Oi Suomi!

This was huge when it was released. Sanni had just graduated from high school, or was still a high schooler at the time this came out and everyone was all 'ooh' and 'aah' over her composition and writing skills despite her young age. But yeah, this song is about break up, when the couple can't really be referred to as one entity any more. I wasn't quite sure whether to translate it as 'we' or 'us' (there is no difference in Finnish), but couples usually refer to themselves as 'we', so I used that.

Finland's response to Justin Bieber (the English-speaking Finnish response would be Isac Elliot) Teenage girls really like him. I personally think he can sing but his music isn't really my thing? Except for this song, it's quite catchy. The lyrics are really bad though, I cringed a bit, not gonna lie. When I first saw the music video I thought the song would be about how being different doesn't matter, you know, in a social setting. Ended up being a teenage love song to a girl completely out of his league.

After almost a year away, I'm back! A lot's happened, first it was school, then personal life got in the way. But I will try to translate more Finnish songs since there's quite a bit of good music coming out of Finland these days. Here's a song by Jonna Tervomaa to begin with. This song is essentially her wishing for life to continue as it is or even better. It's just about living your life like you mean it.

The lyrics of Kotiteollisuus are not very upbeat but many think they're well done. So give them a try, yeah? The singer/songwriter of the band, Jouni Hynynen has done lyrics for several other Finnish artists as well, and he's very well-respected in that area.

 This time is a bit different since I haven't actually translated this song by myself. I just googled the lyrics to this song and came across an accurate translation, so....yeah.

Pernilla Karlsson's När jag blundar (When I Close My Eyes) is this year's Finland's Eurovision song. The first time you hear the song, it might seem a bit boring, but the lyrics really are pretty. Of course, many Finns are getting angry at her for singing in Swedish instead of Finnish. I personally don't see anything wrong with that, Swedish is our second official language after all. Sweden and Swedish is a part of our history, so it makes sense to have a song in that language represent us in Eurovision.

Jonna Tervomaa was huge in the early 2000s, and some of her songs are still played on the radio. People do know of her, so in a way she's become one of those evergreen stars of Finnish music. This is a song about staying in a moment and wanting to not tackle the consequences until later.
