I promised my friend Gina I'd crochet her a cat for one of her birthdays -- I finally got around to doing it. She named him Mr. Snooglekins. Here's how he came out...

hyperbolic planes and psuedospheres! [15 Apr 2006|11:47pm]
Image
bombsawaybaby
has anyone tried making one of the crocheted hyperbolic planes/pseudospheres? i started one today (kind of by accident), and having seen it before, looked it up to find out more about it.

any experimentation? tips, tricks, etc?

i'm going to make a ton of them and experiment, just for my curiosity. (and besides, i might be able to make a neat mobile or three out of these things when i'm done)
and since it's such a mathematic/scientific sort of thing, i'll go about this very scientifically:

what happens if i:
increase or decrease the rate of stitch increases. (ie, going from increasing every stitch to every three, or vice versa)
stop increasing and just keep crocheting outwards?
suddenly start decreasing every stitch? does it collapse in on itself and implode?
experimenting with increase rates (from increase every stitch to increase every ten stitches) and colors (single row stripes, blocks of color, varigated, tonal, etc)
i'm also thinking that doing scrumbles along the edges might prove a little time consuming, but well worth the effort. ^_^

i'm not out to solve mathematical equations or prove anything new... just curious on a purely aesthetic level.

i wish i'd found these on my first or second week of bedrest... not week eight! -grumble- oh well, four more weeks to go.

cross posted a couple places, sorry for repeats

crocheted pendant [30 Mar 2006|06:27pm]

i'm swapping with a girl living in japan; she was looking for someone to crochet around a pendant on a necklace (and i'm also sending some other crochet goodies & candies that aren't sold in japan) and in return she is sending me tons of goodies from the 100-yen shop (bento boxes, yarn, craft books), and i asked if she could also keep an eye out for ffxii potion for me :)

anyway, i bought a necklace at the thrift store (posted earlier) and cleaned it and finished crocheting around it, freeform just random stitches, and came up with this:

behind the lj-cut in case she looks at my journal ^^Collapse )

size 10 crochet thread & a size 7 hook

cake madness! [24 Nov 2005|09:22am]

i'm celebrating my 20th birthday on the 25th (tomorrow!) and to get into the mood, i've been crocheting cupcakes and cake slices all week long! ^_^ all the cakes are crocheted out of 100% acrylic yarn and stuffed with polyester fiber-fill. the cupcakes measure about 2" x 3", and the cake slices measure about 2" x 4". these were super fun to make!

Some more scrumbles:
IMG_2178

These are unrelated to the others that I have posted. They are crocheted from that recycled silk kimono thread that is spun into yarn. I'm not sure what I'll do with them. I find it very interesting that the colors are so different from the 2 different skeins, almost like they are from 2 different dyelots.

Scrumble in the style of Irish lace.

Crochet Section of BEETON'S BOOK OF NEEDLEWORK.

I couldn't get it to jump to the crochet section using that link, but maybe it works for you. If not, try searching for "crochet instructions".

They use UK terminology (i.e. US calls a single crochet a single; UK calls a single crochet a double).

There are several interesting patterns, and it's a good read.

I've been crocheting the same sushi over and over and wanted to add a little variety to my collection, so I went ahead and made six sushi I haven't done before (or attempted in the past, but never liked the way I made them).

Crocheted Sushi - Ltd Edt.

Rotate your head, then from top to bottom, left to right: Tekka Maki (tuna), Ikura (salmon roe), Alaska Roll (crab, salmon, cucumber, avocado), Ika (squid), Unagi (eel), and Sake (raw salmon). Crocheted with 100% acrylic yarn and a size h-hook.

Crafting Materials [23 Jun 2005|09:14am]

jessikahswalk
Hello everyone!
I've recently started up crafting again (knitting and sewing and crochetting) and it feels great. I finally found the time (or made the time I should say). I want to get started and get a ton of new materials and I was wondering what brands/types I should go with. A friend of mine suggested Simplicity for materials but I thought they only did paterns. I hope these don't sound like silly questions, but I'm just so excited and want to start out right. Appreciate all your help!
