2026-2027 Orientation Starts Monday, June 15, 2026
Welcome
Choosing where to train is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a physician. At UPMC, we believe residency is not just about learning medicine–it is about finding a community that will challenge you, support you, and help you grow into the physician and leader you want to become.
In the UPMC Medical Education Internal Medicine Residency Program, you will train in one of the nation’s largest integrated health systems and within a Department of Medicine ranked among the top 10 nationally for NIH funding. Our residents care for a diverse patient population, with 25% of inpatients receiving medical assistance and 50% insured by Medicare, and gain unmatched exposure to both the most vulnerable and the most complex cases in our region. UPMC is also home to one of the world’s most renowned organ transplant programs, offering residents extraordinary opportunities to learn from leaders in transplantation medicine while caring for patients whose stories are truly transformative. In addition, UPMC has become a national model for innovation in health care delivery, pioneering Affordable Care Act coverage in our region, advancing clinical analytics, and leading team-based approaches to population health. We are also proud to partner with the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, which enriches training with a focus on service, quality, and the care of veterans.
We design residency to be both rigorous and highly individualized. You’ll join a supportive community of physicians who share core values of compassion, curiosity, and collaboration. Our program blends outstanding inpatient and outpatient training with innovations such as resident-led bedside rounds, our 4+4 block schedule, and our House System that fosters connection and belonging. You’ll also have the chance to customize your experience through specialized tracks and certificates in areas such as global health, women’s health, and medical education. With faculty who have formal training in medical education and a department nationally recognized for educational innovation, you will learn in an environment that is shaping the future of how medicine is taught and practiced.
Beyond clinical excellence, you’ll find abundant opportunities for mentorship and scholarship alongside national leaders in every subspecialty. Through our close affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, residents benefit from rich opportunities for research collaboration, teaching medical students, and engaging in academic development within a world-class university setting. Our residents present at national conferences, publish impactful research, and graduate highly competitive for fellowship and academic careers. Our graduates become leaders in diverse, fulfilling careers at top institutions nationwide, with about half choosing to stay at UPMC long term. This reflects both the strength of our institution and the appeal of Pittsburgh, a city known for its vibrant culture, thriving food and arts scene, abundant outdoor recreation, affordability, and strong sense of community.
We invite you to explore all that our residency has to offer. Thank you for your interest in Internal Medicine at UPMC.
