the importance of friendship

importance of friendshipSome of us have had friends since we were toddlers. Long, abiding friendships that started while we were still in diapers and continued throughout school, through marriages, and through starting our own families. But just as precious are those friendships that we find later in life, where it feels as though we have known each other our entire lives because we “just clicked.”

So, why is friendship important?

Life is hard. In today’s world, we face a myriad of difficulties from illness to job loss. One of the many blessings the Lord gives us is the blessing of friends. Someone to come alongside us when times are tough. Someone to be there for us, and to pray for and with us.

But it’s not only friendship, but quality friendship that matters. Proverbs 18:24 has much to say about that very topic.

Proverbs 18 24

What exactly is an unreliable friend? Here are some qualifications of being unreliable:

undependable, deceptive, untrustworthy, capricious, false, unstable, and fickle.

Not good qualities for a friend. Proverbs 18:24 tells us that if we have friends that exhibit those traits, we are in danger of coming to ruin. However, on the flipside is a friend who is loyal, steadfast, devoted, faith, constant, abiding, and true. We should also strive to be this type of friend to our friends.

Proverbs 27 9

In addition, Proverbs 27:9 tells us that a sweet friendship refreshes the soul. In these days of busyness, chaos, difficult times, and so many unknowns, refreshment of the soul is more than welcome.

So, what are some qualities of a good friend?

  • They are avid prayer warriors and aren’t afraid to pray for and with you wherever and whenever necessary.
  • They are an ardent cheerleader and support you, even if your dreams are a bit crazy at times.
  • They gently tell you in the kindness and humility if necessary if there’s something amiss that you need to address.
  • They promote an evenly-matched (or close-to-evenly-matched) friendship (as we all have times when we are the more “needy” one). Meaning they are there for you and you are there for them and it’s not one-sided.
  • They are a good listener. We’ve all been around those folks that only talk about themselves or their problems. All. The. Time. Good friends talk as well as listen.
  • They have integrity. Nothing is worse than discovering a close friend has betrayed you.
  • They stand up for you in times of battle. When the bully is knocking down your door, your close friend is there to take on the enemy with you.
  • They help you strive to be your best self. In Proverbs 27:17, we are reminded that iron sharpens iron. A quality friend rejoices with you when you rejoice, and weeps with you when you weep (Romans 12:15). They spur you on and offer encouragement.

    Proverbs 27 17

Most of us have several friends and acquaintances, but who do we call in those times of need—those times of struggle—those times when no one else quite “gets us”? Those are the friends that God placed in our lives as gifts.

The ones we are blessed to have.

Happy Independence Day!

Image

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea! source

As we celebrate Independence Day, I’m so grateful to live in a country with so many freedoms. Those of us, myself included, who have never lived outside of the U.S. cannot fully comprehend just how blessed we are to live in this great nation. May we never take for granted the liberties we wake up to each day—liberties our ancestors fought and died for. May we never forget their great sacrifice.

Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” The thought of losing the freedoms our remarkable country has enjoyed for so many years is frightening. I want my children to continue to know—and my future grandchildren to know—what it’s like to live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave”.

As we celebrate today, may we give thanks to the Lord who granted us the privilege of living in America. May we continue to fight for America and may we never forget that freedom is only “one generation away from extinction”.

From our family to yours…have a safe and fun Fourth of July!

3 changes to make in 2026

Image

It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through 2026. Here are three suggestions for changes to make beginning now for you, for your health, and for others.

For you…

Spend more time with the Lord. I have made it my goal to spend time with the Lord first thing when I wake up. I know myself too well that with all of the busyness of the day that He has to be my first priority. As such, the first words that I utter when I wake is “Thank You, Lord, for another day. Please help me to glorify You, be a blessing to others, and please keep my family and me healthy and safe.”

bed-bible-book-bindings-935944(2)

Don’t only take your time reading through a book in the Bible, but if you have a Bible with commentary, read those notes as well to fully understand what God is trying to tell us through His Word. Go as slowly as you need to in order to understand what you are reading.

Start a prayer notebook. Add in specific prayers for those you care about, plus any strangers (such as someone you read about online who just lost a family member). Also be sure to add in prayers that the Lord has answered.

Listen to upbeat music. There is so much negativity in some of the current songs these days. However, there is also an abundance of options for positive and hopeful music.  Find a local Christian radio station or stream some songs and add them to your playlist.

Cut back on news consumption. Watching and reading too much news can be overwhelming, discouraging, and toxic. Yes, we need to be in the know, but it should not be the place where we spend most of our day.

