1. Well, I was going to go in to work today because I have a weekly meeting with my supervisor, but just as I was starting to get ready to go, he messaged me and said if I still wasn't feeling well, we could skip the meeting and I could stay home, so I took him up on the offer. I am feeling mostly recovered, no more congestion, but the cough is lingering and I did have trouble sleeping again last night due to uncontrolled coughing, so I was glad not to feel like I had to force myself to go in just for that one meeting.

2. Last night I walked up to the library and then continued on to Whole Foods to see if they had anything appealing for dessert and I found they have magic cookie bars from their bakery and they don't have walnuts! When I've made them at home, I always leave out the nuts because I am not a fan of nuts in most baked goods, and especially not walnuts, which have such an overpowering flavor to me, but any time I've seen them elsewhere they've always got walnuts. These do have pecans, but that's acceptable, if not ideal. They are really delicious, actually. I would buy them again. (It was a pack of four, so I have dessert tonight, too.)

3. Carla's train seems to be reporting on time and she should be here in about twelve hours. I'm so glad she was able to get out of the Chicago area before the smoke.

4. Molly wants to know why I'm taking her picture.

Weekly Reading

torachan: aradia from homestuck (aradia)
Recently Finished
The Egyptian Mystery & The Camden Spiritualist
Last two books in the Penny Green series. Super disappointed by the ending )

Murder Crossed Her Mind
Fourth in the Pentecost and Parker mystery series. I enjoyed this. It ended on a cliffhanger, so I immediately got the next one from the library.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts
New Marlow Murder Club book. Another cliffhanger from a genre that is usually stand-alone. I am not a fan! Especially in this case, as there is no release date yet for the next book and the US release is always very behind the UK release (this one, for example, was six months behind), which is a rant of its own. Books in English should be simulpubbed to English speaking countries! If there is no translation involved, there should be no delay! Anyway, I enjoyed this, but am also annoyed by the cliffhanger.

Space Invaders
Novella set in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship about a group of classmates who have never forgotten the girl who mysteriously stopped coming to school one day. This is litfic, and the title is a reference to the video game, not to any sci-fi reason for her disappearance! I heard about this from a review by [personal profile] rachelmanija and I liked it, though maybe not as much as she and other commenters seem to have. It's very short, though, so worth giving a go for sure.

Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World
This was such a good book! It explores the history of parking in the US and what measures have been taken in recent years to try and reverse the course of turning the entire country into one giant parking lot.

Rare Flavours
Graphic novel set in India, about a rakshasa who, after hearing of Anthony Bourdain's death, decides he wants to be the next Bourdain and finds someone to film him. I liked this a lot. Really nice art, too. I was also amused by the mash up of like, a cozy Japanese cooking manga (this has recipes!) and this literal demon who is eating the guys who cook for him (spoiler?). But it's not actually a comedy (though it does have a humorous tone through much of it).
tyger: Mickey in his OXIII coat. Text: Light in Darkness (Mickey - Light In Darkness)

I dozed off a bit after breakfast, but other than that no naps! And I spent time with everyone while Sibling was here for the entire time which was like. Two hours? Maybe more?? That is a LOT for a me! I am proud!

I really didn't mean to be up this late, but I was in the middle of something in Vintage Story and I just didn't want to leave it half-done... Yeah, I probably shoulda. But Oh Well, it's the weekend so there won't be any banging or any other building noises! \o/ I can sleeeep~!

Which I will do now. Yes. :D

1. I finished the last of that Star Wars puzzle multi-pack. The limited color pallette of this one made it not as fun as the others, especially when I was down to nothing but Vader's cape lol. I did enjoy it, though, and now the whole set is out in the Little Library for someone else to enjoy.

2. I am still sick, though definitely feeling better than yesterday if for no other reason than I actually got a fair amount of sleep last night. I did wake up more than usual, both due to congestion and the heat, but feel much more rested, and in general my symptoms seem to be improving. I will probably mask up and go in to work tomorrow (with how runny my nose was yesterday, masking was definitely not an option, even if I had felt safe to drive after no sleep, which I didn't).

3. Sidecar announced yet another new seasonal flavor. Actually they announced it yesterday after I'd already eaten breakfast, and I stopped in there after Shake Shack, since it's just a block away, but they were temporarily out and said it would be another 15-20 minutes, so I didn't stick around. I got one this morning, though, and it was so good! It's mango sticky rice, and it has a little ball of actual sticky rice in the center of the donut, as well as some puffed rice on top (and mango of course). They're known for their huckleberry donuts (which are also delicious) and now offer huckleberry foam on any drink, so I got a cold brew with the foam and that was very tasty, too. (Hopefully early enough in the morning it doesn't keep me up tonight.)

