While choosing a name for Let’s Talk Palestine’s community of monthly supporters, our team went between a few options before settling on Karm.
Originally the Palestinian word for “vineyard”, el-Karm (الكرم) now refers more generally to farm or crop land. But it holds deeper significance:
- Families often visit their Karm for communal and celebratory occasions – it’s a place to gather.
- Agriculture is strongly linked to Palestinian identity, particularly as it keeps people rooted to their land, steadfast (Sumud).
- El-Karm is also a primary source of livelihood for families and communities, nourishing and providing for them.
- Under occupation, Palestinian revolutionaries and resistance fighters use el-Karm for hiding. The crops provide a rare refuge, far from the eyes of the occupier.
With this in mind, we would be honored to have you in our Karm Community. This will be a place to share art and ideas, from us to you and vice versa! It’s the community of members who help make it possible for us to educate tens of millions of people.
