Plan International Malawi

We stand with girls to tear down barriers, save lives and build a world where equality for girls leads to progress for all.

In Malawi, poverty remains high. Teenage pregnancy and child marriage limit girls’ rights and potential.

Around 31% of girls aged 15 to 19 experience teenage pregnancy. 38% marry before 18, and 8% before 15. This limits girls’ access to education, health, safety, and opportunity.

But girls aren’t backing down. They’re raising their voices and leading the fight for change. We were built for this moment, standing fiercely beside girls, defending the hard-won progress they’ve made and demanding the change they still urgently need.

We’ve been working with communities, government and partners since 1994, tackling the root causes of the challenges faced by girls.

We work in 14 districts: Chikwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe, Machinga, Mangochi, Lilongwe, Dowa, Ntchisi, Kasungu, Nkhotakota, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Karonga and Chitipa.

Every day, girls are taking charge — staying in school, protecting their health and driving change in their communities. When girls lead, communities rise.

We won’t stop until we are all equal.

  • Supporting girls to learn the skills they need to get good jobs and build better futures.
  • Protecting girls from all forms of violence, by ending harmful practices like child marriage.
  • Twelve years of learning in safe schools with trained teachers for all girls.
  • Providing girls with access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.
  • Gender equality, so girls, boys, and all groups are included and treated fairly.
  • Teaching girls about their sexual and reproductive health and rights so they can make informed decisions and have access to youth friendly health services.
  • Amplifying girls voices and campaigning with them in decision making spaces to secure the changes they need.
  • Helping communities be prepared for and respond to emergencies, so girls stay healthy and safe from the first day of a crisis.

The Plan Malawi Country Strategy contributes to Plan International’s global vision: “Girls and young women are agents of sustainable change in an inclusive, safe and just society.”

The vision envisages a society where girls have the power and freedom to be catalysts for change within and across generations, with a valued voice that enables them to demand and drive the changes required to achieve gender equality and are crucial to attaining so many Sustainable Development Goals.

Flood and cyclone emergency response in Malawi

Malawi continues to face serious risks from cyclones and floods.

Flash floods, river flooding, landslides, and cyclone-related damage destroy homes, roads, schools, crops, and livelihoods.

Plan works with communities to make sure girls and their families have enough to eat, clean water, access to health services, stay safe, keep learning and are prepared for and can respond during floods.
