1. Well, I was going to go in to work today because I have a weekly meeting with my supervisor, but just as I was starting to get ready to go, he messaged me and said if I still wasn't feeling well, we could skip the meeting and I could stay home, so I took him up on the offer. I am feeling mostly recovered, no more congestion, but the cough is lingering and I did have trouble sleeping again last night due to uncontrolled coughing, so I was glad not to feel like I had to force myself to go in just for that one meeting.

2. Last night I walked up to the library and then continued on to Whole Foods to see if they had anything appealing for dessert and I found they have magic cookie bars from their bakery and they don't have walnuts! When I've made them at home, I always leave out the nuts because I am not a fan of nuts in most baked goods, and especially not walnuts, which have such an overpowering flavor to me, but any time I've seen them elsewhere they've always got walnuts. These do have pecans, but that's acceptable, if not ideal. They are really delicious, actually. I would buy them again. (It was a pack of four, so I have dessert tonight, too.)

3. Carla's train seems to be reporting on time and she should be here in about twelve hours. I'm so glad she was able to get out of the Chicago area before the smoke.

4. Molly wants to know why I'm taking her picture.

The Egyptian Mystery & The Camden Spiritualist
Last two books in the Penny Green series. Super disappointed by the ending )

Murder Crossed Her Mind
Fourth in the Pentecost and Parker mystery series. I enjoyed this. It ended on a cliffhanger, so I immediately got the next one from the library.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts
New Marlow Murder Club book. Another cliffhanger from a genre that is usually stand-alone. I am not a fan! Especially in this case, as there is no release date yet for the next book and the US release is always very behind the UK release (this one, for example, was six months behind), which is a rant of its own. Books in English should be simulpubbed to English speaking countries! If there is no translation involved, there should be no delay! Anyway, I enjoyed this, but am also annoyed by the cliffhanger.

Space Invaders
Novella set in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship about a group of classmates who have never forgotten the girl who mysteriously stopped coming to school one day. This is litfic, and the title is a reference to the video game, not to any sci-fi reason for her disappearance! I heard about this from a review by [personal profile] rachelmanija and I liked it, though maybe not as much as she and other commenters seem to have. It's very short, though, so worth giving a go for sure.

Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World
This was such a good book! It explores the history of parking in the US and what measures have been taken in recent years to try and reverse the course of turning the entire country into one giant parking lot.

Rare Flavours
Graphic novel set in India, about a rakshasa who, after hearing of Anthony Bourdain's death, decides he wants to be the next Bourdain and finds someone to film him. I liked this a lot. Really nice art, too. I was also amused by the mash up of like, a cozy Japanese cooking manga (this has recipes!) and this literal demon who is eating the guys who cook for him (spoiler?). But it's not actually a comedy (though it does have a humorous tone through much of it).

1. I finished the last of that Star Wars puzzle multi-pack. The limited color pallette of this one made it not as fun as the others, especially when I was down to nothing but Vader's cape lol. I did enjoy it, though, and now the whole set is out in the Little Library for someone else to enjoy.

2. I am still sick, though definitely feeling better than yesterday if for no other reason than I actually got a fair amount of sleep last night. I did wake up more than usual, both due to congestion and the heat, but feel much more rested, and in general my symptoms seem to be improving. I will probably mask up and go in to work tomorrow (with how runny my nose was yesterday, masking was definitely not an option, even if I had felt safe to drive after no sleep, which I didn't).

3. Sidecar announced yet another new seasonal flavor. Actually they announced it yesterday after I'd already eaten breakfast, and I stopped in there after Shake Shack, since it's just a block away, but they were temporarily out and said it would be another 15-20 minutes, so I didn't stick around. I got one this morning, though, and it was so good! It's mango sticky rice, and it has a little ball of actual sticky rice in the center of the donut, as well as some puffed rice on top (and mango of course). They're known for their huckleberry donuts (which are also delicious) and now offer huckleberry foam on any drink, so I got a cold brew with the foam and that was very tasty, too. (Hopefully early enough in the morning it doesn't keep me up tonight.)

4. Carla is on the train home. She should be arriving in LA early Saturday morning.

5. Gemma being suspicious again.

The air quality here is so bad right now thanks to the Canadian wildfires. Obviously being near to the fires themselves would be a lot worse, but my poor lungs aren't happy being outside without a mask on, and the orange quality to the light is so unnerving.

1. Well, yesterday I was still coughing and was hoping it was just continued throat/lung irritation from the weekend but then in the evening I suddenly got mega congested, so I've officially got a cold, yay. I couldn't get any sleep last night due to the congestion, so between that and my nose running non-stop I decided it was best to work from home today. I am actually not feeling that bad, though, aside from being super tired from not getting any sleep. I'm going to work from home again tomorrow and we'll see about Friday.

