olivermoss: (Kraken)
Remember when I was supposed to go for an event like a month ago? Train was literally boarding when I had to cancel. The one thing the agent could do for me was to switch my ticket to today, and only today. I said sure. So, I just random had a round trip ticket for today.

My plans for the trip were: Finally see Gas Works Park, go to Gas Works Brewing, wander areas far from like Pike's Market and all that.

There is a lot of Seattle, and tragically I've seen very little of it.

Photo post and general DW catch up later, I am exhausted. But, I did go to the steampunky park:

Image

Then I sat in an adirondack chair drinking citrus sours, watching sea planes land and writing werewolf porn in a brewpub partially owned by a Kraken goalie.

Okay, I am going to go fall over dead.

So, today was a first. I was doing one of the pre-Pride city clean ups today. Arms are freaking tired from polishing a 'high need area'. Had some people see me working and tried to demand that I go clean up some trash they saw. I just waved at them and kept working in my section, and then they, well, treated me like I had communication difficulties and and needed stronger instruction. The more I ignored them, the more insistent they got, but they did eventually leave me alone.

I could hear them just fine, I was just paying attention to the werewolf porn audiobook I was listening to. If they had approached me differently, like just letting me know about some stuff, I would have bothered to pause, but they were being giant assholes.

When I did go around the corner, the mess was... materials that my type of volunteer does not interact with. There were at least three types of nope in that pile. I did go and report it to the team leaders.

I'm a volunteer who can walk away. The assholes seemed to think I was part of some vocational or rehab program, and imagine if I was that? People experiencing difficulties should be treated well, not like servants. Fuck is wrong with people? Now I wish I had paused so I could have told them to fuck off in no uncertain terms. I just defaulted to my typical east coaster refusal to engage.

Not sure when I will get to it. If this photoshoot also goes sideways... IDK, a sage cleanse? Offering to photography gods?

Oh, didn't mention in my other post, but a structure in Forest Park, along the trail I was on, burned down that morning.
olivermoss: (Default)
There is a observation deck in Forest Park that is rentable, and popular for weddings. However, it's not rentable all day, there is a chunk in the middle when no one gets dibs. I was having trouble writing so I grabbed my stuff and planned out a 3 hour hike, and hit up the viewpoint. Also, my path would take me over a bridge I'd only been under.

I get there after 2 hours of walking, I'd planned a loop with the longer bit first. The wedding party was still there doing pictures. I took out my book to wait. They were well over time, but I didn't care. Myself and other hikers were on the trail, waiting for our turn.

I didn't pay attention to how much time had passed, until I heard someone call out 'Want to do a coordinated hand-off?'

Long story short... shorter... the parties coordinated to block the trail and not allow us in. The morning wedding ran long, the afternoon wedding arrived early, and the decided to coordinate to block it entirely from the dirty hikers, even though neither had it rented for that part of the afternoon because you specifically can't. The second group was super aggro, too, trying to block the nearby trail so like no on could even go past it. Some of the party for the second group really thought at first they could just shut down the whole area and block the fucking Wildwood Trail in Forest Park on a weekend.

I can, and will, push through when people are trying to take over public land, but there were so many, and so aggro and I just wasn't up for trying. So, me and the others just never got access. We were, eventually, let by at least.

What the fuck is wrong with people? We let the first group have it for like an extra 40 minutes, no one bothered them, and it was their idea to do the weird 'coordinated handoff'. Just... why?

No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

I'd planned to have lunch there on the deck, bit of banana bread and peanut butter. I'll have to try another day. The second group was loud AF so I kept walking until I could at least drown it out with headphones and finally had my lunch. Then, I was off to Barbara Walker Crossing, the bridge on my way out.

I need to pick a 3rd bridge and so if the day goes sideways again.

Anyway, bridge:

* Two PWHL teams are moving to new arenas! Two of the OG teams, from before the league took off, teams with arena deals made before a single game was played and no one knew what would happen, are moving. Ottawa Charge are moving to the Canadian Tire Center, where the NHL team plays. Boston Fleet, a dominant team, are moving into Boston! Slightly smaller arena, but no longer out in Lowell.

