Selfless
written by: Elisa Grant
How far would you go for the ones you love?
What would you risk, what would you give up?
Life is a series of choices we make.
Would you step aside or put yourself at stake?
No matter how big your dreams, how hard you’ve worked,
You set them aside, putting others first.
Yet in return comes a feeling undefined,
A warmth that numbs the ache inside.
Why are you so selfless? What are you trying to prove?
Do you give to others because no one gave to you?
You know the sting of abandonment, the ache of being alone,
So you strive to spare others the pain you’ve known.
After pouring out all of yourself and receiving none in return,
You ask what went wrong, what lesson you must learn.
But maybe the lesson was never for you.
You’ve done your part, you’ve seen it through.
Those you’ve lifted will carry the weight,
Haunted by your memory, your selfless fate.