2. I rode my bike to Shake Shack for lunch. They're pretty much my favorite burger place these days.

3. In the afternoon/early evening I was feeling super hungry but had no energy to make anything so I ordered dinner. I decided to get from Sweetgreen, which I've never had before. Being pretty much all salads, it's not something Carla would be that interested in, so I figured now was a good time to try them. I got their super green goddess salad, which has roasted sweet potatoes and was very tasty.

4. I perked up quite a bit after dinner and decided to walk over to the nearby ice cream place for dessert. Haven't been there in a while and it was perfect for a hot evening.

5. Look at this sweet boy!

Yesterday, I made a key lime pie, and this morning, I had it for breakfast, because that is what I do on my birthday! (And Thanksgiving - pie for breakfast is a Thanksgiving tradition in my family.) Here's the recipe I used:

key lime pie recipe )

I just bought a premade graham cracker crust though, so it was even easier than it sounds.

I also started clearing out some clothes I no longer wear or that no longer fit etc., one drawer a day to keep it manageable.

For dinner, I made the King Arthur small batch focaccia, but for some reason it stuck to the pan. It was still delicious, just annoying. I still recommend the recipe, just maybe not on a 95°F day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mostly, I've been reading fic and scrolling on tumblr - it's been a good, relaxing day.

1. I walked up to 85 Degrees for my after lunch walk and they have a new smoothie! It's ube, coconut, and mango and is really tasty. The tagline said it's halo-halo influenced and it definitely has that vibe. The coconut is not just coconut flavor, for example, but chunks of macapuno.

1. I had too much caffeine yesterday (though all earlier in the day) and really struggled to get to sleep last night, so I was feeling super wiped out today and very glad I didn't have work (I'm trying not to get into the cycle of having more caffeine to try and perk myself up, leading to not sleeping well again, etc etc). After I got back from the dentist I ended up taking a little nap with both Ollie and Jasper in bed with me, which was super sweet.

2. Everything went fine at the dentist, though she was about twenty minutes late to see me. At least I had my phone so I could read while I waited. I've got a temp filling and an appointment to come back in two weeks to get the partial crown put on.

3. It looks like the heat wave this week is not going to be quite as hot as first predicted. Last week when I checked, it was saying that even here in Santa Monica there would be a couple days in the mid 80s, but now it's saying the high will be 82 on Thursday. Unfortunately after that it looks like the rest of the ten day forecast is just all 78/79/80 days, which I am not looking forward to.

4. I went to a fancy cookie shop this afternoon and got a couple fancy cookies. I haven't eaten them yet, but I'm hoping they're good! One is caramel, chocolate, and pretzels, which seems like it can't be bad!

5. Chloe!

Yesterday was great! Both the cake and the brownies turned out well and everyone liked them! Baby Miss L enjoyed her new books and showed us all the pictures from her trip to Disney where she met so many princesses plus Winnie the Pooh and Tigger and Eeyore!

I also discovered that my brother's new pool has steps instead of a ladder, so I can actually use it. The last time I tried, it took me way too long to get myself out because I was so afraid my knee wouldn't hold up, since the distance between the rungs was so large. But the steps are easy to get up and down - I did not have a bathing suit yesterday but I did have bike shorts on under my dress, so I just hiked up the skirt and went down the first two steps to test it out and it was fine. So that makes me very happy! I can now spend most of my week there in the pool, weather permitting. I just have to remember my ear plugs, because last time I did that, I got a nasty ear infection. And mostly outside as well, away from all the cat dander that makes me so miserable, even with Zyrtec.

I also told my brother I was not handling anything related to the litter box and he and my niece assured me they have an automatic(?) one, and a backup one if the automatic one gets messed up, and it will be fine for a week. And apparently Brie was so anxious when Bleu had to go to the vet without her that now they might be leaving him home instead of sending him to camp for the week. Idk, but he is a very good boy! And Brie is still full of anxiety. but I figure if the weather is good, she can just stay outside until she's ready to come in, instead of me trying to coax her inside with treats and failing miserably. So we'll see how it goes!

Today, the cleaning ladies came, so my apartment is clean, and my laundry was dropped off (though they left it at the wrong apartment door - I swear, sometimes I can't even with people - so I had to go get it, but thankfully it was just one floor down), so my vacation is starting off on a very organized and tidy note. *g*

1. I woke up this morning with a lot of phlegm. I guess the air quality was even worse than I originally thought. :-/ But it's definitely been getting better throughout the day. Here's hoping tomorrow I really will wake up back to normal.