Is is just the Fleet and the Victoire not in NHL-sized venues?

* Ian Kennedy continues to be a blight on PWHL coverage. He put out a big article bemoaning that the Pdub aren't honoring earlier women's teams by using old team names, like the WNBA and other sports are doing. Listen, I love that the name of the historical Seattle women's hockey team is the Seattle Vamps. I'd love to see some slightly grunge goth branding around all that, pretend that 'vamps' is short for 'vampires'. But like, that's not what 'vamps' means in oldey timey lingo. We cannot call a Pdub team The Vamps. We can do reverse retro jerseys and history nights, but there is a reason why he didn't get into what some of the old teams were actually fucking called.

* I am not going to survive how annoying journalists trying to keep their clicks up in offseason are going to be. Go away and let me enjoy clips of my favorite player being a kid's hockey coach up in Nova Scotia.

* In Kraken Territory - local news is: Vince Dunn was a dumbass who posted pictures of himself parachuting and then deleted them; NHL players under contracts aren't typically allowed to recreationally throw themselves from planes. One of our goalies is getting married in some European castle this weekend, meaning we get pictures of squids in nice suits. Melly is off doing his offseason coaching stuff with his lifelong friend CJ Jackson; he uses his salary to subsidize hockey clinics for kids that he runs in the town they're from. Melly is the one unsigned player for next season; he's had a qualifying offer but like we want to see what the actually contract looks like and if it's 2-way or not. We've got a new squid who is tied for tallest NHL player in history; fandom is being very normal about this.

Also, thank you Flyers for fucking over one of our divisional opponents.

* In UFA land, still waiting to see where Tolvy and Prokop land.

Did some photowalking today. I will make a proper photography post later. But, I want to talk about something I deal with on some of those shoots, and wow, today it was intense. Anyway trigger warning - talk of suicide prevention programs and projects - under the cut. Read more... )

I just watched the Luke Prokop documentary. A high point in which is getting signed by his hometown franchise, Edmonton Oilers, and playing for their AHL team. They signed him knowing he's gay. He's finally getting proper development and feels like he's being taken seriously as a prospect. He's played with the Oilers in preseason games, which means playing with some of the biggest names in hockey.

The coda to all this, which happened after the doc wrapped I assume, is that the Oilers also didn't re-sign him. He's UFA, and currently unsigned. So, the Oilers acquired him and treated him seriously as a prospect for their NHL team, then switched to their new coach Mike Babcock, and then he was not re-signed. Now, we don't know how this played out. Luke might have seen the hiring of Babcock and decided to GTFO, or maybe he feels he has a better chance to move up in a different franchise. But his story is very much an unfinished one and it's a bit strange for this doc to drop while he's on the market and has been for a bit.

Again, we don't know what is up. He might have multiple offers and is deciding. I obviously think he'd be a great fit for Coachella Valley, and hey we just hired staff specifically to develop defencemen! But the doc tries to end on a happy note, when in reality things are deeply unresolved.

I check Luke's Elite Prospects page daily, but if he finally gets a contract somewhere I'll probably hear about it elsewhere first.

And, POV of trying to write in a Portland brewpub on a summer night:
Image

I actually took that last shot because I got bothered by a fucking Elon Musk fanboy in Lucky Lab of all places. Rather than explain Lucky Lab, I figure I'd just take a picture. I took this after he'd gone to be a creep on the patio, he is not in the shot. Anyway, fucking weirdo was trying to get people to make eye contact with him. I am from the suburbs of Connecticut outside New York City. You cannot make me acknowledge your existence unless I choose to. He was just like trying to get people to engage with him and I was not having it.

I don't know what is wrong with some people, and I don't want to know

* One of the shows I am watching is a playthrough of Parasite Eve on youtube. I saw a scrap of a video essay on it and immediately wanted to play it, but it doesn't have a PC port and I no longer have my PS2. I haven't found a great playthrough, but it's something.

