to apply for two more characters each month for a total of four (4) characters in the game.

No player is allowed to have more than one (1) character from a single fandom. This is to try to aid in players interacting with each other.

    7. Players are encouraged to create their own plots. Mods want the players to have a good time and play what they want so they are highly encouraged to create their own plots among themselves. However, all players should be in agreement to the plot and storyline.

There are some plots that do need mod approval. Please use your best judgement (and if in doubt, just run it by the mod before going through with it, please), but some plots that need mod approval are: death, maiming/extreme violence/torture, rape, and pregnancy (yes, there can be pregnancy in the game, but it's discussed more here on the FAQ page).

    FAQ

    Jun. 12th, 2013 12:43 am
Do I have to have read or love Dante's Inferno to play in the game?

No. Honestly, as long as you have a general knowledge of the levels of hell and read and know the game premise and rules, there's no reason you can't play. The mods won't know if you've even read the book unless you tell them. Everyone is welcome!

What's allowed in the bag that comes with a character to the hotel?

It can hold up to ten personal items. Clothes are provided for a character in the room upon their arrival. Weapons of any nature are not allowed.

Do the characters lost their powers (if they have any) upon arrival?

This can't be answered with a simple yes or no. They don't lose any powers technically, but they are not allowed to have weapons if their powers depending on this. This includes "mystical" weapons that a character normally has to conjure to use. If they're a psychic, they still are. If they're a mutual from X-Men, they still are. If a character has a wand, they still have one (a wand can be used as a weapon, but in theory it's not something like a sword that is only a weapon.). This has a catch-22 that some powers can be used violently if a character chooses to. Yes, the mods realize this which brings us to...

Violence is not permitted in the hotel, but my character is an angry, bad ass villain...

Have you ever heard of breaking the rules? Violence may not be permitted, but does that normally stop everyone all the time? No. Characters can break the rule. As long as the weapons aren't employed, characters can and no doubt will get into fights. Drama is encouraged! If every character was a good guy who never broke the rules, how boring would that be?

The dreams aren't listed in detail, how do I know what the character is dreaming of?

This is the psychological part of the game. The mods had thought of just giving the recurring dreams description and saying everyone must follow that model, but where's the real fun in that? There's many resources available online for those who are not familiar with the punishments in each level of hell of Dante's Inferno including the wikipedia page.

Basically, on the application, the potential player is asked to describe the dream for their own character. They must use the punishment from the level of hell that corresponds with the floor they choose as inspiration. In some cases, the player may choose to take the punishment literal, but others may choose to be imagative with the dream. As long as it's inspired by the level and the character's canon, the mods will accept it. Dreams cannot only change with mod permission and/or a floor change.

Since this is supposed to be the psychological part of the game, players are encouraged to dive into their character's psyche a bit and create a dream that would be a nightmare to them. They are encouraged to have the dreams be something more than a nuisance.

    Can my character change rooms?

Yes. Room changes to another floor is infrequent and includes a lengthy conversation with the mods before approved, but the mods will willingly and easily change characters within floors. Does your character want to room with their new bff that's down the hall now? Just reply on the room assignment page and ask the mods.

If your character wants to change rooms to another floor, you must discuss it with the mods. The dream will change and you must provide a reason why they would be moved and below on another floor now. The mods don't take this lightly as it's the nature of the game.

What happened to the characters in Dante's Inferno like Virgil, Cerberus, Phlegyas, and the other guards?

They are all here! They're all the NPC staff within the hotel. On the cast list there's a section for the NPCs.

    What does my character remember?

A character remembers everything from the canon point they are taken from. It's that simple. If you want to update the canon with new material as the canon is updated itself, then tell the mod and your character will be out of play for a week for a "week of sleep" where they are in a deep slumber in their room and wake up with the new knowledge and memories.

What if my character is underage in canon?

Characters that players want to play in adult situations are encouraged to be aged up. Any character that is not stated to be eighteen-years-old (18) is not allowed to participate in any adult threads. While the age might be upped, everything in canon is still the same. There is absolutely no reason to fill in any "gap" to explain the new age. A character also should not realize they may have been aged so they shouldn't be wondering what happened that they went to sleep 16 and then woke up in a hotel at 18.

How does my character survive if they have no job?

Everything is provided by the hotel for a guest. There's no reason for them to get a job or make money. There's no money within the hotel itself, actually. They ask and then they receive if it's within reason.

(Due to the fact it is a hotel, it's very unlikely there is enough work to go around. So, no one works to keep it simple for the players.)

