got to watch anime this weekend
May. 16th, 2010 03:07 pmI watched Ookiku Furikabutte last night. All of it. Watching it felt like watching actual baseball games. Long, grueling, peppered with explosive excitement here and there. In fact, at times, I was waiting for the instant replay. Certainly different than other sports anime. Though to be fair I've only watched two other sports anime, Princess Nine and Prince of Tennis. Would Bamboo Blade be considered a sports anime? Well, I haven't finished that series anyway.
I also watched 5 centimeters per second. It's also a rather realistic anime. There's nothing neat about it in terms of story line. That is, it's not tied up in a neat package with a beginning, middle and end. It's just kind of sort of there and it meanders and it's a bit messy yet beautiful. Like life.
I really liked both of them. I couldn't put Ookiku Furikabutte down and now I want to read the manga and I'm looking forward to the next season. It really made me want to watch more baseball. I wish my husband was more into sports. It's lonely watching games by yourself.

traps and nosebleeds
Apr. 19th, 2010 04:02 pmI inadvertently did a marathon of Moyashimon and Maria Holic this weekend during my supreme effort NOT to procrastinate.
Maria Holic was beginning to give me a Sunako deja vu (Yamato Nadeshiko) with all the unnecessary nosebleeds when all of a sudden, we had episode 11. That episode was pure pure gold. (They really needed to have more of Maria. With his name on the title, one would think he'd have a bigger role.)
I want the second season of Moyashimon now!!! I was glad to learn the first volume is out in English. I shall now go hunting for it.

hulu and hubby
Dec. 3rd, 2009 01:37 amMy husband likes discovering new shows on Hulu and this evening he started a new anime series. It was an English dub and I was making fun of the slightly over the top acting when I noticed the rather blatant m/m subtext. So I asked him what he was watching and he tells me it seems to be about vampires and dragons or something like that. He kept watching and I mocked the dialogue a bit more until I notice the subtext smacked of TEXT. Perhaps my husband wouldn't notice and, oh wouldn't it be amusing if he watches a bunch of episodes only to have an epiphany that it was yaoi. I wondered what kind of reaction he would have. Of course, at that time, I wasn't really sure that it was even Boys Love; I wasn't familiar with the English title. It was after all on Hulu and my husband was watching it. Maybe I just have my yaoi-colored glasses on.
Still I couldn't stop giggling at the thought that he could be watching yaoi. When I finally saw the other protagonist who had UKE written all over him in bright bold letters, I laughed even harder. My husband gave me a narrowed look and I finally told him of my suspicion that the anime strikes me as Boys Love.
He asked me what that meant and I explained. He watched several more minutes but turned it off before the end of the episode. I asked, "why, aren't you going to watch the rest?"
He replied, "You've ruined it for me."
I finally googled the English title and it turned out the anime was Yami no Matsuei.

Dec. 2nd, 2009 05:55 pmIn one day, I read the book and watched the Miyazaki movie. The book is wonderful. The movie not so much. Perhaps I should not have watched the movie immediately after reading the book. Or maybe I should have watched the movie first. I thought it was rather weak and it practically killed the wonderful characters from the novel. I knew that there would be differences, but I didn't think I would be so sorely disappointed. If I were the novelist, I would have probably felt insulted (and slightly horrified).

I am never sure how to reply to these kinds of things. My natural reaction is to say, "I don't pray", but it's such a callous thing to say in the face of their tragedy and saying, "oh that's too bad" is trite and lying ("I'll keep them in my prayers") just seems so out of place. So I end up going, "oh... uh... that's... well... yeah" *sad face*.
I'm really just bad at this social thing.