For your health…

Eating healthy is an important goal. But if you plan to make it a goal just to “eat healthier,” you may not succeed. Instead, choose one or two food items to add to your menu that you are able to commit to eating. For instance, I detest broccoli – always have. But I determined last year to incorporate it into my diet slowly and intermittently. So far, my plan has been successful.

healthy food

Revamp the typical resolutions. Losing weight and getting fit are at the top of New Year’s Resolutions. But what about in the middle of the year? Instead of just saying you’ll lose weight and get fit, make your goal specific and manageable. Plan to go to the gym three times a week or take one new class for the next six weeks. Or plan to incorporate 20 minutes of weight training twice a week. One of my goals last year was to be sure I spent ample time stretching after a workout. Too often, sufficient stretching would (unwisely) be the thing that would suffer if I ran out of time.

Listen to music while working out. It will up your game and make the time go faster.

Offer yourself small rewards at several junctures of attaining your goals. You made it through the first session of kickboxing. How about that new workout top you’ve been eyeing as a reward? Just be sure not to make sugary treats your motivation for working out. 🙂

Declutter your life and your home. Again, start small and aim to declutter one manageable area at a time.

Speaking of decluttering? Sometimes, sadly, it’s time to weed your garden of friends as well.

Rethink friendships. God tells us in His Word to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). Thankfully, He doesn’t say we have to hang out with toxic people—those who cause us undue distress or are cruel or unkind. If you have someone in your life who is jealous, hateful, abusive, a gossiper, or any other type of negative person, it’s time to spend less time with them. Not to be unkind or to retaliate, but to distance yourself from that person and the negative effects they can have on you and your health. Be sure to pray for the relationship, how you handle it, and for your friend.

Learn to say no. Easier said than done (and one that is personally difficult for me), but sometimes we have to cut back on the massive amount of things we undertake on a daily basis. Pray for God’s wisdom this year, that He would show you what to cut back on and not feel guilty about it.

For others… (click on the links for specific suggestions).

poem for blog (right one).png

Volunteer. Volunteering can range from coaching a soccer team for kids to delivering meals to the elderly to teaching Sunday School.

Bless others in unexpected ways and perform random acts of kindness.

Encourage others.

Help those going through a difficult time.

Instill in your children the importance of serving others.

What are some changes you’re deciding to make as we pass the halfway mark of 2026?

how to become an undercover prayer warrior

Image

One of the Christian romance subgenres I write in (besides historical romance and contemporary romance) is Christian romantic suspense. It’s especially fun to write about characters who go undercover, and the tension builds as covert operations are planned to catch the bad guys.

Image

I also enjoy watching suspense movies, and my grandpa was a retired police officer for the San Diego Police Department. Perhaps that’s why I decided to go undercover myself.

I’ve recently felt God prompting me into my own incognito activities. As such, I’ve become an undercover prayer warrior.

Image

The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. To continually offer our requests to the Lord. Praying for family and friends foremost is a given. We can easily be an undercover prayer warrior for those who mean the most to us.

Image

What about adding strangers to the list? People who don’t even know we’re praying for them? And just how do we become an undercover prayer warrior? Below are five ways.

1. Keep your eyes open. There’s a woman I see each time I’m utilizing the treadmill at my local gym. A somber expression continually lines her face. I’ve never seen her smile. Not once. Not when the machine she wanted was available, and certainly not to return a smile. This woman became my mission. Each time I see her, I pray earnestly for her. I pray for whatever struggles she is facing. I pray for joy and peace in her life. And I pray that if she doesn’t know the Lord, she would someday come to know Him.

Had I not been keeping my eyes open, I may not have noticed this woman and had the privilege to pray for her.

2. Keep your ears open. Ambulance sirens? Emergency helicopter? Both denote that someone is injured, or may even be possibly fighting for his or her life. Whenever our family hears either of those sounds, we stop what we’re doing and immediately pray for those who are being transported. We also pray that the Lord would provide wisdom and guide the doctor’s hands as he or she perform any necessary medical procedures.

Image

3. Check out the congregation. Each Sunday in church, I make it my mission to pray for both those whom I know and those who are strangers in my congregation. As I’m sitting in the sanctuary, I notice the couple whose marriage is struggling. The single dad who’s striving to raise his two children on his own—and his tween daughter who has fallen into the wrong crowd. I see the parents whose son struggles with severe learning disabilities. And the woman who just lost her husband.

Some weeks, I find new people in the congregation to pray for, other times, I pray for the same ones. But none of them know I’m lifting their concerns to our Heavenly Father.

