Not a bad episode (these days I’m glad whenever we get something barely non-horrible, which says sad things about the state of this show – where have all the good writers gone?), but not a great one, either. The plot was sub-par, but I did like the emotional moments between Sam and Dean.
Plot-wise, I did like the idea of the Ragnarök-cult. It’s new mythology, but it doesn’t contradict anything that was said before. And it makes perfect sense that no species is completely uniform in its beliefs and goals. We’ve seen a lot about the in-fighting and various factions in Heaven and Hell, so why wouldn’t the same thing apply to werewolves? That said, the execution was deeply bland. This cult had what, five people in it? Who were nice enough to wear clear identification of membership around their neck? It also irked me how the Pagan concept was contrasted with the Christian themes of the Reverend and his non-human-killing werewolves. I always liked SPN for being less than gung-ho about Christianity, so something like this is just disappointingly conventional. Throw an evil stepmother with a nazi attitude in the mix and you have the perfect cliché stew.
Garth was slightly less grating, for once. I liked the things he said about finding and embracing happiness even in unexpected places. You could see it strike home for Dean, and I think it was important he heard that.
Apart from that, there were several annoying inconsistencies: what happened to Garth’s previous girlfriend? What was that with the eviscerated farm animals – why would Garth sneak into stables if they have a whole fridge full of legally bought stuff?
Dean and Sam, on the other hand, now that was refreshing. I liked their competence (Sam seeing through Dean’s attempt to hide the camera footage and fighting even while tied up, Dean masking his scent and being badass) and how they seem to finally have learned to ask questions before starting a massacre. But my favourite thing was that the conflict between them wasn’t just swept under the rug for once. They’re back to working together, but it doesn’t restore the status quo. Let’s hope we’re actually getting a new, better dynamic out of this.
Oh, and that bit about the Mark of Cain was hilarious. "Got this from an Old Testament dude, must be Tuesday." The Winchesters are the most jaded people on the planet. XD
