Gnome Wars – Pacific Islanders

As a Gnome Wars miniatures collector, it seems like forever since a new faction has been added to the gnome world. At this summer’s 2025 Historicon convention, I stopped by the Brigade Games booth to see what I could add to my collection and to build up some of my smaller armies. A friendly employee chatted up a new release of Gnomes. You may have seen these discussed on Wachtmeister’s Blog. Another set of fun and humorous sculpts, this time what they described as Hawaiian Gnomes. I thought them to have Tiki inspired heads when I purchased them, but upon further inspection they have Rapa nui heads as in the Easter Island heads.

My painting skills barely scratch the surface of how creative that you can be in painting these guys up. As I was having fun painting these guys, it made me want to share my progress so far. I actually purchased two units and a pineapple artillery crew, so you might see more of these guys in the future.

Gnome Wars: Battle for the Star of Sloofnick

Gathering together today we got to have our annual Gnome Wars game. This scenario had one alliance stealing treasures including the magical ruby known by gnomes as the Star of Sloofnick, while the other tried to stop them and reclaim it for their own.

One one side we had Irish, Highlanders, and Sikhs (IHS) forces run by Steve and Wally, while on the other side of the battlefield were the French, German and Russian (FGR) troops led by yours truly.

The IHS victory objectives were basically moving three pack mules loaded with treasures off of the left and right flanks via the Old Bridge and through the pass between the Red Hill or by finding refuge in the Elven Tower within the mystic Faerie Ring formation.

Gnome Wars: Historicon 2023

We got to play in a big battle game this year at Historicon. We did not register for the game but showed up with painted units and joined in the fun. Steve ran Russians, while I was the French and Wally was granted the honor of running the Mormons again.

Game Description – Gnome Wars: The Assault on Fort Lockhart – Sikhs and British on the Northwest Frontier. The relief column was due two days ago, supplies and ammunition are running low. A dust cloud on the horizon brings hope, but it is the enemy. The remaining ammunition is divided and letters to loved ones are written because the defenders are doubtful that they will see another sunrise.

Gnomes War: Historicon 2022

Here is a photo dump of our Gnomes War games from two years ago at Historicon. Wally and I had a blast and this was his introduction to running the Mormans. I was the Irish which seemed to be everyone’s target. I think that I did well as they whittled my troops down being able to pick up several objectives until they finally fell to Lucky Lon’s Pirates.

Game description: The US Cavalry needs to protect a station just inside Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone Special, carrying visiting dignitaries, gold for the payroll, and various “beverages”, is inbound and several interested parties are headed for the station. Who will be in control when the train pulls in?

Gnome Wars Battle – Frosty Ones on the Matterhorn

Dusting this post off after a couple of years sitting my drafts, good thing gnomes have a long life span.

After a pandemic hiatus of two years, I finally got to get together with friends to play a miniature wargame. Wanting to have a laugh and the fun of wargaming, we decided to break out the Gnomes.

I have always wanted to run a seasonal themed game, so as we near the Christmas season, I thought that I would build out a scenario around Santa.

Image

High in the Swiss Alps, atop the towering Matterhorn, sits a small compound of buildings aside of an old castle. This secret site houses Santa’s famous brewery (Tinklehaus). Field Marshal Drunkenburger (Germans) has ordered a contingent of Gnomes on an expedition to raid this fabled location seeking kegs of the fine pilsner. Defense of this location for Santa is secured by Swiss forces and some wintery friends of the Matterhorn. Can the Germans and their allies (Irish) surprise this outpost and make off with Santa’s legendary brew? If Santa comes to town, he’ll certainly be one mad elf if someone makes off with his Christmas cheer.

Gnome Wars – White Russians (Cossacks)

Brigade Games – Gnome Wars Russian Cossacks

These guys were brought home from Historicon this summer. Brigade Games is actually going through a remolding of the Gnome Wars line. So what they had on hand was limited, but I picked up a few neat ones to paint up.

With these guys, I almost exclusively used Citadel contrast paints which I’m relatively new to using. Contrast paints give a distinct look, but they certainly help you paint up minis quickly which when painting up units helps you conquer quantity.

Gnome Wars – Irish (Clurichaun)

As we close out of this most forgettable year, I’ve been working on another unit for my Gnome War’s armies. This group is decked out in red, which seemingly is not very Irish at least the way that we typically imagine, They are not a group of Leprechaun as you might expect, rather they are Clurichaun who are cousins of the Leprechaun, but are generally drunker, surlier and always up to fight.

This is the first half of the unit armed with shillelagh on parade.

Level 1 Complete

The July painting challenge is a success! I have completed my meager goal of six minis with nearly two weeks to spare. I put in a couple of hours in the evening several nights. I block painted, washed and then brought back up the original colors. This is my definition of basic table ready.

There were four different sculpts and I used the same color palette, trying to have them look like a unit.

I think the ideas of this challenge worked for me, but since I set the bar pretty low I didn’t feel any real pressure to finish. Next month I’ll up the ante and try to double the output. I’m not sure if that’s achievable, but I’ll be looking for the next batch to paint over the next few days.

Til next time, Cheers!

Paint Challenge Month #1

Motivation comes in many forms, and in this case a little friendly challenge of friends to in this case challenge themselves to paint minis and lessen the unpainted lead pile. So what’s the goal? 1 unit of minis that can be played in Sevy’s Sword if Severnia fantasy wargame. That would be 6-8 infantry, 3 cavalry, 2-3 brutes, or a single monster in a month. Sounds totally achievable, but history says differently. Obviously we have day jobs, wives and family, homes and other interests all competing for our time. When you whittle that down you don’t have a lot of left over time that is unaccounted for, but if you take small slivers of that time and dedicate it to an achievable goal we might just have a chance. So I say “game on!”

I’ve chosen a small group of Norse archers that can do double duty by being one half of a unit for Saga also. As you can see they are already based and primed. Which give me a little head start that can only help. So six Vikings to be completed by July 15th. Wish me luck. Check out my progress in future posts. Cheers!