    Can a character get pregnant?

Yes they can. However, this is subject to mod approval and the mods will limit and restrict the amount of pregnancies in the game at one time. Since the rooms only have two queen sized beds, clearly there's no place for a baby, but in the hotel (on floor 0/the lobby) there is a nursery that only those who need it are shown originally. Babies born in the hotel are taken the nursery to be raised. Parents can visit their children, but they do not raise them. The staff raises the children.

If you want a pregnancy to end in a miscarriage or abortion (which can happen in the infirmary of the hotel), the mods still must be consulted. For any pregnancy, timelines and results and consequences are expected to be supplied to the mods upon asking for permission. The mods want to know you have taken all things into account and know how this will effect the characters involved.

If something isn't answered here? Ask away! The mods are more than willing to answer questions and will update this regularly with questions they think may need to be answered for everyone.

    Cast List

    Jun. 12th, 2013 12:41 am
    Taken Characters:

    NPCs:

All NPCs are played at the mod discretion. They are to be played only be players with permission or the mods themselves. The mods took a select characters from Dante's Inferno, tweaked them for the setting. and gave them a place/job at the hotel. None of the NPCs have PBs or icons. They use a generic game icon instead, but their appearances are described vaguely below.

Virgil - The only staff member who appears to be helpful to most. He doesn't mind answering questions, but sometime his answers aren't as straight forward as one would like. He is found behind the counter in the lobby nearly day and night, seemingly providing guidance to the guests of the hotel. He's a middle-aged man with dark hair of average height and built.

Charon - An old man who is found in the lobby of hotel. He's short and wrinkled with white hair and a beard. He's found at a stand near the elevator of the hotel, but never makes eye contact with the guests.

Minos - He dwells on the second floor of the hotel. He's not a maid, but he's seem roaming around the floor like a guard of sorts. He's the person those on the second floor would go to with problems within the hotel. He's far from friendly and normally seems angry at simply being spoken to by a guest. He's a tall, burly man with black hair.

Phlegyas - He works in the cafe of the hotel in the lobby/floor 0. He's the owner/manager of the cafe and serves the guests with a grimace. Never smiling or being friendly, his food and beverages though speak for themselves to be tasty and delicious. His cafe can be ordered as room service, but he reserves the right to deny a guest when he sees fit. He's a man of average height and bit on the skinny side with blond hair.

Nessus - Finally, someone who seems to have authority here! He's the manager of the hotel, but often sticks to the middle floors of the hotel itself. He almost never speaks, but when he does it's inquiring of a guests' sleep. As a tall man, he's stocky and quite agile anyway. He always wears a tailored suit.

Geryon - Skinny and lanky, she often seems to fade in and out of the shadows of the seventh and eighth floors of the hotel acting as a maid. Honestly, no one should trust her. She's known to look through guests' belongings. However, she can be considered as pretty with her frame and blond hair.

Antaeus - She's a tall and imposing woman who hangs around the eighth and ninth floors. She acts as a manager, checking in on guests. She has shown brown hair cropped to just below her ears.

    Hiatuses:

There's some simple guidelines to hiatuses.

  • Hiatuses cannot be more than two weeks at any given time (however, the mods will taken into account circumstances. If you contact the mods saying you have no internet access for awhile, you will likely get an extension, but if that you're bogged down with schoolwork or work itself, then likely you won't be permitted any longer than two weeks).
  • Excessive hiatuses are not allowed. You should be able to pass at least two out of every three month's activity with no issue (again circumstances will be taken into consideration.)
  • Normally, hiatuses are not granted for just a weekend. If you cannot tag for two or three days, don't worry about taking a hiatus or checking in as long as you can pass activity. If the time you won't be tagging surpasses three or four days, it's encouraged that you at least let the mods know what's going on.
  • Hiatuses cannot be asked for the week of the activity check for the previous month. If you didn't pass activity, you didn't pass activity. Please don't try to stake by with "now I'm on hiatus". It doesn't work that way.

  • To go on hiatus, comment to this post with your reason (you don't have to get into details or give us any information you don't feel comfortable. We are not looking for an essay or story of your life here, please.), the time frame of the hiatus, and your character(s) that it will be effecting. The mods will watch and monitor this page come activity and if you're on hiatus, you don't have to comment on the activity post.

    Drops:

We don't need a reason. This is your choice. If you want to drop a character or all together from the game, just please drop a comment here and we'll remove your character(s) or you from the game. It's that simple.