4. Keep your heart open. Whenever I pass by the hospital or local cancer center, I pray for those who are receiving treatment. I pray for God’s healing, and that He would make Himself known to those who don’t yet know Him. It’s beyond difficult to struggle with an illness, especially one that could be terminal. Prayer support is the most important thing we can offer someone.

Image

5. Keep your mind open. Some of the hardest people to pray for are those who are unkind. I experienced some unkindness recently from a woman in desperate need of prayer. I didn’t necessarily want to pray for this meanie, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I had to keep an open mind and pray for this person. (Matthew 5:43-47)

So become God’s undercover prayer warrior. Slip into detective mode and…

  • Pray for that exhausted mom in front of you at the grocery store with the seven children.
  • Pray for the clerk at the department store or the waitress at your favorite restaurant.
  • Pray for the man in front of you at the doctor’s office who has just been told to go to the E.R. because he may be having a heart attack.
  • Scan the newspaper and pray for comfort for the families of those who have recently passed away.
  • Pray for those seeking treatment in hospitals and cancer centers.
  • Pray for those in jails and prisons.
  • Pray for those in drug treatment facilities attempting to overcome addictions.
  • Pray as you pass by the local pregnancy center for the workers and for those who are considering abortion that they would choose life. Pray for the brave moms who might be considering adoption, and pray for the adoptive families who seek to give a child a forever home.

And the list goes on.

God always hears each and every prayer we pray.

Why not bless someone today with your prayers?

Happy Release Day to Blueprint for Love!

Image

Today is the big day! Blueprint for Love releases in both ebook and paperback. One of the things I love about this book is that it’s a fun, enjoyable Christian rom-com set in a quirky small town. It is a rivals-to-more, hilarious book with tender romance between two very stubborn individuals. But Blueprint for Love also gives us a glimpse into the difficulty of being a caregiver for someone recovering from a life-threatening health event.

Blueprint for Love can be read as a standalone, but is better enjoyed with the entire series. It’s on sale for $2.99 for the special new release price for a few more days. Read on for the blurb and check out the video here.

He’s a grumpy contractor.
She’s a bubbly interior designer.
Will an unexpected alliance be the blueprint for love?

Eager to prove herself to her demanding boss, Jeanette Wertz travels to Cloverdale Falls with the hopes that helping renovate the local B&B will boost her interior design career. She never imagined the grumpy man she unexpectedly meets on the first day, when her car breaks down on Main Street, is the same man she’ll be working with on the renovations.

When her every suggestion meets resistance, Jeanette fears she’ll never accomplish her assignment in time to meet the deadline. An assignment that could cost her the job of her dreams.

Cameron Krausman enjoys running the family business, but what he doesn’t enjoy is going toe-to-toe with a pretty but opinionated interior designer who has an alternative suggestion for every one of his recommendations. Not only

must Cameron help his dad recover from a near-fatal health event, but he must now also contend with Jeanette Wertz and her countless ideas.

When differences morph into friendly bets—most of which Cameron loses—things begin to slowly change between the two rivals. Can a series of competitions and an old building in desperate need of an update be enough to turn rivalry into romance?

5 ways to be a better listener

Image

Someone once mentioned that the reason we have one mouth and two ears is because listening is more important than speaking. I’m not sure who coined that, but there’s definitely some truth to it. In a world filled with the static of people constantly talking, many times about themselves, how can we become better listeners? How can we really hear what someone has to say?

Below are five ways to become a better listener.

Be an eager listener. In James 1:19, we are told to be quick to listen and slow to speak.

Image

Make sure you have time to listen. If we are unable to listen to someone at the moment they need us to do so, respectfully ask them if they could give us a minute and then we will be “all ears”.

Genuinely invest yourself in the conversation. To be an active listener who genuinely cares about what the other person is saying, we have to be invested in what the other person is saying. There’s a new term called “phubbing” where a person snubs the other person and instead focuses solely on their phone. Not exactly the definition of listening. Neither is choosing the computer, TV, or newspaper when someone is attempting to carry on a conversation with you.

Give full attention to the person speaking. To expound on the suggestion above, have you ever chatted with someone who doesn’t maintain any eye contact? To be a more effective listener, eye contact is crucial.

Don’t interrupt. We’ve all met that person who has so much to say that they have little patience in waiting to say it. To be a better listener, we must avoid the temptation of interrupting.

While listening is not always easy for a variety of reasons, doing so is critical for healthy relationships. It also gives us the opportunity to pray for others if they have needs, helps us to get to know someone better, and is an excellent way to practice putting others first (Philippians 2:3).
