Chapter: 1/1
Rating: PG-PG13ish
Beta: None - read at your own risk
Warning: TW: Depression
Characters: Nameless female OC
Summary: Short ficlet about what happens when someone starts losing faith.
She couldn't remember when it was she stopped making wishes, but she remembered why.
Things had gotten progressively worse over those months, and gradually, she stopped believing she had any luck left. Besides, she figured that, at this point, she should save any chances she DID have left for things she might really need.
So she stopped saying "I wish..." randomly, as most people say, making small wishes for things like "that noise to shut up" or "my kid would stop misbehaving in public" or "my husband would stop leaving his socks all over the floor."
Instead, whenever she found herself about to make such a wish, even just in her head, she would whisper, "No wishes..." to herself, over and over again, until the urge to make a wish passed. She even did it when she heard others say "I wish..." to remind herself.
She'd never realised just how many of those little wishes people made in a day until she started doing that.
Eventually, she got to the point where she caught herself more often than not, determinedly whispering her mantra as soon as the urge hit, ruthlessly squashing every little (and a few bigger, but not totally necessary,) wishes, as soon as they came into her head, erasing those magic little words from her vocabulary with a grim efficiency.
Maybe soon, she thought, she could do the same with her hopes and dreams.