2. Even though the reason I have tomorrow off is that I have an awkwardly timed dentist appointment, I am glad to have another day off. The dentist should take no more than two hours max (cavity + partial crown fitting) so that's a lot of day left to just enjoy the fact that I'm not working.

3. I went to Randy's Donuts for breakfast. They still have the mango tajin one and that was tempting, but I decided to get something else and instead tried their cherry frosted cake donut (pretty good but not wow) and a maple glazed donut topped with mini churros and thick caramel, which was really good.

4. Tuxie really loves just chilling out in that planter.

1. The other day I saw a post on instagram for a new cinnamon roll shop in Grand Central Market downtown, and I decided that I would ride my bike down there this morning to try it out. It's about twenty miles one way, so it's definitely a long ride, and if Carla were here, I'd just suggest we take the train. As it is, I took the train part of the way home because my bike's battery was low and I knew I didn't have enough juice for the whole way. It can be ridden with no battery, but because of having a battery, it's much heavier than the average non-electric bike, so I didn't fancy having to slog the last ten miles or so with no motor.

Anyway! It's pretty easy to just generally follow the path of the train downtown as there is a bike path for much of the way, though it does just randomly end and start up again in places, and there were times when I got away from it because I couldn't tell the right way to go to get to the next leg, but as long as you generally keep going east, you'll get to downtown, so that's what I did.

I left the house around 8:20 or so and it took me about an hour and a half. It was not super sunny yet and there wasn't a lot of traffic even when I was just on the road, so overall it was a nice ride. The website had told me the shop was open at nine, but actually they didn't open until ten, so I walked around the market and checked out the other shops first. There were lots of other tasty looking places, including Egg Slut, which is probably the most famous and definitely had the longest line. I got a matcha chai latte from a bakery with no lines and that was really nice to cool off with.

Then finally the cinammon roll place was open and I got my blueberry lemon cinnamon roll.

Image

It is pretty big, though not as big as I thought it might be from the pics I had seen beforehand. Would have been better to share, but I could finish it. Would I go there again specifically for this? Probably not, but it was a fun outing.

Afterwards I rode my bike to the closest train station but that was an underground one and I didn't want to go to the trouble of lugging my bike down, so I rode for a couple miles to get to one I knew was aboveground (most of them are) and then took that till I was about five miles from home and rode the rest of the way. Annoyingly, I was not able to sit at all on the train even though there were seats, as there was no way to sit and hang on to my bike while also not being in everyone's way.

And I stopped at Campos to grab a burrito for lunch because I'd seen a guy eating a burrito on the train and it looked really good!

Aside from the fact that my lungs feel tight in a way that reminds me of smoggy summer days when I was a kid (I don't think the air quality was ideal for a ~30 mile bike ride), I had a great morning.

2. I finished up the third Star Wars poster puzzle.

I got up this morning and did some chores (I had to re-season my carbon steel frying pan, among other things) and then set to baking an orange blueberry crumb cake where I subbed in orange zest in the cream cheese filling and orange juice in the cake (where I doubt you'll be able to taste it), because as previously mentioned, my sister doesn't like lemon and I wanted her to eat some cake (if she wanted to). But since I can't taste it ahead of time, I started to get a little nervous, so after dinner, I also baked a big tray of brownies because I know everybody likes them.

In other news, the Women's Pro Baseball League is coming, starting August 1st! And New York has a team! As I said to my nephew, they are bound to be better than the Mets! So I will have to check that out.

The Gang of St Bride's & Murder in Ratcliffe
Books 9 and 10 in the Penny Green series. I like historical murder mysteries with female protagonists, which means that the majority of them are also het romances, because that's the way the genre goes, and they almost all start with the MC being against marriage and not wanting to lose her freedom, but of course she falls for this guy and they do end up getting married. Well, I have to say that I really like the way that this series follows through with that and has Penny have really mixed feelings about having gotten married. On the one hand, she loves her husband and wants to be with him, but even though he was okay with her continuing her job at the newspaper, the newspaper's owner insisted she quit as it wouldn't be proper for a married woman to write for the paper, and she is feeling bored and restless and upset that she is now expected to do nothing but be a wife and eventual mother (which she does not want, either).

The Safe Room
Short story I got through Amazon First Reads. A woman is cleaning out her father's house after his death and finds out he was keeping a lot of secrets. I enjoyed this. Would have been good as a full length novel, too.

Louis Undercover
Graphic novel about a young boy whose parents split up because of his father's alcoholism. I liked this a lot.

Kibry's Lessons for Falling (in Love)
YA graphic novel about a gay Chinese American girl who starts falling for her new best friend and fellow student newspaper writer. The story was cute, but the art was really rough.
