After Us

After Us

written by: Zunaira Rehman

We did not fail at love
we failed at timing,
you came with open hands
I arrived already learning how to let go.
Between us
there was always a delay,
like two letters posted too late
to meet in the same season.
We tried to make permanence
out of two different kinds of absence,
but love does not bend for longing.
It only unveils it
and what we were,
was beautiful
and impossible.
At the same time,
Our love was doomed.