4. Carla is on the train home. She should be arriving in LA early Saturday morning.

5. Gemma being suspicious again.

WILL GOT THE JOB. After 3 1/2 years trying to get a decent job in a field oversaturated with job seekers, they got an amazing offer letter. Hybrid, four days a week, amazing pay, great benefits. WHEW. Things were getting pretty scary for a minute there! I'm so proud of them for hanging in there and not giving up! I know the job market is terrible everywhere right now and Seattle is no different; the tech companies are laying people off hundreds, if not thousands. Will doesn't work in tech, but I imagine tech skills can trickle into multiple office-type jobs. This is SUCH A RELIEF.

Gotta go to bed, because holy crap there is a LOT of noise during the day, bleh. I mean, knew there would be but still it's a LOT. :/ Went to the shops with Mama today just to get out of it for a while, and honestly the shopping centre was quieter. Very weird!

Not a whole lot other than that, really. Vintage Story, of course. Mama had a bit of a bitchfest this evening, because apparently my father Did A Gross in the en suite (I don't know, and I don't want to know, what specifically, just that Was Gross), and didn't clean up properly after himself, just went to bed. Soooo tomorrow there will be An Discussion. Siiiigh. Hopefully I can be out of earshot from that... (Also like. C'mon, dude, you're almost 70, take some responsibility.)

Anyway I've been back for one day and sharing the itty bitty en suite bathroom is already Difficult, siiiigh. But we'll get through it one way or another!!! Hopefully not the murder way...

1. Well, yesterday I was still coughing and was hoping it was just continued throat/lung irritation from the weekend but then in the evening I suddenly got mega congested, so I've officially got a cold, yay. I couldn't get any sleep last night due to the congestion, so between that and my nose running non-stop I decided it was best to work from home today. I am actually not feeling that bad, though, aside from being super tired from not getting any sleep. I'm going to work from home again tomorrow and we'll see about Friday.

2. I rode my bike to Shake Shack for lunch. They're pretty much my favorite burger place these days.

3. In the afternoon/early evening I was feeling super hungry but had no energy to make anything so I ordered dinner. I decided to get from Sweetgreen, which I've never had before. Being pretty much all salads, it's not something Carla would be that interested in, so I figured now was a good time to try them. I got their super green goddess salad, which has roasted sweet potatoes and was very tasty.

4. I perked up quite a bit after dinner and decided to walk over to the nearby ice cream place for dessert. Haven't been there in a while and it was perfect for a hot evening.

5. Look at this sweet boy!

Slice-of-life Manga Rec List

Jul. 15th, 2026 08:25 am[personal profile] forestofglory posting in [community profile] ladybusiness
forestofglory: A green pony with a braided mane and tail and tree cutie mark (Lady Business)
Thanks funnily enough to Superman vs. Meshi (which I talked about in my recent post about Superhero comics) I’ve been reminded that I love slice-of-life manga and I have been reading a lot of it!

Slice-of-life manga are stories about everyday life. They often center domestic labor, and feature community building. (These are things that I want in cosy SFF but have had mixed luck finding.) I find slice-of-life manga soothing but also I appreciate that they focus on things that often aren’t considered “story worthy” but are important.

The manga often have a wealth of detail about specific crafts or professions. What kind of tools people use, how things are made, etc. I always find this interesting and fun to learn about!

Slice-of-life manga are generally sweet and cute. They often feature small everyday moments and family and friends bonding. I have a special fondness for the ones that have very detailed descriptions of food, when characters say stuff like “The X and Y in this dish really brings out the Z” even though it makes me hungry sometimes.

Slice-of-life manga can overlap with all kinds of genres. The ones I’ve recced here are all set in contemporary Japan but I’ve also read a couple of post-apocliptic and historical slice-of-life stories, and I know there are other genres out there like fantasy that I haven’t explored yet.

I’m still learning the genre but I wanted to share a few of my favorites so far:

Hirayasumi by Keigo Shinzō— A story about two cousins living together in a small house in Tokyo. The younger cousin is an 18-yearold woman who just moved to Tokyo for art school, and the older cousin is a 29-year-old man who works a kinda dead-end job. He inherited the house from an old woman he befriended who didn't have any relatives. It’s very charming, I find both of the cousins relatable in different ways.

I really enjoy all the environments in this! The characters' rooms feel like a little glimpse into who they are. And the cityscapes are so warm and lived in!

(This is very popular at my library at the moment so this rec is for volumes 1-4)

Laid-Back Camp Vol. 15-17 by Afro— This is about a club of high school girls who go camping both together and separately. There are lots and lots of details about food and camping equipment, but I also enjoy the relationships between the girls and their growing friendships.

This also has wonderful landscapes. There are scenic campsites, of course, featuring lakes, mountains, trees, etc. But there are also good scenes of people traveling on buses, trains, roads through the mountains, etc.