I've heard of the game, but realizing it was a horror-RPG from Squaresoft set in 1990s NYC... yeah, you had me at 'pixel art NYC' It's deeply relevant to my interests. I'd rather be playing, but I'm not getting getting a console and tracking down working discs just for one game.

* I am watching Criminal Minds because of Connor Storrie. I am curious if it was always this bad? I used to love the show, but stopped watching during a bunch of weirdness going on behind the scenes and also the show's realism tanked.

Some of the dialogue on the show would have made sense back in season 1 or 2, back in that era. Now it's just nonsense. When the very forensics-focused shows were taking off, forensic science was genuinely going through a period of 'figuring things out'. Lots of innovation, what should be SOP, etc. The show acts like it's still in that era and it's not.

Also, serial killers were more of a thing back then. Like there was this whole serial killer spike and they are super rare these days.

Is the current show a watered down version of something that worked in the mid 00's, or was it always this sloppy? I might watch try to watch a very early eps just to see, but if I do I might fall in love with Spencer Reid again and cry over how his character was developed.

*checks IMDB*

He was still on the show until last year? He did 325 episodes?? Holy shit

* Glad it's not just me. Someone was asking on the mm romance subreddit about finding reviewers and the consensus is that's finding one is a mess. A highly upvoted comment said "When they all rave about one book multiple times something's up". Basically, it's all algo bait.
olivermoss: (Default)
* Tyria Pride 2026 is over. We raised $33,604.47, over twice last year. Holy shit. A bit more money will be coming in, but that's roughly it for this year. goddamn.

Money goes to Rainbow Railroad, a charity that helps LGBT+ people who live in areas were it's dangerous/illegal, and resettles them in safer areas.

My guild raised the 3rd most money of all the guilds, beating out LALA which is a massive guild. Our tiny guild beat out one of the largest GW2 communities. And people say we're JUNK, call us JUNK all the time.

* I like write-ins for a lot of reasons. But I need people at them to SHUT UP about using AI to make book covers. Fuck, if you're going to pull that shit at least be ashamed of it.
olivermoss: (Default)
* We did pick up one FA today, more likely for the Firebirds than the Kraken... but he a 6'9 boy, Curtis Douglas. He big. And he likes to take part in initiatives to start conversations about mental health.

Also, in hockey fandom is it so wholesome when a player goes to a new team and someone makes a primer on him for fans of the new team. Curtis Douglas primer. They are so sad to lose him and they make a power point about it.

* We used to have a big player on the team, nicknamed Big Rig. Biggest player in franchise history. We lost him today to the Canucks.

Here is both Curtis Douglas and Big Rig back when they were both prospects for the Stars:
Image

Which is which? 2 is Big Rig and 1 is the new squid.

Curtis dwarfs Big Rig, who makes Bobby McMann look tiny. Dear God...

(I need a picture of him next to Vince Dunn)

* Marchment to the Sharks? Are they just throwing money at his because of his dad? Wow, that's a weird fit. He likes to start shit and not finish it. A few of the Kraken injuries last year were due to his stint with us. He started shit and hid behind our top scorer, and then our top scorer was out almost half the season.

Sharks fans are like 'oh, he's a vet, he'll protect the kids!' No, I promise you, no. The way he'll help the kids is by giving their PK teams lots of work outs. His stats are good, but like, there is a lot more to a player than stats.

When Mush went to Seattle last year, I don't know if that was a Francis or Botteril deal. If I knew for sure it was Ron Francis, and I think it was based on timing, I'd be even more happy for next season.

* Jaden Schwartz to the Avs. He was an OG Kraken, first to sign with the team in free agency and reportedly wanted to stay. Sad to see and a lot of fans are upset. He just made no sense for the current state of our roster.

No movement on Oleksiak, Tolvanen or Murray yet. Thought Tolvy would go fast. Not sure what is up with Murray.

Update: Oleksiak to Vancouver for two years at 5 mill. That is insane. Good on him. Maybe he'll be great up there. For the previous season on the Kraken he was invisible most of the year and seemed to finally wake up in the last few weeks. Not sure why.

