Zoe and Sherry Grant organised the first International Rengay Gathering in September 2021 (at the time, it was called “Rengay Under the Moon”) to promote not only the rengay form but also encourage their poet friends to meet online to write together. In 2022 this daughter-mother duo also started the Raining Rengay journal which has its first issue published in April 2023 to showcase rengay written during these online workshops as well as general rengay submission.
International Rengay Gatherings (IRG) take place over zoom twice each year in March/April and September/October. Usually on a Sunday, Zoe and Sherry host an AM session (9-11am NZ time) and a PM session (7-9pm NZ time). Each session opens with a round of self introduction, followed by a short presentation by a guest speaker. Participating haiku poets then get into breakout rooms in groups of 2 or 3 (sometimes 6) for about an hour to write a rengay (or two) before sharing with the rest of the group.