Yotsuba&! #15 by Kiyohiko Azuma— A very cute manga about Yotsuba, a preschool girl, her adoptive dad, and their friends and family. It’s just full of everyday things like going shopping, trying new foods, and looking for rocks. Yotsuba is so lovable and also determined in everything she does, she really makes the whole thing work.

Silver Spoon, vol 14-15 by Hiromu Arakawa—This is a charming story about a city kid who goes to an agricultural high school to get away from everything. I love all the details about food, farming equipment, and rural life. The types of issues that Japanese farming families deal with in this book feel very familiar and true to life, from my limited experience of US rural life. They worry about things like land succession, how much to invest in big machines, etc. The author grew up on a farm and is clearly drawing from that experience.
Content note: death of named animals

Have you read any of these? What did you think? What other slice-of-life manga would you recommend?

1. I walked up to 85 Degrees for my after lunch walk and they have a new smoothie! It's ube, coconut, and mango and is really tasty. The tagline said it's halo-halo influenced and it definitely has that vibe. The coconut is not just coconut flavor, for example, but chunks of macapuno.

I'd get it again!

2. I love the expression on Jasper's face.

Reccer's Notes: LesbianlazerOwl’s AU where the Jiang and Jin Sects are deep-sea merfolk is a strange and rapturous gem that turns Lovecraftiana upside-down (from the POV of a character embodying everything Lovecraft abhorred: a queer Asian—here turned sea creature—looking to monsterfuck.)

With all the haughty smarter-than-the-sheeple dudgeon of the alienated Emo Kid, Abyssal Merman! and Seeker of Arcane Knowledge Mo Xuanyu follows his idol the Yiling Laozu’s forbidden explorations of the mysterious and unfathomable surface—where, according to rumor, he found love with an eldritch air fairy! (Should the author ever see fit, I’d love to read a Wangxian prequel.)

LesbianlazerOwl compresses an incredible amount of atmosphere and implicit worldbuilding into just short of 5000 words, in ways that encourage still further speculation (the Sunshot Campaign is referenced; what could justify such a name in this world, and what were the Wen—creatures of the infernal blazing heights of the Epipelagic Zone?)

So at... some time this morning, probably around 6:30? It was almost seven when I looked at the time, but that was After A Bit, so eh, probably about then. I was fast asleep, as is usual for that time! Until. I was woken up. Because Gazelle PEED ON ME. Through the doona!

Definitely in the top ten 'worst ways to wake up', that I've personally experienced. Just. GROSS.

So there was a lot of internal swearing, and also a little bit via text to A, but I'm reasonably sure I didn't actually say anything out loud, because. Early. No. And I had to strip off and clean as much as I could when barely conscious, and then do the washing after I woke up again and it was, you know, LIGHT OUT. I think my pj pants should be dry, though I have little hope for the actual doona (luckily A sent H over to grab me another one); dunno if I managed to get all the smell out, though I did douse everything in the anti-pee-smell stuff. Just. It was SOAKED. D: D: D:

And then! This evening! I was about to go get take away because fuck cooking, and why is my shoe wet...? YEAH SHE PEED IN THAT TOO. Before? After? I have no fucking idea. But now my shoe has also been doused with the anti-smell-stuff and HOPEFULLY it'll dry out by the time I need to go home tomorrow, but I doubt it. :/ I may have to steal a pair of A's shoes, or get Mama to pick me up. (I was gonna take the bus since schedules are a thing, but... Shoes. Needed.)

I DID borrow a pair of A's shoes to go and get my take away though, because fucking hell. (It was delicious.)

Anyway, I'm very tired, so I'mma sleep, but I'm a little worried about the state of things when I wake up this time... :/

1. I had too much caffeine yesterday (though all earlier in the day) and really struggled to get to sleep last night, so I was feeling super wiped out today and very glad I didn't have work (I'm trying not to get into the cycle of having more caffeine to try and perk myself up, leading to not sleeping well again, etc etc). After I got back from the dentist I ended up taking a little nap with both Ollie and Jasper in bed with me, which was super sweet.

2. Everything went fine at the dentist, though she was about twenty minutes late to see me. At least I had my phone so I could read while I waited. I've got a temp filling and an appointment to come back in two weeks to get the partial crown put on.

3. It looks like the heat wave this week is not going to be quite as hot as first predicted. Last week when I checked, it was saying that even here in Santa Monica there would be a couple days in the mid 80s, but now it's saying the high will be 82 on Thursday. Unfortunately after that it looks like the rest of the ten day forecast is just all 78/79/80 days, which I am not looking forward to.

4. I went to a fancy cookie shop this afternoon and got a couple fancy cookies. I haven't eaten them yet, but I'm hoping they're good! One is caramel, chocolate, and pretzels, which seems like it can't be bad!

5. Chloe!