Wow, we didn't pay him that much. I would not have been surprised if he'd slip to AHL after last year. But, I don't know the BTS of the situation, maybe there was a good reason he was a ghost for us most of last year and that's been resolved.

* As a newer fan which players I am attached to is very different from the more established fans. Hard day for people who are long time fans. My faves are all very likely to stay in Seattle.

* Luke Prokop is UFA, so I am keeping an eye on him and hoping. Our AHL team deserves nice things, and we could use defensive defenceman depth.

* Fuck, Blues did it. They signed Dube. Morale with that club is low and they are so desperate they sign him? That sucks. Don't want to deal with VGK 2.0 on top of VGK.

* Sharks throwing money around on 4 and 5 year contracts like they aren't worried about the big re-signings in two years. Darnell Nurse?

* Can someone explain to our fanbase that we have an AHL team and we also need to get them players? We are about to do terrible things to their roster.

* At Kraken development camp we make sure players have essential skills, like making sure our goalie prospects can shoot the puck.

I signed up for a Solve community clean up event pretty far from me, but it worked with my schedule. Way out in east Portland. But, the organizer never showed.

This was a partnered event. Some events Solve just does on their own, they are supply volunteers to other projects, like the cemetery restoration project. Yesterday's event turned out to be partnered with a program aimed at reducing gun violence, and one thing they've found that's effective in that is making sure kids actually have places to play, good environments, so they can build community and social skills. I ran into a guy there from the org we were supposed to be helping and we had a nice chat about how all that works.

One guy who showed had his own equipment and went to work. Some volunteers just get their own set of gloves and things after a while. I'd have stayed and done some de-trashing by hand, but due to my food allergies I do not touch garbage without a grabber. So I was like 'yeah... I get how that works. My own town had a big reckoning with that after an incident... ok bye!'

I felt bad, but without Solve showing with equipment, risking an allergic reaction would suck. I think Solve is usually solid and hopefully this doesn't happen again, but also I might buy some disposable gloves just in case.

My next scheduled event is at... Darcelle XV Plaza! It's kinda funny, we just opened it! But also it's in downtown so, yeah, by next week it will probably need some polish.
olivermoss: (Default)
* Torrent Abbey Murphy's been invited to development camp with the Edmonton Oilers. Not the first time women have been invites to dev camps, but it's interesting that they invited 3. I wish the Kraken invited some Torrent in, but we also run a smaller camp. We're building a second iceplex, so maybe next year when we have access to a larger space.

* Looks like the Kraken are letting all UFAs walk, which I expected. This helps our roster a lot. We could still do with removing one or two names, especially if we are in talks with any UFAs from other teams. Even without another move, we've got a better roster than last year. Now if we don't have half of them out for half the season... Next year the squids could surprise some people. Or the universe will get keeping beating us with a stick while the Sharks and Panthers roll over everything, while Bettman keeps feeding us a schedule of roadie back to backs where the second game is an afternoon game.

But McMann re-signed with us because he likes Botts' plans and also our prospect pool, and that's a good feeling. But if we can offload just one contract we can pull up the kids easier and would have a good balance of vets and rookies. Some of the players just starting to pop are from our very first draft.

Is free on Amazon Prime right now if you want to check it out.

My non-spoiler review is that there is a lot that's good about it, but I don't recommend it. It's rated extremely highly by critics and audiences, so ignoring my take and checking it out for yourself is likely a better option.

Ending spoilers )

Vindication! Someone else in my book club had the same experience as me. They read another m/m book with the same premise as Wolf at the Door and they had DNF'd it. A couple of people also though they'd DNF'd it and were like 'this is not the same book'. I need to figure out what that other book is.

I have a strong suspicion that it's an older book than the Charlie Adhara one.

Month isn't over yet but... what do you mean we've raised over $26k???

Aw, the new squids say they're excited to go to Seattle for development camp. Yeah, we're sending y'all to the middle of Alaska. Last year some of you got chased by a bear.

Welcome to the franchise.
